Being a Civil War reenactor, I appreciate the historic and educational aspect of relics. One, in particular, that I never considered, was the bayonet that was rounded to help drag the dead into the graves. Some think it may be a little morbid, but I really love the fact that it was included. It's as aspect of the war that wasn't glamourized like some parts of the battle. But a very real part of war. Thank you for going as in-depth as you do! Wonderful channel!

Absolutely! I have strangely pondered how they moved the bodies almost every time I hear how many died on that battlefield and how long it took to bury all the dead.

That's one of the things we usually don't think of, the clean-up after the battle. An officer in Custer's Michigan Cavalry Brigade wrote years after the war that for him the worst part of a battle was after it was over, looking at all the carnage. He said even the horses were spooked by what they saw. A great quote from the Duke of Welington: "Next to a battle lost the saddest sight is a battle won."

Lincoln's wallet .....wow that is amazing. To have something so tangible that he carried and used daily is absolutely amazing. Thus Gettysburg series is just awesome its always been my favorite time period as a kid and as an adult I'm still completely fascinated by it. Thank you JD love your channel brother

Wow, this just blows me away. So many artifacts from the battle and it's aftermath in one amazing museum. The bayonet that was converted to a body hook, reminds us that war is a grisly business, and the dead needed to be buried.

Erik is definitely living a life surrounded by history. Some would say "geeky" I'm in awe at his dedication to this as you are. I need another trip down there to enjoy some more of what Gettysburg has to show me. Even the misses who's not been a fan of history has come to the other side and really finds these artifacts intriguing. Thank you again JD for another outstanding episode!!!

I have long been fascinated by the Civil War and especially Gettysburg. I once went to Gettysburg with my high school class for a history assignment. After the tour we had some free time and I wandered by myself out into a field and just stood there. All sounds (cars, birds, etc.) disappeared. I then heard gunfire, cannons going off, screams of wounded men and smelled gun smoke. This lasted 5 minutes or so. Then it was gone. I never told any of my classmates or anyone else about it till many years later. I would love to go back and revisit the battlefield and see the museum. Thank you for your amazing videos and thank you for your love of history.

I have an Enfield which was pulled from the battle of Gettysburg. It has the individuals name and I found a picture of him as well. It’s still able to shoot, which my wife and I do occasionally. I love Gettysburg and it’s amazing history

That collection as a whole must be worth a King's ransom. The stories that they could tell if they could only speak would be beyond incredible. Poor Jennie Wade, if it weren't for the battle, probably apart from even maybe a few descendants, no one would even know she ever existed, now she lives on in history. I imagine, that unless you do any metal detecting, which by the way, is absolutely forbidden in the park, over the years that battlefield has been picked as clean as a dry bone by now. I never saw so much as a fragment of anything the times I was there. Not that I would keep it, but zip. Also, not knocking his fantastic collection, I'm willing to bet there are more "Gettysburg battlefield relics" out there than was actually used at the battle. Every Minie ball that was ever made probably was 'found" at Gettysburg. If it's worth money, someone will fake it or have a bogus certificate or something to say it was there when it probably wasn't. Great video series and can't wait for more, and more, and more.

Thanks! The value of this collection is that it has direct ties to the local community and in Erik's case, his family. That gives it more credibility. I do imagine that there are a lot of artifacts floating around out there that have been misattributed though.

I feel so glad for this unassuming gentleman to have found his niche in life. He genuinely seems taken with all that he does there and it is refreshing to witness his work. I hope the annex receives enough money to be built soon so that some of these “treasures” will be displayed and not end up on the next episode of pawn stars.

From a guy who is fascinated by the Civil War this museum is amazing. I'm from Galena, Illinois where General Ulysses S. Grant lived and worked. There were, I believe, 7 Generals that lived in Galena. The town has loads of Civil War history. Grant's home is a tourist attraction for all to tour. There is also the Desoto Hotel where many a speech was given during the war. There is so much more to see and explore. Great videos!!! I just discovered your channel!!

J.D. I must say I am totally speechless and I am so passionate of the american civil war that I am literally tingling and covered in goose bumps. What an amazing series of episodes!!! I will be going to Erica museum for sure. I saw this episode just as I got home from work this morning and I am nightshift in law enforcement and I had to stay up and watch this first. Unbelieveable!!!

I did the 150th anniversary. All I can say is wow. My head was on a swivel constantly. They said over the 3 days, there were more than 4 million visitors. Very interesting place.

@@TheHistoryUnderground alAndrew Jackson ordered enslaved men to use those hooks to bury men after a battle, sadly he also buried wounded enemy soldiers while they were still alive…this in the War of 1812.

