Tbilisi, the capital city of Georgia, has a rich and diverse history that intertwines different cultures, empires, and religions. Nestled at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, Tbilisi has been a melting pot of various civilizations for centuries. Here’s an exploration of some lesser-known aspects of Tbilisi’s intriguing past:
Ancient Origins
Founding Legend: According to legend, Tbilisi was founded in the 5th century by King Vakhtang I of Iberia. The story goes that the king's falcon caught a pheasant while hunting in the dense forests. The bird fell into a hot spring and was cooked. Impressed by the natural hot springs, the king decided to build a city on the site, naming it Tbilisi, derived from the Georgian word "tbili," meaning warm.
Medieval Hub
Silk Road: Tbilisi was a significant stop on the Silk Road, facilitating trade and cultural exchanges between East and West. Merchants from various backgrounds, including Persians, Arabs, and Byzantines, would pass through the city, leaving their mark on its architecture and culture.
Architectural Wonders
Narikala Fortress: Overlooking the city, Narikala Fortress has stood as a sentinel since the 4th century. It has witnessed numerous invasions, including Arab, Mongol, and Persian incursions. The fortress offers stunning panoramic views of the city and the Kura River.
Religious Tapestry
Multiculturalism: Tbilisi is home to a unique blend of religious edifices, including Georgian Orthodox churches, mosques, synagogues, and Armenian churches. This coexistence of various religious communities is a testament to the city's historical tolerance and diversity.
Modern Transformations
Soviet Influence: Under Soviet rule, Tbilisi underwent significant changes. The city saw the construction of many Soviet-style buildings and monuments. Despite the oppressive regime, Tbilisi became a center for Georgian culture and resistance.
Contemporary Renaissance
Post-Soviet Era: Since gaining independence in 1991, Tbilisi has experienced a cultural and economic renaissance. The city blends its ancient heritage with modern developments, making it a vibrant and dynamic capital.
Hidden Gems
Abanotubani: The historic district of Abanotubani is famous for its sulfur baths. These bathhouses, with their distinctive domed roofs, have been a part of Tbilisi’s culture for centuries. They are believed to have healing properties and are a popular attraction for both locals and tourists.
Leghvtakhevi Waterfall: Hidden within the old town is the picturesque Leghvtakhevi Waterfall, a serene spot amidst the bustling city. It's a perfect example of Tbilisi's unique blend of urban and natural beauty.
Festivals and Traditions
Tbilisoba: An annual festival celebrating the city’s history, culture, and traditions. Held in October, Tbilisoba features music, dance, food, and wine, reflecting the city's vibrant spirit.
Tbilisi’s untold stories are woven into the fabric of its streets, buildings, and the hearts of its people. From its ancient origins to its modern-day renaissance, Tbilisi continues to captivate visitors with its unique blend of history, culture, and charm.

Your statement that Georgia only grows potatoes and onions locally had made me smile. Georgia is famous for fertile agricultural land... that can grow just about anything in-between tangerines and watermelons. What about over 500 grape varietals!? 🙂Just go to the local farmers market to witness the abundance of locally grown fruits and vegetables. Some stores indeed do import food from some other countries .. But you don't get a real picture just by visiting large box stores that tend to import some locally unavailable tropical fruit like bananas, pineapples etc.... Recently, they even started growing kiwis and olives locally. All Georgian restaurants mostly use locally grown fresh produce.... Saying that Georgia only grows potatoes and onions like Scandinavian countries is a bit off. Otherwise - a good clip.

Thanks for your input on that. You are absolutely right about Georgia as a whole. But I was talking about Tbilisi specifically.
