This a basic video of all gear I took with me on the Overland Track (Tasmania, Australia) in March 2022.
Please excuse the rubbish production values - this was filmed entirely on my phone with no real edits.
This is not a definitive guide! I have spent a good five years getting my gear together, and a lot of what you can see here has been bought on sale or clearance, as a factory second, or second hand - and overall accumulated slowly.
I myself am always learning by watching what others are doing and how they manage themselves in the outdoors, and I remain grateful to those who share their knowledge and experience either here on KZfaq or in bushwalking club leadership roles.

Thanks for sharing! Doing the Overland in March ‘23. Have the same pack and similar gear - I agree with applying some of the thru hiker tips. I did the Overland 15 years ago so I look forward to seeing how it feels with a completely different hiking approach now.

Excellent video - thanks very much Kirsten. Would you recommend wearing a dress for the Overland track? Were you happy with the Macpac one? I found it very useful to see how you packed your bag - great tips thanks!

Hi Georgie. I have a couple of those Macpac dresses and I pretty much live in them during the summer. I personally run hot when walking so a dress or skirt works well for me in daytime temps of 14C⁰ and above. I'm sure I flashed my knickers a bunch of times scrambling up Cradle Mountain though! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ My friend Twig was the first to point me along the road of hiking in a dress. She wrote a comprehensive review of the dress she wore on the Appalachian Trail last year if you want to weigh some more pros and cons... www.trailspace.com/gear/purple-rain/adventure-dress/

Thanks Kirsten - very informative! Did the 13 kg packweight include food? I'm guessing not - how much did that add?

Hello Fran. 13kg total pack weight on Day 1 included food and 1.7L of water. I think the weight of my food was around 4kg, maybe a little less. There is a link in the description to my packing list which gives the weight of everything you see here, to give an idea. I'm only teeny tiny, so carrying more than about 13kg wouldn't be recommended for me. Thanks for dropping by and watching!

Have to leave the sprung mattress at home next time Fran :) I think we took a few too many luxuries on our previous two trips - Don't know what they were though...perhaps that 4 liters of water didn't help :)

Hiya. Some good tips. I'm doing the OT in Feb 2023 and I'm curious about your pack. Did you find it comfy or did it dig into your shoulders? I'm thinking of getting the Osprey Aether 65 but it's quite heavy in comparison to the Atom.

Hi Paul! Congrats on getting a spot for next season - February is a great time to do the track. I don't have any issues with the pack shoulder straps digging in, or with chafing. Having load lifters really makes a big difference. You don't have to choose your pack based on the weight of it - something that fits your body well and that can accommodate all your gear should always be forefront. And Osprey packs are popular for a reason! Enjoy your planning :)
