Even thought it's been a long time since I've played minecraft, I still think it's one of the greatest games ever made. There's simply no other sandbox game like it. As someone who grew up playing with legos, minecraft was kind of like a huge lego set, but there were no instructions or correct/wrong way to build anything. I have such fond memories of this game and I'm glad people still have an appreciation for it.

Minecraft has had Villagers for many years now, since you're in Creative Mode you can find their spawn eggs in the item menu. You also mentioned at some point in the video that you encountered some enemies in the buildings during the night, you can change that by going to the settings and changing your difficulty to Peaceful.

I know nothing about Minecraft, but the application of real planning principles/circumstances to it does in turn teach me more about urban spaces and their dynamics. Great stuff!

Minecraft does have some NPC villagers in the game, but they're not all that intelligent and are more for trading with in survival games than anything else. The next Minecraft update is actually going to concentrate on villages and villagers, so we will apparently be able to see the villagers have a routine over the course of the day and move between their homes and workplaces. Another option is something called 'armour stands' which are basically mannequins which you can pose and stage around the place to set the scene, but that can be a pretty painstaking process, so I don't know that large scale city builds would use it all that often. ... Whenever I play 'Minecraft' my basic goal is always to build some nice little villages, but I'm not sure that I really know all that much about realistic medieval village design, so I end up puttering around more than anything.

I honestly got into infrastructure and civil engineering when planning out Minecraft city builds. Go figure. Especially roadway widths when it came to bi directional minecraft carts, or that awkward moment, only in minecraft when you need to move an entire building 1’ block’ over to make the setbacks right.

You'd have to add a mod to put people in the cities, even then having that many entities would lag badly. Then you'd have to accommodate logistics of them living there with beds and stuff. Too complex

You should look at a game like GTA 5. Review a fictional city by game developers with no city planning experience. A few GTAs have even been perfectly replicated in Cities Skylines.

I'm not sure if you'd be impressed with a city that I would make in Minecraft, especially when it would be more of a European city that is like this: City planning: -most buildings, except in a few select areas are max. 6 stories/ 150ft high -the newest architectural style allowed, also except in a few areas (mainly ex-warehouse/port/heavy industrial areas) is streamline moderne -most areas, except for the outer regions are mixed-use, or made up of terraced houses or 5-6 story blocks of flats with retail units below the flats or on street corners Getting around -Has a very large metro and S-Bahn system, plus an extremely large suburban mainline rail network) -Has a huge tram and trolleybus network -very little on-street parking (and any that is on street is almost always for residents only, or metred) -Most streets are 1 or 2 lanes wide in each direction, and those that are 3 or more lanes wide have a bus and/or tram lane in the middle or on the side, or trams on grassed track in the middle of the road (the last one especially further away from the city centre) -Trams (and occasionally buses and trolleybuses) stop at some stops in the middle of the road, and other traffic must wait behind them, and at some stops, there are either full traffic lights, or traffic lights with only an amber and red lamp, as well as the road being raised to just below the level of the doors at some on-street stops, the rest have islands -A large number of newer housing estates are directly connected to the tram network, or are accessible to it with a bus ride to an interchange point, such as a shopping centre or suburban high street

don't know how much your knowledge of minecraft has grown since this was up loaded but minecraft has cities with villagers naturally spawn through out the world. but because these are fan/man made villagers don't naturally spawn. that last city is based on the vilages that naturally spawn in minecraft, plains biome. they are ment to be small farming towns, not really cities so that's why there are farms everywhere. minecraft has recently updated their villages and villagers so the buildings and villagers take on appearances based on what biome they're in. minecraft has many natural mobs, like villagers and animals, each having their own conditions needed to spawn.

I haven't played Minecraft in a while, but if you go onto creative city build servers the rules are usually at the spawn. Check out the World of Keralis Server as this was the best one I played on. Some of these places are fairly master planned. Roads and rail are built, large areas are reserved, and some are subdivided by different coloured blocks to dictate zones, and how tall these buildings can be. Other players build on it, and the moderators of the server, act as a sort of a planning compliance team making sure buildings are up to code. As a trained but unemployed planner, I'd say this is a fairly decent representation of the planning process within the limitations of Minecraft, and without all the NIMBY's.

I live in Vancouver and the reason the park transitions straight into high rises is because that forested area is Stanley park and in real life the transition is just as sudden.

Answering your question: Review cities of Cities Skylines is a YES. I really enjoy your videos. You explain a lot of things that I usually ignore even if I am indeed interested in Urban planning myself. Maybe you could further explain the idea of having suburbs (or big wealthy single family housing in the outskirts of the city) as a positive thing for the city. Is it just for it to be more realistic? Or maybe you could explain the social benefits of actually having them in real cities. I understand in the US suburbs was like their bible when cities started to grow due to the car popularization. But in other parts of the world I really think suburbs are more in the innefficient side of living. IDK you tell me. :)

People on the Seattle city council have actually made that remark about preserving the skyline! I thought the same thing, the city isn't about buildings, it's about people, so if we can alleviate housing scarcity, it'll help the people, which is way more important than the skyline!

