FMA VS FMA:B series finally continues with the homunculi analysis! Whoa nelly what a time to be alive. Also, I accidentally uploaded this as unlisted but in a playlist so some people found it earlier and left comments on that version. Out of fear that KZfaq wouldn't send it out to subscribers properly now, I reuploaded it. Thanks to the 128 people who found it early for being so on top of things. You are majestic.

The video has been out long enough that now I can leave some replies to common complaints pinned so others see them: 1. "The intro is too long"--Some people seem to like it, some don't. Wanted to add a bit of levity at the start, and also explain why I'm not doing this analysis the way I previously said I would. Admittedly, it doesn't contain any crucial information. If you aren't interested in it, skip to 00:02:10 2. "Pronunciation of ____ is wrong"--Yes, I messed up pronouncing Selim. My bad. I'll pronounce it correctly from now on. No idea why I had it in my head that it's pronounced that way. However, the pronunciation of "Lin" is based on the official manga translation. Even so, since many people are confused by it, I will refer to him as "Ling" in future parts of the series. 3. "What about Father and Dante?"--I will cover them in another video. 4. "You didn't provide enough detail on certain homunculi"--I will be covering other aspects of the homunculi in other videos. In particular, the Father and Dante video will have a lot on them. Basically, I had to cut certain things out and move them into other videos to avoid repeating myself later. 5. "Mangahood is an annoying word"--Fair enough. I knew that some people wouldn't like it, but I chose to go with it. It makes certain sentences easier to write, and shortens the overall length of the script a bit. I'm still undecided, but I may stop referring to it as that (or just use that term less) in future videos. If I notice any other consistent things coming up in the comments that I want to address, I will add them to this comment. Thanks for watching and reading through this.

I remember thinking that too. I also liked 2003's Pride as he was the only homunculus who could age and I could imagine Dante having pride in her ability to effect that particular creation. Something that surprised me about Lust in brotherhood, and something I didn't pick up on until a second viewing, is in the episode death of the undying, when Jean Havoc is going on about why he couldn't resist Lust, Lust looks to him and, just for a moment, her expression softens and she gives a genuine loving look toward Havoc, before she snaps out of it and returns to glaring at Mustang, implying she might have felt some genuine affection towards Jean. It's nice subtle bit of characterization that's easy to miss.
@Nightman221k

Intriguing idea. Havoc and Lust were inspired in design by two of Arakawa’s earlier characters who were romantically linked so that might have been a fun nod to the character she shares a similar appearance to liking the one similar to Havoc.
@Polomance862
@Polomance862 2 жыл бұрын
Another part to know is that Lust's name is deceptive. She is the object of other people's lust, but she takes delight in "bloodlust". But like all humans, Lust desires genuine human connections. When Havoc begun showing affections and genuine emotions; Lust is touched and has a moment of clarity. But she's simply not molded enough by said feelings to give way to her creation's purpose by Father. Had Jean and Lust more time to continue their relationship. She might've explored these new feelings and find value like Wrath had done with Mrs. Bradley, taking something as her own outside her creator's plan.

Eventually Scar's brother figured it out but then used it to give Scar back his arm after he lost it (thereby foiling Lust's/Dante's/Father's plans). Brotherhood's homunculi were fine characters who served the story well, but conceptually they lacked the versatility of the 2003 homunculi. The 2003 homunculi were all created by and based on different people which gave them different motivations for seeking similar goals and different backstories while the Brotherhood homunculi were all just created by Father and their motivations are all "Let's help daddy dearest." All in all, it makes the 2003 homunculi more interesting as a group even if there were a couple Brotherhood homunculi who were individually more interesting than their 2003 counterparts.

Specifically since Japan can't compete on quantity, they compete on quality. It's not like you can't get imported fruit in Japan, but the import policies are incredibly strict, and this somewhat protects the domestic market, but not enough for domestic farmers to be able to sell them at the same price. Therefore Japanese farmers have instead focused on making their fruit the best in the world, in the same way they focused on their beef.

I wished you had talked a bit about how the homunculi relate back to Father. Because each of them is a distillation of one of Father’s “sins”, they each represent aspects of his personality and desires. For example, Greed makes a point that he doesn’t tell lies. Why? Lying most certainly would help him get more money, possessions, power, sex, etc. Indeed, Father tells multiple lies for his own benefit (like the transmutation in Xerxes).So why doesn’t Greed lie? It’s because he and Father so desperately desire the Truth. Greed wants to possess Truth, so, as a means of achieving that, at least symbolically, he is always honest. And this is extremely relevant at the end. Greed realizes that he doesn’t truly want possession over everything in the world, including Truth. He wants human connection and friendship. When he has that, he is willing to abandon his other desires to protect those friends. And so, he abandons the truth and lies to Ling in order to protect him. In contrast, Father never realizes what he truly wants. He goes to his death ignorant of that.

