Absolutely love the concept art by Greg Hughes. Palitoy had such a wealth of talent working on Action Man & they all seemed to get along and have alot of fun, i think all of this put together was a major benefit to Action Mans long running success.

Love Actionman it was my childhood favourite. The space range was great as was the Special team sets. I did have the very rare missile assault set boxed which I deeply regret selling as I can’t even find a loose one. Such great memories and a wonderful figure. Thank you Tony

Ah man thats so cool. As a kid it was the artwork and dioramas in catalogues that really helped sell a toy for me. That original art work is so cool.

Tony you just summed up this range perfectly couldnt agree more! My first ever action man figure was captain zargon which i treasured as a kid. I remember Zargon so vividly and remember loving the box art and his 'sting ray eyes'! I also had the space commander. These were second hand to me as money was always very tight, but i loved the figures regardless of the fact they were someone elses first. Thanks to Greg Hughes who shaped our childhood and also my love of toys since the early 80s..

That was a great video. I love those Special Team designs and I have the idea that some of those were lifted to make the G.I. Joe Battle Force 2000 line over here across the pond. I really wish Hasbro would have made some of the Action Man figures for the Joe lines. Some of those figures are simply amazing and it would have been nice to have some non American military figures from time to time.

Beautifully done, Tony. This one was very special. I sincerely hope that Mr. Hughes is able to rekindle his connection with Mr. Brechin & Mr. Turner. Mr. Hughes' ability to know what a child would want from a toy is spot on and his artwork is gorgeous.

Great video. Never saw the action man ground assault figure as a child, but loved the action force version. The attention to detail is incredible. Also foretelling the use of 'bullpup' style assault rifles, here the EM2 which became the basis of the SA80 which didn't come into use for another decade along with concepts like the helmets. Incredible vision.

I have to say that the art work of Action Man is what really interests me, especially the Space Ranger and Captain Zargon stuff, it's got that Buck Rogers feel to it, mixed in with Thunderbirds, it's just so amazing. All I can say is...Wow! Great, great video! I look at all of the things made by Palitoy you featured in this video and I want them at retail, right now. But made with yesteryear's quality and commitment to detail. It is funny how not one of the big toy companies in the US makes a 1:6 scale figure, comparable on price point and articulation, to Action Man/GI Joe. The accessories is truly where imaginative play begins, allowing the child to suspend disbelief. You joined the military and lived a part of your life like Action Man; putting on the clothes, the gear, the weapons, and going on real world adventures. Preteen Tony would be so envious you WERE Action Man while he had to pretend!

Really fascinating. I am not sure whether Action Man could not actually make an important contribution to our current society. At least in Germany, public service people do not get the respect they really deserve. I mean paramedics, firefighters, Technisches Hilfswerk - and yes, the Bundeswehr (who currently many people in my country feel sorry for or even laugh about - a real shame). With the concept of Action Man, children and adults could have physical portraits of these fascinating services. I do not think any KZfaq video (on which our army tries so very hard, but maybe a bit too much) or smartphone app could have a comparable effect. With figures and vehicles, you can take them off your shelf, play with it (even if you may cringe at that thought), just like girls do with Barbies. I do not mean figures such as DID or similar. They are, IMO, far too detailed to be seriously played with. But if you put such services back into the conscience of children, then maybe not everybody wants to study and become a manager or engineer (big problem here).

It would have been interesting to see what they would have come up with had Star Wars not come out. What other historical figures would they have created? 21st Century Toys gave us a lot of great uniforms and accessories in the early 2000s, but sadly that line died. There is no current producer of interesting (affordable) military toys in the 1/6 scale. You have some smaller producers like BattegearToys, but they don't have the kind of funding or inventory to mass produce their items. I find what we are lacking right now are uniforms and soldiers of the late 19th century to the early 20th century. This time period has only been briefly touched upon, which is a shame. Also, the interwar period from 1919-1930s offers plenty of unexplored variety. On a completely unrelated note, I like how Rom Spaceknight randomly appeared in that one commercial. LOL That was a great toy and comic book. It was one of my favorites actually.

I remembered ROM mainly from the Marvel comics, there was a toy, but I was too old for action figures by then. There was no connection with the GI Joes I had. Curious if ROM was a Palitoy concept, since they were first with the space force line. How does ROM fit in? In the comics he's sent to Earth to destroy wraiths in human form and he is hunted as a monster.
