In this video, I explain my history of recording and how I found different analog and digital formats compare, throughout the 80s and 90s, and to now. Plus I audition a 1/4 inch reel to reel vs. direct digital comparison (shootout) using my own music recording (band track) and drum stems.

I still have my AMPEX MM1200 2 inch tape width 16 track machine but would not dream of using it again, the cost of tape, constant lining up the electronics, power supply capacitors blowing and sheer size of it compared to my HD 24 ALESIS is a no brainer for me. And yet I must admit the sheer sonic sound that came out of the Ampex was amazing. I still record using an analogue console and have found that having top of the range mic pre,s and reducing the signal path makes a huge difference.I have mixed from digital to cassette tape which can warm things a bit but you can create the a similar phat replay sound from digital once you reference it against the old analogue recordings from back in the day.Enjoyed your video thanks.

I think we're lucky (mine is an amateur, home studio experience) to have seen the last 30-35 years of recording technology evolution..I also am re-discovering my old analog tape works and I've just bought an old Fostex B16 reel-to-reel for my personal "analog tape revival": the goal is to develop a right method of mixing analog & digital (24 bits!) recording (f.e. many instruments like drums, wind instruments flute and trumpet, and also some voices sound better if recorded on analog tape, while basses, acoustic gtrs and sinths love digital)...thank for the interesting video and cheers from Italy🙂

The mix sounds phenomenal. Gives me Fleetwood Mac vibes. The tape monitor gives much more separation and the instrumentas sound great. Are you running the master buss out your converters to the reel and back to the converters? Or is it going thru the console? What's your chain here for the reel?
@jamiedurrantmusician
@jamiedurrantmusician Сағат бұрын
In this case, routing was all done via the console. This does add another layer of warmth but nothing like what tape can do for achieving that silky top end and mix glue effect!

So chain was REM converters out > Chilton 2 channels line in, no EQ > direct Chilton channels out > Teac Tape Machine inputs > Teac Monitor outputs > another set of Chilton 2 channels line in, no EQ. So effectively, what we hear difference wise is ONLY the tape.

@@jamiedurrantmusician Nice. Is the tape effect maintained once it goes back through the converters DA into your DAW?
@jamiedurrantmusician
@jamiedurrantmusician Сағат бұрын
@@henryafterall Yes, if running 24bit 48k conversion - or higher, the tape effect and smoothness is captured as an effect. As I mentioned in the video, in the 90s mastering engineer Don Bartley at EMI Studios 301 would run mixes through the EMI console, then via GML mastering EQ and Compressor, and then to an Ampex mastering tape machine. The output of this was then captured via and Apogee AD-500, which was 44.1khz for CD mastering, but even this device was smooth enough to represent the analog effect in digital form. Now days any modern Apogee (including the first generation Quartet that I'm using), or Lynx or RME 24bit converters can do the job well.

There is a philosophical and procedural difference between DAW recording v. Analog recording. And I think it depends on the project to determine which is the appropriate method. I love being forced to bounce tracks together, for example. Parameters can be a good thing sometimes.

The Teac is in-fact not mine! I think it’s fantastic for a domestic or semi pro machine, but in terms of quality it can all be about price. Like if you have more cash go for a pro Revox machine or a bucket of cash a Studor! But regardless the Teac sx model (lower noise) would be the one to find, and make sure the heads are good and rubber roller is not dried out and cracked. Get a degaussing device and clean it with isopropyl alcohol - learn how to keep tape machines squeaky clean and they’ll serve you well ! Find new old stock tape too!

Bouncing to tape gives you that extra tape-compression. I assume you are recording a digital source to analog, so the digital conversion has already happened. The true difference won’t be heard until you are dealing with a analog master, and comparing that to a digitized version.
