Analog Mixing With Ableton and Zahl's AM1 Console

Have you heard of Zahl's AM1 Console yet? From the brainchild collaboration of Micheal Zahl and dub techno legend Mark Ernestus, came the invention of the AM1. A full analog mixer that also has CV input and internal modulation. Now, what it does look like when used with Ableton? How does one do analog summing using that console?
In this video, I'm giving my impression on the Zahl's AM1 console as well as explaining how I designed my own and also will explain how I use it with my mixing for my clients.

I've been doing the same thing with an old Midas Venice 240. Basically routing each track into different "output groups" in Ableton, which are sent to the Midas and the master out back into Ableton.

so do the “output groups” in abletons output config settings then go through your audio interface that is also connected to your mixer via your audio interface’s own console settings? Like for example I am working with ableton and an Apollo Twin. So would the routing be something like Ableton output -> Apollo Interface -> Mixer -> Ableton ?

Im doing it with the venice 240 like this ableton-> interface-> Mixer-> direct out-> interface-> ableton. I am routing it with the external audio effect

Because of covid I can’t be settled in my studio for various reasons. I had to quarantine twice and it made it impossible to get there. So I improvised a studio at home in my loft. It’s not ideal but I work with headphones mostly. I will soon get back to studio soon because I can’t wait to hear it loud.

I'm so jealous you have a LIVID DS1 in the back there. Mine got stolen a few years ago and now they're impossible to find. The best knobs and faders controller out there !!!

I just wish it had direct outs (post fader or switchable), so I could track through it as well (especially since it looks like it was designed to be a great performance mixer, e.g. with those amazing CV channels). I'd love to track synths/drum machines through it dub style, and then send it back out to the desk for mixing and summing. Perhaps when I get rich, I'll try to convince Michael to do a custom board for me :)

You can do tracking with the AM1!

@@Pheekofc But no direct outs, right? I haven't seen any info about it having direct outs. I'm too much of a tweaker to sum the signal during tracking, I need more control than that once it gets in the box! Coming back out of the box during mixing, it's awesome to have such a robust and gorgeous summing mix bus, but during tracking, I'd need to get the stems in ungrouped.

Hello, how can i use my mixer? I got an Mackie Onyx24 but i dont know how i install it so i can play my live set, can u help me maybe? i also got an extra audio interface if its needed. :)

Unrelated question but which model of Genelec are those? Decent for quarantine home studio or are you almost exclusively using headphones?

8340. I mostly use headphones but counter check on the Genelecs and Sonos/iPhone.

I have a few questions...To get decent headphone sound do you use a headphone amp? Also, and sort of stupid question, but are you using a ipad pro as an external monitor for your Mac? That Zahl desk looks phenomenal and I suspect its the beginning of a trend.

I never used an amp for headphones so it’s not necessarily but it can be a good investment. I don’t use the iPad to monitor no. You mean to see if the mix is ok?

@@Pheekofc Nope, I meant your 2nd display you are using in the video for arrangement. I was asking about the headphones because I just picked up some Shure 1840 and I think they need some actual juice to operate.

Lol I know right? Because of covid I had to quarantine twice. So I’m mixing from home but rely mostly on headphones. As a dad engineer I had to get very familiar with headphones mixing. It allows me to be mobile! Can’t wait to get back to studio, trust me!!!! :))
