A lot actually, but that's the nature of fighting games: no matter how good you are, it's darn near impossible to NOT lose. Hell there's a reason there's 5 gods instead 1 "the GOD", because all five regularly beat each other.

The first 'villain' I met during my time with the FGC was with FChamp in '09. It was back in the days of Vanilla SFIV and I was a new and upcoming player that was invited to a local. I lived in Sacramento, CA at the time, and people were talking about other people from other areas of Nor-Cal coming to this local as well. It was then I heard a name drop. "Man, FChamp and a few others from the Bay are also coming over." As a new player, not knowing who 'FChamp' was, I looked him up real quick. From all what I could tell, he was a trash talker, which at the time threw me into a loop. I'm not used to actually seeing someone like this. So, when the time came, and the local started, seeing him person made me nervous. I don't know how to react if I get trash talked to. I know I'm new, so any trash talk about me would make me quit this game. Even through the nervousness though, I shuffled my way to him and asked him if he was willing to play a casual game. He laughed, and said yes. I personally was happy, even after getting rekted by his Boxer. After that casual, he talked to me on how to get better since he could also tell that I was new to the FGC, and that made me want to start playing more and more. To this day, I would like to support FChamp because I personally know that he plays the 'villain' so people will get invested into the FGC more. Not all villains are inherently evil. You just need to understand them better. ~Saka

It's like, this is what happens when you mix entertainment, with a competitive sport, that audience members can very potentially compete in, and easily meet, "the characters"...who are also competitors. It's kind of unique to competitive games I think. And I think it might be most common with fighting games.

+sakabato24 Ryan is a nice guy, honestly. You just have to really let him run his mouth to whoever, just learn from everyone. You don't have to engage, and stay neutral in the silliness. Learn from your mistakes, if someone talks trash, just smile and walk away. Just remember that a true opponent will be impressed with themselves and further surprised that they won. Just remember to never shut down. If they get a perfect, that's your fault too. Be humble. That is their ego, and somewhere their insecurity-- you can improve, they think they're flawless most of the time; with that, you can definitely learn how to develop the different styles of your play. Become a student of the game and its cast, once you get a comfort for all the mechanics and start to understand the unique qualities of each character. Know where those characters shine, and you can begin to deconstruct them with whatever character(s) you choose. Learn the ins and outs of the game, frame data, hurt/hit boxes, etc. You will then have everything ready, so long as you keep your execution, footsies, whiff punishes, and max damage punishes (whiffed shoryuken getting grab punished is not optimal); and you'll then be able to destroy your locals. Just remember you're at a local, not a major. Make friends in your scene, develop with them.

hbox didn't trashtalk but he did more than just win. He was (by his own admission) kind of nasty offscreen and would hit on people's girlfriends and refuse to play friendlies with anyone, and this is on top of being a "lame" player. The community absolutely was and is unfair to him but you gotta realize that this isn't a simple narrative.
@i_marcus_quintus
@i_marcus_quintus 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheStrangeBloke It's a pretty simple narrative, especially since none of his behavior was illegal, even if it was shady. "Man cheats on girlfriend" should be a private affair between the specific people involved, and f he wasn't a top player who played 'lame' it would have been.
@TheStrangeBloke

@@i_marcus_quintus Hbox played lame, won a lot, cheated on his gf, AND was an asshole off camera. I can produce videos where he admits to (in the past) aggressively flirting with every woman in the venue and being an asshole to his fans. Any one of these issues would have earned him some hate, but together they formed the perfect storm. In the end he has received far, far more hate than he actually deserves but its still incorrectto say that he won a lot and did nothing else wrong.

The title of "villain" is very subjective and depends on the values of the community. A great example is hungrybox. In melee, he is seen as the worst of the worst and the reason why the scene is dying because he plays jigglypuff. The community has grown to expect melee to be fast and reaction heavy and the current highest profile player playing a slow character will not fly. In ultimate, the community is much younger and not as well defined. Because of the massive roster, players are generally more open to different playstyles. In that scene, hungrybox is seen as the old timer that just likes to have fun, and is even respected for playing jigglypuff.

I love villains as they bring the thing we all need but never want to be: A bad guy (not a bad person but more like a character you make up). They bring something that makes the community passionate even if before they weren't at all. They are your spices to your already good food and make it better, without it then it could be pretty bland.

