An Unforgettable Ride on the Penta WDG4!!

This is a compilation of videos taken on board a Penta-WDG4 consist as they took a partially empty BOXN rake down the beautiful Braganza Ghats between Castle Rock and Kulem Stations. This will remain my most memorable 'train' ride forever! The braking power of the locomotives with DB as they went down the ghats at a precise maximum speed of 30kph could be clearly felt as we stood on the lead locomotive. The rest of the video is self-explanatory :P

I did this once from Lonavala to Karjat ...because our group ( 17 years olds) had no money to go to Bombay .... we asked the driver and he said get into the last engine ( there were three coupled together ) ... there was no control that we could mess around wiht... I still remember that trip 20 years on .... one of my most memorable journeys ...

@bharath94ir Thanks :D The Amaravathi express was running very late that day and we were getting roasted in the hot sun so when this consist came to a halt at Dudhsagar one of us asked the ALP if we could get a ride till Kulem, and he said yes :D Pure luck :D

@ahirwan Thank you. None of the locos do any smoking. It's a downgrade so all they have to do is maintain a constant speed of 30kph. Only the first three locos do this braking job. The other two are the locos that came with the train so they just idle until they reach Kulem, where the brakers will be detached. The locos are fitted with AEB(Auto Emergency Brake) which maintains the speed at exactly 30kph and so there is no need for the loco pilots to constantly work the locos to maintain speed.

@nikosjk1 Thank you. :) Travelling in/on locomotives is not allowed here either, but the loco pilots allow people to board them as a helpful gesture. If there are no passenger trains at a given time, then the only alternative is to walk the 15km from Castle Rock station, or to board a freight train like this. :D Loco pilots who don't allow people on the locos usually let them board the caboose. :)

@SD457500 Thank you! :) Here, all their power was put into braking. On the return journey, they show off their power in a 2 pulling + 3 pushing loco combination. :D

Now that's some amateur yet uniquely enjoyable capture. 5 Emds, bet it was a long ass freighter. What's even more rare is the loco pilot maintaining the rev and gear steady throughout the ride crawling at an expected 20-40 km/h range. Doodhsagar waterfalls, scenic in its own way. 👍

Thanks. All trains here are standard 55-60 wagons in length. The three locos that act as brakers are equipped with Auto Emergency Brakes which ensure that the train maintains a steady 30kph.

No. The first three locos are the brakers, the fourth and fifth are the ones that came with the train. Three locos are always used for both uphill and downhill operations. :)

It depends on the LPs. Most of the time they do, but some are strict. Only the ERS - PUNE Poorna Express passes through this section.

+Roshan Srihari You just request the LPs - if they want to, they'll let you on the loco. Depends on their mood. It is not legal, but is done just to help people.

+Dheeraj Rao They don't allow now, railways have received lot of complaints related to people riding on the engine and the drivers are not allowing engine ride anymore.

It's not Konkan railway man its South western railways Konkan don't have such steeps to get penta locos.. check the description before watching videos..