I always make it a point to stop at the Gettysburg Museum of History every time I go to Gettysburg! Each time we have went in we see something different! There is SO MUCH there!

Over the past 4 years often traveling to Gettysburg, one of my “have to visit” places is the museum. Erik is a gracious host, happy to tell a story or just leave you be to explore. The collection is beyond amazing. From the American Civil War up to Vietnam , there’s just so much to take in. I have not visited in a while bc of the late unfortunateness. Thanks for scratching that itch! Looking forward to seeing more episodes from the museum! Huzzah!

I have been to Gettysburg three times in my 60 years. Each time is just as fascinating as the first time when I was about 12 years old. These videos from The History Underground spark my interest all over again and I'll have to visit these museums that are featured. Not too far away is the Antietam battlefield, which I have yet to visit.

This is one of the coolest museums I have ever seen on KZfaq. I have got to get to PA and go visit Gettysburg. Having been to Shiloh multiple times, I can’t get enough of this history. It’s wild that such famous artifacts such as Lincoln’s wallet, is inches in front of you. Just surreal. Great work man! I love each and every one of these videos!

This series has been a breath of fresh air on KZfaq for me. I wouldnt consider myself a history "buff", but I've always been fascinated by our country's history. These videos make me feel like Im going back in time and witnessing so much rich history...its incredible to see. My cousin did some deep-diving about our family, and found out some of my relatives fought in the PA Army during the Civil War. Our family goes even further back, to the late 1600s, settling in this country from Devonshire, England. Really fantastic to watch some of this come to life. Subscribed.

This was a most interesting episode! I did not realize the rich and profound connection Erik has to Gettysburg. His is a fascinating story in its own right! I’m very thankful that he is today, the benefactor of such a historical and rich collection! Certainly not to even suggest that he’s not worked commendably to amass it!! My very first visit to Gettysburg was with my son when he was a 17 years old. He’s 41 today. But our lodging while at Gettysburg was at the former Home Sweet Home motel which I’m sure Erik will recall. It thankfully is today gone, and that portion of the battlefield restored to its 1863 appearance. I hope this year to return to Gettysburg (I have been back numerous times but it’s been several years and I miss it). I will make it a point to visit Erik’s museum and if I’m truly blessed, will have the privilege of meeting Erik. Thank you both again for a memorable and educational video!

I visited Gettysburg with my family years ago. I felt a heaviness of pain, anguish and suffering in the air the whole time. Even to the point of sensing death or such. I've talked to many since and they felt the same thing. Almost like the ghosts of the dead were saying "Hey, we are still here"...

As an Southerner I have visited many Civil War battlefields over my 74 years as well as the museums connected with them. Unfortunately I missed going to Gettysburg which has always been on my wish list. Having forebears that served in the Confederacy and a great grandmother who received a Confederate widows pension people don’t realize what army you served in depended on what side of the Mason Dixon line you lived. If it wasn’t for President Lincoln, many widows and children of Confederate solders would have starved.

5 stars for Eric for having this museum. It is kind of bad that the park can not display this history. They have a collection of relics and such that will never be seen by us it is all in a basement of a building that is private and closed to the public. If you come to Gettysburg make sure you go to this museum.

I work at a Habitat for Humanity Restore and we get antiques in the store all the time. I will keep an eye out for those things. Also, the name of Chamberlain's successor was Ellis Spear. I am a member of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War so I'm loving these videos.

I love this Gettysburg series. I wish I had been around to meet my grt grt grandpa and here about running from one area to another reinforcing the line. My grandfather told me some but you know detail is lost in story telling. He did say they lost more in casualties due to exposure and people just not being healthy enough for the task of marching. I don't know how many died or were just furloughed to a support or logistics unit. I find it fascinating being a Marine myself I've been on plenty of forced marches and man they are hard and these guys got there then went right to the frontlines with little to no rest. WOW!

These 2 episodes are by far the best so far! Looking forward to more episodes of this museum and more of Gettysburg. I grew up in Chambersburg and frequented Gettysburg throughout my youth..

Maybe someday I leave this guy what I can do he can continue doing what he does. It's very obvious he is gifted and passionate about the history and humanity doesn't need to loose any of that. He does an awesome job. I'll drive to visit his museum someday, he has done an incredible job.

Now more than ever before must we never forget how strong convictions of polarized views tore apart not only a country, but the families of these soldiers regardless of which side their their allegiances fell. They all suffered unimaginable fear, pain, sadness and regret. It would be no different today.

I believe it was at the Gettysburg museum where they had the table upon which Stonewall Jackson's arm was sawn off. (I know that was near Chancellorsville.) It was very strange seeing the wood stained with Stonewall Jackson's blood.
