*Update May 15, 2020*: This siren is no longer working. The batteries went bad on this siren. As of January 2017, Spartanburg County no longer maintains their siren system (means this siren is not being fixed anytime soon).
Alert: 0:00
Wail: 3:32
Recorded on Saturday, September 5, 2015 . This is a monthly warning siren test of the Spartanburg County Warning Siren System. This siren is tested at the first Saturday of every month at 1:00 PM ET. This siren has the original ESC-864 controller. This siren actually does not rotate to 360°. And this siren is actually not that loud. Not much to say on this. This siren is located in Chesnee, South Carolina at Chesnee Community Fire Department Station #2 near a church off of Cherokee Foothill Scenic Highway (11) and State Road.

and why does it have such a long wind down?
@TrainsAndSirens1
@TrainsAndSirens1 7 жыл бұрын
@TheMinecrafter125: This 4004 is an old one that Whelen no longer makes. Whelen makes the new and is same style as the Vortex. This siren has an old control that has old siren sounds, Whelen no longer uses slow wind downs. To also answer your 2nd question, it's probably back then Whelen wanted their sirens to sound like an old 3 phase sirens.
@thattechdude
@thattechdude 7 жыл бұрын
ah. ok. we used to have one of those but then the city came out and replaced it with the new 4004. they changed out the old control with a new one with the new tones. i noticed that the tones were different soooo, yeah. they latest change they made to it was they went in and changed the siren head and changed out the drivers. They also removed the fin attachment for some reason. i dont know why. i think it was because they added an automatic rotator. im not sure though. they also installed one near the town hall that replaced a model 2.
@DJ2226
@DJ2226 7 жыл бұрын
Here's a rather lengthy explanation of it. Old Whelen controllers use an analog design that used a series of circuits with various components to create the tone. They stopped using that around 1994 when they started to switch to their newer digital version of the ESC-864 controller, which was easier to deal with and used a microprocessor and code to generate tones. The long wind down is due to the way the tone generation circuit was designed on the analog version of the 864 controller. Some of the really early 864 panels had a slower wind up, and the one they were using prior to the 864's release had speedy wind downs. Due to their design you could change the pitch of the alert tone on the fly with a potentiometer located on the controller, and they also had logarithmic wind ups similar to the Federal Signal 2001 or 508. The newer one are set to a fixed pitch and have a linear wind up similar to an ACA P-15 or Sentry siren. The "old version" in the title is because of the controls for this siren. The head itself was being produced from, if I remember correctly, 1988 to around '94. It was mainly used for WPS-4004's, however sometime in '94 when the digital 864 was created they released an early form of the Vortex simply labeled as the "404R," which is what all of the "4004's" in Spartanburg County are with the exception of this siren. After this Whelen changed the head of the siren to the more recent design of the Vortex and 4004. About 5 years ago they started producing these heads out of plastic instead of fiberglass. There were also times where the heads were mismatched. Columbus OH has a few newer 4004 heads on analog 864 panels including one that's dual tone. a bunch of their sirens with older heads have newer 864 panels. Interestingly Montgomery, AL also has some older 4004 heads on newer digital 864 panels, I just recorded one last week.

Why does it only oscillate 270 degrees?
@SteelCitySirensandTrains
@SteelCitySirensandTrains 3 жыл бұрын
I guess Spartanburg County wanted it to rotate up to 270 degrees. Or they just don’t want the wires to snap easily.
@PlatinumEagleStudios
@PlatinumEagleStudios 3 жыл бұрын
@@SteelCitySirensandTrains The wires don't snap easily anyways. Originally the 4004 rotates only 364 degrees, than rotates back the other way. So your logic is kinda flawed. They probably set it to 270 degrees because that's where most of the houses were.

+DJ2226 Somewhere in or around '90-91. City next to me bought theirs in 91, or at least was being promoted at that time whereabouts. I recall vividly seeing literature (as in a brochure/product specs) from an eBay auction several years back that interestingly enough mentions the 4000-4 and -8 sharing the same dimensions as the 3016. I believe that particular print was published around 88-89.
