Thinking about getting into model railroading? Maybe start with a Lionel or MTH Ready-2-Run Set?
MrMuffin of MrMuffin'sTrains prepared this 11 minute video to introduce you to the track systems and control systems available for O Gauge Model Trains
The Muffins own MrMuffin'sTrains - a large O Gauge model train layout and collection, open to the public on Saturdays, when they run the trains. There's no charge for visiting.
The Muffins also sell trains, online at MrMuffinstrains.com and at their store just down the street from the layout.
Both buildings are located in Atlanta, Indiana - just a few miles east-north-east of Indianapolis.
Thank you for watching - I hope you found this to be informative.

In the early seventies my brother and I would set up his O gauge train set. We would set it up in my parents bedroom during the holidays and they were very tolerant to have to tiptoe around it. The sights, sounds and smells of those trains is still with me. As far as childhood memories, I didn't see how any video game could compare.

I have owned O gauge Lionels since the early 60’s. Bought the trains I have now in the 80’s. Haven’t put them up in years, I had no idea about any of the new technology. I have a lot to learn now.

Most of info other than tubular track in this video is not about post war trains. Post war are conventional transformer control. This video is modern stuff that use computers and hand held remotes, total different O gage system. Other’s cover conventional Lionel trains that are as your vintage train set.

Great video...Unfortunately if there was only O gauge I couldn't model because it'd really limit me because of the room I have . I love HO for that reason . N is too small to work on for me with some physical issues I have ..So , I have a disused bedroom with a fairly substantial layout in DCC and Sound via Athearn , Intermountain , BLI and Bachmann and analog stuff mostly Bachmann via HO and something I can work on . O Gauge though is fantastic...This vid was fun to watch..
@Tomeleck
@Tomeleck 4 жыл бұрын
Interesting comment. The size of many home layouts is dictated by the available curve track radii/diameters commercially available. Lionel makes 027 track which has a 27 inch radius that many of their smaller O Gauge trains can negotiate successfully. Many of their larger regular O Gauge trains run on their 31 inch diameter O Gauge track. The equivalent standard available HO train curved tracks are pretty close to this with 16", 22" & 26" standard radii track available.

@@Tomeleck G'day Thomas...Thanks for the reply ...Something I also forgot to mention ..O gauge is pretty hard to come by here in Australia at an affordable price to do reasonably well too . If I was in the U.S. it'd be a lot more accessible i think . I do have a close friend in Baltimore though who enjoys Lionel O very much . My HO layout is about 16 x 5 with a little more scope for expansion at some stage . Running several DCC trains and the odd analog one on a combination of set track 22 and 26 " and flextrack is a lot of fun.. that said O Gauge looks amazing .

All of the train equipment, including the engines, are at least 70 years old. Any suggestions on getting started? Even the transformer/power house is old.
@MrMuffinsTrains
@MrMuffinsTrains 3 жыл бұрын
I would first see if the transformer works. You could get an inexpensive voltage tester. If it puts out power, I would put some track down, hook it up, and try an engine. The stuff lasts forever. The engine might need cleaning and lubrication - there are books about that - try trains.com. Most people upgrade the track first, though it can be cleaned with a scotch-brite pad - not steelwool! Check out the OGR Forum - the #1 place to talk O gauge trains in the hobby!

Here is what I am looking for, please point me in the correct direction. Looking for: *To spend $1000 or less (little leeway, I want the best I can afford) * O Scale *Something with low maintenance (I am not a tinkerer) *A tried and true work horse that won’t break down with reasonable use. *Metal wheels on cars, no plastic stuff. Looking for something to last. *Starter kit but if a company don’t offer what I am looking for in a set, please give me a company for what I would need. *Durable low maintenance track (plan to have 4x8 set up) **Knowing what you know about trains, what set would you buy for your grandchildren?

Will Ross Switches work with Atlas track? I've heard Ross switches are the most reliable
@MrMuffinsTrains
@MrMuffinsTrains Жыл бұрын
Yes, they do - Atlas makes an adaptor pin..... Ross switches allow a 3.5" center rail to center rail spacing - so you can get more tracks in the same space in your yards. I use Atlas O switches for the main line - like switching between tracks - then Ross switches in the yards.
@daivdwalker2374
@daivdwalker2374 Жыл бұрын
@MrMuffin's Trains do you think Ross Switches are better? I know Eric's Trains had trouble with atlas switches and switched out with 1 he did video on and put a Ross Switch in he said they're good and the track in the Switch itself was better placed if I'm correct in what he said
@MrMuffinsTrains
@MrMuffinsTrains Жыл бұрын
@@daivdwalker2374 Atlas re-engineered their switches several years ago to improve the electrical conductivity through the switch. On my layout, I drop a power lead on all three center rail points of the switch and tie them together underneath to improve connectivity. Ross switches are certainly beautiful and function well. That's why I recommend them for high traffic areas like yards.

Only "four" gauges of model trains? Really? Really? Several of my associatges and myself we model in "Finescale S," the BEST scale, the "craftsman's scale," and the best ratio, or 1:64. You didn't even mention this? Apologies, if they may be forthcoming, MIGHT be accepted. I don't even consider Lionel "O: scale trains to be a "gauge." That is just 'toy triains,' like American Flyer. How can you seriously consider Lionel 3-rail track to be any scale model at all? I don't see any prototype train running on track that has three rails, using 15" high rail, or about 325 pound rail in a five foot gauge!. Come on, folks, track is a model too. Let's get the track accurate, and cease from defining where a gauge is an actual "gauge" according to the results of some popularity contest!. You will hardly find better modelers than those who seriously pursue "Finescale S." Now Proto-48 -- there is something that deserves mention and recognition. But Lionel? when all you have to do is get out your checkbook, and reminisce from when you were five years old at Christmas time? That's nostalgia, not serious model railroading.