I think that AI can replace humans in planning new cities. AI learning could also help. But I still think that humans would still be better at changing existing cities

For amyone starting a city heres some advice: a one-way street should be 11 blocks wide, this allows for parked cars with 1 block clearance to traffic. For a two-way street it should be 15 blocks wide, this allows for parked cars with 1 block clearance to traffic on both sides. Hope this help and good building. :) Side note: he right about the streets. I have seen many nice to great citys builds but they all shared the same mistake, narrow streets.

I’ve built up a whole continent with several civilizations and even some ruins in Minecraft, but I cheated a bit with my cities and kept them at the size and scale of those during the Classical, Renaissance, or Medieval period, with roads, farms, outposts, monasteries, wilderness, and villages in between. It’s nowhere near done, and I don’t have a lot of time to work on it. Most of my cities have walls around them, and the tallest buildings tend to be religious structures and palaces, with most of the housing being tightly packed buildings. The scale is meant to be one that works with the mechanics of the game, rather than being 1:1 fully realistic re-creations of actual urban landscapes. I don’t know what to do with my world, it would be nice to share, though not all of the buildings or places were made originally by me, though all of them have been altered by my hand, or with an external editor like WorldPaint or MCEdit.

The idea of "point towers" could be a real great asset in Washington, DC, whose building height restrictions date back to the 1910 law that seeks to avoid shadows over the urban landscape. This could help to increase the residential density and create more moderately priced units if implemented with affordable-unit mandates for developers.

It usually takes about a hour to make small homes more depending on the detail. So I’m guessing it would take a while to break all the blocks then build a new building. They have villagers yet no vehicles

In the auto-generated city, the "aquaponics" are simply small farms in the way that minecraft manages them. Blocks with crops on them have to be within a certain range of water, so you'll see stripes of water and crops.

Minecraft cities are always fun to build, really is interesting to see how they turn out and I even enjoy the redevelopment of areas where I tear down buildings and rebuild roadways. A lot of people think it’s a hassle but I enjoy it and I take screen shots to have before and after pictures like when I changed the streets from cobblestone and brick to concrete and asphalt

You can do more intricate signs in modern minecraft or old. First off, giant pixel art signs with 5 meter tall font. Second, you can use maps as signs. It does require you to make rather enormous map art, but you can make billboards with font sizes basically as small as an inch or as big as multiple meters using map art.

Maybe I wasn't paying attention in August, but that fit downtown Van very well, you for from Ikea to tall buildings on the train pretty quickly.

Ahhh Green field gives me nightmares of the Suzhou Industrial Park in China, just a thought, you could do a video on that or Chinese style urbanisation which would be really interesting

Wait a minute that’s Detroit’s street and highway map on the title slide.

If the map inspiration is primarily based on Vancouver then the start wasn't necessary out of town. The forest we see should be the famous 'Stanley Park'. it is located on the North-West side of downtown. In which, the bridge that we see at the start would be the Lions Gate Bridge. Note the similarity in appearance between the bridge in the map and Lions Gate.

It's really cool seeing the Vancouver inspiration in the first map as someone who lives in vancouver myself! Even right from the beginning, the bridge to forest to lake on right and ocean with docks on left to buildings is straight out of Vancouver! It's Lions Gate bridge to Stanley Park to Lost Lagoon on the left with the ocean and docks on the right to directly into downtown! Also the tower that was under construction is a really good recreation Vancouver's Trump Tower! plus all the other things you said about the point towers, which I never even noticed was a thing until you pointed it out. probably was a bunch of other things I missed too. Also, we got an Ikea, but it ain't downtown though!

Tips for exploring cities in Minecraft: There is a "spectator" mode that one can turn on if cheats are enabled in a map, it is like noclip in other games, you can go through buidings but you cannot interact with anything. The great thing about it is that the scroll wheel of your mouse will allow you to change the speed of your flight. To enable the mode, press T to bring up the chat, type /gamemode spectator into the box and press enter. If you need to interact with anything, like doors or buttons, switch back into creative mode using /gamemode creative You were using creative mode at the beginning since you had the inventory slots on-screen but no health or hunger bar, and you were flying. To fly a bit faster, press control and w then hold w. It gives a little boost compared to the normal fligt speed. Once you release w to stop going forward, the next time you press just w you will go normal speed. In any flight sitution, holding spacebar will raise you above the ground, holding shift will make you descend. In creative mode, pressing spacebar twice in quick succession allows you to get off the ground or "snap out" of flight, basically you fall to the ground. In creative mode, pressing spacebar once while on ground makes you jump. Alternatively, to switch between creative and spectator, if you are in one of these modes, you can press the shortcut F3+N.