That's why Core-A referred to him specifically as a subversion of the "clown" archetype. He's both a figurative and literal wild card in the whole conflict, who didn't play by the unwritten rules of the other mafia criminals. I became a villain during my school's Smash Ultimate tournaments. I mained Little Mac, and the moment the announcer said GO I would rush and start having Mac swing for the fences like I was trying to punch a hole through my opponent. The funny part was the "villainous" part of my persona was how terrifying and serious I got when I started playing. Normally during school, I'd have a smile on my face and joke around with people. Put me in a competitive scenario like the smash tournament, I go dead silent, lurch forward to better focus on the screen and have a blank look on my face. Like a switch just flipped in my head and I knew it was go time. I was less like an overtly evil villain, I was more like a monster from a horror movie because I went for the quick kill after the round begins. I got two full stock wins, and by the time I graduated I told the students of the middle and school population (we were a k-12 so the grades intermingled) to keep the smash legacy going.

I’ve got a villain story. This one was at smash 4 tournament that was organized at my school. It was pretty impromptu, i kinda signed up and went during my lunch period. So I get there and the guy who was setting the tournament set up a bracket for everyone and people began to play. The first feud came when people were picking controllers. As some of these people were here for fun, they didn’t have a controller. I didn’t bring one because I didn’t even know there was a tourney today, so nobody had their own controllers. The organizer brought a whole bunch of of them but he wasn’t willing to share some of them, namely the GameCube controllers. He had 2 but didn’t want us playing with them. I got stuck with game pad. That’s not so bad, but considering the option was there I would preferred it. So I move up in the ranks. I was probably the best player there. Not because I’m some smash god, I’ve just had more experience. Most of these people were just picking up smash. So I make it to the finals and I’m playing toon link against a link. And this is where the organizer really began antagonizing. He kept yelling into my ear “you suck. You’re trash.” Which really got to my head. He said I was “Not playing his main correctly.” (I was playing dedede before) I ended up losing. I gg’d and left shortly after talking with a few of the other people who didn’t understand the game’s mechanics. The organizer then went on to beat the champion, and win in an 8 play smash. Needless to say I was angry. I was glad I kept my cool though. At least the other people were cool, and complimenting me rather than saying I sucked.

I know this is an old video, but the Filipino Champ vs KaneBlueRiver rivalry in MVC3 was something to put in the spotlight. Was like an anime arc. FC humiliating KBR, and the next day KBR slapping FC ass, with the whole crowd cheering on his back. One of the funniest arcs in the FGC history IMO.

I think an interesting and related topic is how villains can become heros and heroes villains. For example, early on in his career, the Melee player Mango was actually seen as something of a villain, especially on the East Coast, due to being nearly as cocky as Leffen and winning everything for over a year. But now, he's the biggest face in the community by a landslide. I guess this raised the aspect of charisma; some have the kind that makes you love them no matter what (Mango), the kind that makes you love to hate them (Leffen) and those that just kind of lack it altogether (Hungrybox).
@yurplethepurple2064
@yurplethepurple2064 Жыл бұрын
Agreed except for hbox, I feel like most uncharismatic people don’t make a career out of live entertainment that depends so heavily on their personality being interesting (streaming).
@Tr0lliPop
@Tr0lliPop 3 жыл бұрын
another way to be a villain in my opinion is to play in a way that makes people think you're playing the game wrong, but win anyway. an example of this would be hungrybox, playing a "lame" slow character (specifically jigglypuff) in a game considered by its audience to be the epitome of hype and fast pace. except there is the fact that he was too successful for his own good, ending up unironically hated outside of the game by many, as far as I can tell.

Villains can make it really fun when they happen I do have to admit. Even if there's no flat out villains (And it could be argued that it's sort exaggerated for fun most of the time), a bit of salt and beef is whats given this scene its flavor compared to other competitive gaming scenes. If it gets too sterile it just feels like there's something missing. I do have some beef though, with calling people who win too much "villains" just because they win all the time and become the guy to beat, regardless of whether they're a really nice guy or not. But I know that's a distinct (and relatively common) frustration people eventually get with someone who just becomes too predictable in their winnings, and I guess I can't really think of another word for it; but it still always seemed a bit angry mob of scrubs to me to think of someone as a villain just because people can't beat them. But damn, Naniwa. I didn't really watch Starcraft 2 so I had no idea something that dramatic had been going on there (And to a player as experienced as Nestea even I've heard of him.). Kind of makes me wish I had been watching the game around that time to have experienced that.

