The Tesla BM556 analog oscilloscope from 1982 is finally fully working! More high ESR and open circuit electrolytic capacitors, a bad LED and a problematic paper capacitor in an interference suppression filter module.

Wow, you are building up an army of test equipment by resurrecting dead or faulty units. The pluses - stopping items going to landfill and gaining equipment at almost no cost. The power of knowledge. 🐱

Exactly! Any vintage unit saved is vital to preserving history of engineering. Especially if it's actually used rather than just a still exhibit. I don't know how things are like in Czech Republic, but here in Poland we've got e-waste regulations that hamper saving the old tech from scrapping. It's harder to get stuff from universities, schools, institutions or defunct factories than it was 20 years ago. Oversight over e-waste processing facilities is tighter than it used to be, and while it may be good for streamlining the regular e-waste processing, it makes the real vintage tech harder to recover. It's treated as junk rather than increasingly rare treasure, creating scarcity and leading to prices skyrocketing as demand rises, fueled by the growing online collectors community and media. Used electronics marked has turned to crap over time as speculators drove the prices up. As a vintage electronics collector and afficionado who is on a very limited budget, I've got it harder than two decades ago.

I am actually working on two broken oscilloscopes myself here, one tube based and one transistor, I Think I am able to fix them too. and your video inspires me to push on

thank you for your nice videos. i learned a lot from you. pls be careful. the liquid leaking from the old Tesla filter (and other old paper capacitors) contains Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs).

Hey, that's a cool filter identification device :). Nice restoration job. Other than those sewper dodgyyyyyyyyy capacitors, I love how this scope is built. I had this moment of astonishment when working on our local hackerspace's Unitra Unima OS-352 scope made in the '80s, it was also very clean and neat inside.

To get his hands on these rare stuff is wild. I used to collect old nokia phone. i mean yeah old things is outdated, but in build quality, they are Superior than nowdays stuff. Way better and easy to fix. Nowdays stuff is like one time use, broken = E-waste.

Each series has its own characteristic ESR, the higher the ripple current, the lower the ESR. High quality, high price.

Believe it or not, but the filter was actually installed the right way around! You're still right to suspect they'd install it any whichever way the wind turned it that day, though. And indeed, since many of these have capacitors on both sides, it matters very little. The capacitors from L/N to PE should be on the "output" side, as that is where the interference can be generated. If the capacitors between L/N and PE were on the input side, interference from the device would have to flow through the inductor which will not behave the same for all frequencies. Having the capacitors between L/N and PE on the output side provides the easiest path to ground for those types of interference. Furthermore, since this is a common mode interference filter (choke), interference on one terminal only (either L or N) wouldn't be treated the same! The filter will arguably behave better or more as expected the way it's fitted with the capacitors between L/N and PE on the output side, as it doesn't impact power factor as much due to not being directly connected to the mains. Net result for the oscilloscope, though, is the same. For the oscilloscope, it doesn't matter.
