Hey Everyone! This is the first of many episodes of becoming Dr Andy! “Becoming Dr Andy” is a series of weekly vlogs where I’ll be sharing my life as a UCT medical student, academic/clinical activities I do on a daily basis. You will get to see what a UCT clinical student does throughout the clinical blocks whilst getting an insight of what’s expected from us throughout this degree! This series is going to last until the end of my final year and I hope you will enjoy and draw some inspiration from it!

Hi Andy! I love that you're documenting your journey through med school like this ☺️ I graduated from UCT med school in 2016 and right now I'm a registrar in Nuclear Medicine at GSH (who is supposed to be studying for exams but is instead procrastinating, so we never really change, we just grow older 😂). Trust me, time FLIES by but this is such a wonderful way of providing a glimpse into what med school is like for those who are interested. Keep up the great work and if you're ever looking for advice about what happens after med school (or what nuclear medicine is all about), let me know 😁. All the best!

Hi would like to know more about which other procedures is expected from medical student that one needs to know besides intubation. Extubation. Induction. Monitor of patients on monitor i Mixing of iv drugs .

On a 4th year level, that’s why you basically need to know…I also believe anaesthesia is more or less what you mentioned so I don’t think there is much outside that that you can possibly know as a student.

Not really, I shoot when I have time or when I’m doing practical stuff at the hospital so that I can have time to stuff afterwards.

I just wanted to ask if UCT will accept me if I have a 90%+(for Maths,Physcial science,Life science and Afrikaans), got 80% for both NBTs and got an 80 average on my NSC

Are you required to perform any surgeries as a medical student?

Not in 4th year, you can probably assist in surgeries from 5th under supervision