I became a villain at a local for smash ultimate, a good chunk of people were tier whores who got mad at me beating ikes, lucina's and palutena using only pit. I lost to a hardcore zelda main and it was hype and fun. I'll gladly play a villain if I fight someone like that

In my city there's a place called Game Room, where gamers meet to either play board games, socialize and- of course- play games. They have many pcs, ps4s, xboxes etc set up aswell as a nintendo switch lounge and some other stuff to play around with. 2 years ago, a friend of mine managed to get a surprising amount of people to play warsow, an arena shooter similar to quake 3 thats free2play and runs on every single potato pc. So we started to have some competitions and on our best days we got 26 people to have duels against each other until one player stands as a winner. About a year into that whole warsow scene we started, a 17 y old unknown dude came along and seemed pretty interested. We gave him te game on a usb stick and he started to practice warsow religiously. Soon he started to get onto really high rankings, like at least 4th place on every competition. Many younger players looked up to him, many started to play BECAUSE of him, and he was just a great player overall. The thing was, he was a pretty evil, though hyped up villain. He talked LOTS of trash, but always against players he knew he would beat. He was still being celebrated by many other players, until THAT day. There was a competition where he only got 2nd place, and he seemingly got very angry. He said things he shouldnt've said and challenged the actual winner to a revenge-match. Noone seemed to care he used such offensive speech and the event got hyped up even more, to the point where there would be about 35 people coming to the game room, the day of the duel. At first he had a great run, but he still lost because he couldnt keep his temper down. He got even angrier than before, tried to physically attack and harm the way more obese and obviously physically weaker winner of the duel until me and other people stopped him. He started saying things noone should ever say to anyone and their parents, he got banned from the shop, never came back, never returned some games he borrowed from people he knew at the game room and just left an overall weird atmosphere. After that day, noone seemed to care about the game anymore, the dry aftertaste of his loss made everyone stop playing warsow and the story of our first and only ever "competitive" scene we had in my city died out. A real villain he was, but not one every great story needs. So kids, always play fair and never be a bad loser and a funkiller. You'll just make a huge fool out of yourself and probably lose friends along the way.

My friend Ronilo (whom you've actually used footage from) had a sort of rival whom he beat in a tournament and it was some kind of big deal. But then later, the same guy challenged him in a match outside of a tournament, but under a different name. Ronilo had a day and just wanted to play a round to unwind, wasn't really taking the match seriously, and lost. No big deal... until the guy advertised the recorded match as like some kind of big rematch. I'm not sure if he used some kind of trick to make his name appear different either to Ronilo or in the recording, but it was a really cowardly way of getting a rematch that wasn't even supposed to be a rematch.

+LiangHuBBB That's interesting, I'm Irish and here Mc Gregor is seen as a hero. That's national favoritism of course, but Ireland is generally an underdog country in the majority of sports, UFC, FGC, etc, so to come from there and beat the players from the biggest countries in the world gives him more of that hero's edge.

+Murderous Neil (Macal) Conor is definitely seen as the vilain in many places outside Ireland, specifically in hardcore mma purist circles (not casual fans). We all know he's just playing a character though, he s using the good old wrestling "cheer for the heel" tactic. The Nate Diaz fight is interesting because it has that Heel vs Heel dynamic loll. In the end, no one really hates Mcgregor, the only bad thing about him are his blind fans who say ridiculous things like he could move up, fight Jon Jones at a catchweight and beat him easily. SOunds ridiculous, but some peopele are dead serious when they say that loll.

He made such incredible faces pre-match and when he was playing, and the _glare_ he gave when he lost one was just, astounding in the midst of it all, proceeding to end the night with the greatest phrase in the context, (in Japanese, lol): "This. Is. *BEHEMOTH.* " B) I was initially there just to hear the announcement for the newest Guilty Gear Strive character at the time, (Happy Chaos!!
