I got a shit 4 door 510 back in the 90s when I was in auto trade school. Lots of steering play. Finally took a good look and the FRAME was cracked right under where the steering gear bolted up. Everything you'd expect from a $500 car. 2 inch thin doors make for an exciting experience on the freeway, not something I would recommend without a cage. I still loved it, tho. Only tool I had was a flathead in the glove box; if I didn't like the way it was running I'd just get out and tune the carb. So simple...

Thank you ,Larry, you keep bring Rob out and I'm starting to understand his obsession, with things like factor clutch fans on a Z. Make in the 1980's and 90's .I swapped very Datsun steering wheel for a smaller thicker one. Now I have 240 steering wheel on my 240 and my back dated 280. I insisted on having the original wheel. For no other reason than ,every body changed them, but the factory 240Z steering wheel, is a true , work of ART ! It's the perfect size and the perfect diameter. But you have to live alot, drive alot, and then you get to understand the beauty, the ART of the Original Z Concept. Thanks Larry, Thanks Rob This was fun !

In the mid 80's in Puerto Rico🇵🇷 we started to save them, and looked at it now, you guys are enjoying them. It was worth the sacrifice and vision of the future with the 70's and 80's Japanese cars. This where the dreams of the poor man who work to achieve and be proud of the hard work whom people admire his craftsmanship. JOB WELL DONE AND ENJOY!

One highlight of my life is working for Rob and driving/repairing all the amazing cars that go through ZCG. Rob is a living legend!

Back in high school, about '88 I guess, a 510 came up for sale for $800. It was track ready with a massive wide body kit and fully built engine and suspension. But it had the hood fly up and smash the windshield at 120mph on the Pasadena freeway. I had the money to buy it but none to fix it up. Boy I wish I'd just bought it now.

My grandpa had a PMC 510 Skyline, he dragged it into the woods and parked it behind a big bolder 40 years ago, we dragged it out this year and sold it to a PMC/Datsun enthusiast.

LOVE this episode! I've been obsessed with 510s since the 80s, and have an SR in my current open class auto-X 510. It started racing with a fat lazy GT3071R that went ape shit crazy after 4,500rpm. Even with Xanax and ear plugs it was terrifying to drive. It has a GT-X2867R now, so +boost at 2,250 rpm, flat predictable peddle response all the way to 380whp at 20psi. Put's it down on 205 15s cleanly tucked under stock rear fenders, and 195s up front. With JBCW's rack & pinion kit, it's a Mini Godzila that's terrifyingly fun to drive.

When I was 5 years old my dad had a White 510 2 Door with the original 4 cyl motor but he had my mechanic uncle break the botor all the way down. A machine shop ground and balanced the crank, shaved and shaped the rods, domed pistons, port and polished the heads, it had roller rockers befor that was really a thing that my uncle had gotten and adapted from his Chevy Racing Division connection in NASCAR. It had custom cromo tubular headers and exhaust with a Thrusher cherry bomb muffler exiting just in front of the driver rear tire through a 2x8 chrome tip, dial 2 port Webber carburetors with cleanable foam/wire mesh air cleaners with custom ducting to the grill for the coldest clean air possible. The seats were Momo buckets with black leather on the sides and the center seat and back were black and white hounds tooth pattern. It had buckets front and rear with custom frames to drop the rear enough to clear the window and the head restraints removed. Momo racing stearimg wheel. Autometer guages for speed, RPM, oil pressure, water temp., It had a 4 speed manual with a custom Mahogany center console with a custom 8 track player, equalizer mount. 2 drink holders, ashtray, hideaway storage with elbo pad that matched the hounds tooth seats, 5 point harnesses front and a custom booster and 5 point harness for me. Door panels, roof liner, carpet, dash pad and rear deck were black. It had a custom sun roof that popped up in the rear as well as retract to the back.

My best friend in high school had a 510. This was back in 1974 and he had mag wheels and a good after market stereo. Had some crazy times in it. We took it to the first Cal Jam concert and got lost leaving. He accidentally ran a couple bikers off the freeway and we had a high speed chase trying to get away from them until the traffic came to a standstill. They parked one bike in front of us and one behind us and then one of them started pounding on the drivers window until he rolled it down enough for the guy to get a few good punches in, then they took off. Memories of high school.....lol

I wish Rob Fuller was my friend. He comes across as an absolute legend.

Duuuuuude! I laughed at the curse of the 510 hood. Remember going on a trial run with my built NAPZ motor back in the 90's... maiden run on the airport roads in Cameron Park. WHAM the hood slammed up into the windshield... Miss that 73. Have a 72 with an almost wrapped up SR swap. Remember your car from way back in the day.

I saw you guys take your first drive in your freasg SR20 Z. Now I'm hooked on this stuff. I've had 3 Zs and never finished one. 1 stock motor, 1 set up for solo 2, and the last a Chevy SB hybrid. All were fun. I'm loving this 510. As a kid there were 3 in my area painted like factory racers. Watching those guys at autocross and rainy day stunts was so much fun. I never realized how special those days were. Also had a 521 pick up. That thing was great. Seeing the cars in tge background has me wanting to come back and see more.

This is the definition of built not bought, as you grow in age the car grows in power and looks so you create bond with the car, as you can see putting it in someone else's hands it will be too much. The owner could of buy a car equipped with same power but won't enjoy the bond... really love this car and the relationship he has with it 😊😊

For me it will always be the 620, from the days of cruising Lancaster boulevard with my cousin in his king cab in the 80's to taking my oldest daughter for the first ride in dad's minitruck. It is Datsun to me, and always the best.

This is one of the first cars of his that I focused on when I was there having my Z worked on. I didn't realize it at first that it was his car, until he told me about it. I just love looking at all the cool cars he has there whenever I go there; I try not to be too much of a pest because I know they have a lot of work to do but it's like being a kid in a candy shop. Long live the Z.

The 510s are getting rarer when I bought my 1968 five years ago there were a few now I see none for sale. My SR20DET was the best thing I did.

This reminds me of my Corolla TE72 with a 4TGTE back in 1986. Clean, nice and fast, ac and all creature comforts. 4 way disc brakes with LSD. HKS suspension and Tokici Illumina 5 way shocks. 14" Panasport. Pirelli P7F Weight, 2200 lbs.

GREAT CAR GREAT STUFF !!!!! I always wanted one of these. I have owned a 260 and 280 Z's I feel regret every time I think of them. 280 with neat mural on the hood killed by drunk driver. The 260 sold out of need but bought to fill the void of the 280. Still LONG LIVE DATSON!

Rob built my z32 and it's the exact same way... it pretty much never makes traction ever till its heat soaked and calmed down. Larry you always interview my favorites, whether it's at KOH or in SJ with Z Master Rob Fuller.

I used to have a 1972 Datsun 510. It was so fun to drive. I bought it for $100. The guy thought the transmission was blown. It was a simple clutch adjustment.

Love Love Love the car! A buddy had a 510 in the mid 90s while at Uni, that's the first time I fell in love with these. And I can honestly say I would trade my 370 for a mint 510. It certainly would be a tough choice between a 510 and 240.
