An underground gold mine - Realistic Scenery Volume 9

If you’ve ever wondered what a gold mine looks like from the side then this video is for you! And while we’re at it I’ll step you through every stage of how this awesome diorama was built.
The techniques used to build this diorama can be used whether you’re building a huge model railroad or just a tiny little master piece of a model, you can also use these techniques for war gaming scenery however when it comes to sealing the scenery with Woodland Scenics Scenic Cement I’d use it undiluted for extra strength.
The hot wire tools I use in the video are supplied from ‘The Hot Wire Foam Factory’ and I’m giving you my 100% honest opinion that these tools are absolutely fantastic! This diorama idea has been on the cards for over 12 months and it was not until I started to use the hot wire tools that I was able to get the results I was after! I highly recommend these tools!

To me, this was one of his best videos. :-D I didn't have what it takes when I started model making. But then several years later, I started making models for people all over the world! You never know till you try and who knows where it may lead. And it's fun too! :-)

I remember in early secondary school we went on an excursion to Sovereign Hill in Ballarat (gold mining theme park for non Oz readers) and then we had to do a project on it. I compiled a book on Ballarat's mining history (my Mum typed it all!) and we had it professionally bound and with another student, made a miners tent. It was fun doing everything in miniature but this guy Luke is a genius....I find his vid's absolutely fascinating. It's next level stuff! BTW, I got an A for the school project. :))

You should carve a hidden cave with water and crystals inside. Maybe even a skeleton holding a nugget. Add some mystery and lore to this piece and it will make amazing. So cool, keep up the good work.

the more I think about it the more I respect how much work you put into this content- the actual building ofc, but also getting materials, trial and error to make sure things work, and then making the video itself with the editing and voiceover and music. Give it a go, it is really fun. You don't need all the flash tools and gear, they just make it a bit faster. It's probably sensable to start small and simple, then go from there, adding new skills/complexities each new diorama. Have fun.

This reminds me of when I was a kid and lived in a coal town, the local library had a diorama of a coal mine except the tunnels were carved into a large chunk of coal.

I wish i had enough money and space to get into diorama hobby work. I've always been fascinated by dioramas and train kits since i was a child, but have always been very poor. Maybe someday I will be able to do this.

Yeah, my suggestion is to start small with household materials, you’ll gradually work your way up and it’s pretty rewarding when you finish a cool diorama using unusual materials. Even the new thunderbirds tv show had dioramas made using parts from an old vacuum cleaner!

I use real soil , tree bark, dried leaves etc, all from my local park. Once processed (chopped up, blended etc,) they make great scenic material. Old polystyrene packaging is great for making the baseboards and rocks. Get a cheap bottle of PVA glue, bag of plaster of paris, couple of blades and you are off and running! You can probably find most of what you need in your kitchen or shed. There is no need to spend loads of money. If you think out of the box you can make diorama's for nothing pretty much.

Astounding! This is the most brilliant diorama I've ever seen! This could be a museum piece. I kept thinking what would be cool, is to have a backlit vein of amber acrylic running through the piece, just out of reach of one of the existing shafts.

As a former Geological technician and Surveyor with both Government and Private Industry, I spent a good part of my working life exploring and surveying both abandoned Historic and current working mines in South Australia, and absolutely love and appreciate this diorama ! While having a few critiques rather than criticisms (electrics were usually run in exposed conduits between junction boxes) I would love to see such a diorama of an historic 19th Century mine with less uniformity of the height of drives, a few stopes, flickering candle-light (micro-LEDs) and a working cage, with perhaps a few more buildings (drying room, sorting shed and perhaps working stamp mill and engine room) Much inspiration can be found in the book "Mining in South Australia : a pictorial history " compiled by J.F. Drexel. I am a crippled OAP and I wish I could afford to be a patron, but I have subscribed and watched nearly all your videos! Thanks!

Tip for easier lighting electrics: Instead of using a resistor for every single led, you can use one resistor for the entire lighting setup (given you only use the same type of LED and wire all of them up in parallel, one LED per branch) this will save you a lot of time during souldering. Edit: I just did the maths and it might seem counterintuitive, but the replacement resistor actually needs to be smaller than the 6200 ohm resistors. R0 = Ri / i [ R0 : Replacement resistor i : amount of Leds (parallel branches) Ri : individual resistors (6200 ohms in your case) ] Hope I didn't cause any confusion

I stopped watching them because he had passed away and I would get upset seeing his models and dioramas around the house. This is really cool. It's great to see how the freedom of KZfaq is showing us how fascinating these interests truly are. i always think your tips are brilliant, but the steel wool in vinegar to color the matchsticks was something that clearly comes with lots of experience. as a novice who only works with miniature kits (for now), that sort of thinking just blows my mind!

I just read through a number of the comments, and one stuck me; Chester Copperpot. From the 1980's movie 'The Goonies'. Now that would be a fun diorama to make. More of a linear tunnel than a mine, but a lot of detail, with a restaurant above, water slides, and a pirate ship. Could be fun ;)

What I'd really like to see is a railroad layout focusing more on railroads (laying tracks, track maintenance, repairing trains, building rail infrastructure, track signals, sorting yards, etc) than the scenery and peripherals.

This is absolutely spectacular, and has given me ALL the tips and techniques I needed to make something like this myself, only in 25 mm scale, for a Dwarf v Goblin underground wargame "table" that can be mounted on/pushed up against a wall, making a vertical gaming table :-) Thank you so much for such a wonderful video tutorial. Man I’ve watched so many of your videos last few days and weeks... this is my favorite, I love digging for gold and this would look awesome hanging on my wall. Only thing different I’m gonna do is I will make each level of the mine slightly different colors, to simulate different types of geological overburden, and the bottom level will look like bedrock. I love this diorama, thanks for sharing.

Amazing! What a cool project and awesome video as always : ) The only thing I would change is colour of the rock on the outside compared to the inside if the tunnels. The differences is too big, but you can simply fix this when adding the different sediment layers. Remember to match the layers with the tunnels. For example the lighter layers could be where the tunnels are. I grew up in an area with lots of coal mines (most of them closed already), so I have seen countless dioramas of mines in museums. Another possible featur would be a place where the excess rocks are dumped, those little hills are often close to the mines.

Thanks for the tips Jutta, I totally agree with you about the color difference which is why I'm plan to add sediment layers in the future. It must have been pretty interesting growing up around coal mines. One of my favorite movies is centered around coal mining, it's called 'October Sky'. Such a great movie (About Rockets and Space). You should read the book by Homer Hickam and its two sequels. They are really amazing reads. You did an incredible job here. I want to shrink down and explore the mine! If you really want to get crazy, make the elevator move up and down! It'll help me once I'm shrunk! ;-)

Luke just a thought here but one of my favorite movies is “Coal Miners Daughter”. It was filmed in Kentucky not too far from where I grew up in Virginia. Some of the scenes are actually from the town I grew up in. A guy that drove the school bus I took to go to school has a small part in it which is hilarious. Granted it’s not directly geared towards coal mining. It was filmed during the time when coal was booming and running full force. It’s about the life of Loretta Lynn during her younger years who is a country music singer. Her father was a coal miner and her boyfriend who later becomes her husband. The small coal town where she was raised gives a glimpse of how truly poor these hard working miners were. I really think you would enjoy it. It has a good story line and is based on her real life. A more simple life during simple times of years past.
