The Elektron Analog Heat has been called an overpriced distortion box, but I really think it's so much more than that. There are a ton of tools for sound design tucked away under the hood, and today we're going to dive in and see what we can do with them.

The Heat is a staple in my setup. It’s pretty much permanently hooked up to the Cue out on my Octatrack for when I want a crunchier, analog type filter that I absolutely love. Between that and my Microcosm I have everything I need to colour my tracks!

Nice setup! I’m about to pick up an OT mk1 and an AH mk1. By hooking the Heat up to the cue out of the OT, I guess you only cue the tracks you want roasted, and keep the rest out the main outs? Then combine the two in a mixer? I suppose there’s loads of ways to connect it up.

I’ve had the Heat since launch and I’ve never felt I’m getting out of it what I should. It’s the one elektron box where having the visuals of Overbridge really make things easier and make more sense, but I don’t use Overbridge! The most use I’ve had out of it has been crunching the bejesus out of drums and using the generated harmonics to inform basslines.

With all the negativity surrounding the Heat MKII, I never really gave it any attention. I think this is a must-have. You're absolutely right; if you approach it like a distortion pedal, you're missing the main appeal. It reminds me of the Sherman Filterbank in terms of modulation.

Thank you. I really enjoyed your piece at the end. May I ask why the central lead ‘ melody remained untouched throughout that external storm? Nothing seemed to impact it until the very end. Thanks man! I threw this one together really fast, so I didn’t really have time to think about it in an abstract way 😅 Musically speaking though, I really liked the contrast of having the piano be really clean to stand apart from the distorted parts surrounding it. i listened to a lot more long form interviews with actual succesfully working musicians and it quickly gives a bit of a different perspective, like alot of them are removed from the gear hype. james blake said he uses geist since 10 yrs for his drums and is only forced to move off bc they didnt update it in 7(?) yrs and finneas at one point wondered if a sound was made by like a m-audio venom or i think some super expensive prophet which i found hilarious.

It’s true that a lot of the perceived differences in “the sound” are placebo. A good producer can make less expensive gear sound amazing. I thought this thing was just an expensive compressor LOL. But saturation and drive is the same as compression since the whole point is murdering the dynamic range. Everybody thinks a flat-topped waveform means they’re good at mastering/engineering. I just can’t get on the “You need to increase your track’s perceived loudness” bandwagon. That’s like telling people an HDR video needs to have 1000 nits average brightness or it sucks. I mean, come on. Every popular synth channel is some guy who can’t make anything without three Elektron boxes and a KeyStep Pro and a BigSky. It’s all commodity jams with zero personality.