@@DaDunge He's willing to delay gratification in order to gain a larger reward. He represents the key balance between hoarder and waster, both of which represent the extreme ends of the Sin of Greed. Contrast this to Gluttony, who is short-sighted and can't really think too far beyond fulfilling his most basic needs, primarily being food. He constantly wants food in excess, believing it will fill the void he feels within. Food isn't the only thing he craves however: he also desires emotional support and validation from others. He receives this primarily from Lust. They seem to relate to one another because according to the Divine Comedy, Lust and Gluttony are considered the least offensive of the Sins, and thus occupy the higher and less severe levels of Hell.

+Adnan Ilyas The thing is that the Father desired what Greed desired, even the Father say it at some point: ''I know you the best, you are my greed, so anything you are desiring now, I most likely desired at some point.'' And he definitely desired connections, friendship, family... and we see that trough the other sins too. First of all Pride, who is the only homunculi that is made after his image... Pride is basically like his child, his descendant, which is even more obvious when you take in consideration that he calls himself Father, and he has no other name - Pride is the first Homunculus, and he presented to himself to him as "Father'' ... also, Prides real form is that of a fetus. Envy is jealous on humans and their ability to recover and rise up trough their connections. Wrath despise looking down on them, he is actually admiring humans deep into his heart. Lust and Gluttony do not share this ambiguity because unlike the others, those two sins are instinctual not emotional, while Sloth is... well, sloth. So as he gives up on his sins he ends up losing his answers together with his humanity. Is an irony of the Equivalent Exchange Law, as he is sacrificing his humanity to create lives, as he sacrifices his answers to create the tool that would help him to reach the Truth, and in the end he ends up siting clueless and ignorant before the Truth and is sent behind the Gate as punishment for giving up his humanity and answers in the first place. I loved the 2003 series at it's time, thou I hated and hate the Shamballa movie conclussion, but the Brotherhood is better in the way that is playing very well its philosophical concepts. In 2003 the Homunculus are humane, their role is purely tragic, and the Truth is never addressed, is just a concept of a cool power ... the Parallel World thing was... bullshit. Meanwhile, Brotherhood is all about the truth, the entire story is built on the 2 concepts of the Alchemy, the Equivalent Exchange Law in the form of sacrifices, and 'All is One, and One is All' as salvation or solution to the first, which makes alchemy in FMA:B more than a cool power like it is in 2003, but a lesson, a core value of the storyline itself.

But Ed vs. Greed tho. He uses the properties of carbon against Greed after realizing that's how he hardens his skin. Mustang also overcomes his weakness against water against Lust by transmuting the water into hydrogen and oxygen gas, and igniting it with a lighter.

Mustang's flame alchemy in general is a cool chemical thing. He transmutes the air surrounding his target (and a thin line to himself) into hydrogen and oxygen before lighting it with the glove. It's a very simple alchemical reaction which is probably why the transmutation circle is so plain, but it still makes sense. Changing the allotrope of the carbon covering Greed and then later Father from graphene to graphite was pretty cool too.
@Red_Bastion
@Red_Bastion 4 жыл бұрын
@@typhoonzebra What does confuse me though has got to do with how alchemical research goes, which unfortunately isn't explained much at all. Mustang's flame alchemy is supposedly very advanced. His master spent a large portion of his life creating it, and despite its immense power and how much military might it provided, no one else had created it. So the fact that it's a fairly simple transmutation, just a deconstruction of air particles, and that the circle is so simple, makes me wonder why it was so difficult to create. In fact, scar theoretically should be able to do the same thing, just with far less precision.

Very simple navigation techniques went undiscovered for centuries because of the assumption the earth was flat. Very simple hygiene advancement were slowed because of the assumption that it was smell that carried disease. It's very possible given their 19th century level knowledge that assumptions of what air and gasses are, stand in the way of progress and that once their alchemists realise the error in their assumptions, flame alchemy becomes commonplace.

I really don’t mind the “simplicity” of Sloth in Brotherhood. His conditions tells us so much about Father and foreshadows the reason for the humans’ success against him. Father is so individualistic and so greedy, that even though he can’t wait for his circle to be drawn, he doesn’t want to depend on anyone else for it either. So he creates a being and enslaves it! Father’s fortunes changed for the better when he helped a human slave, but ironically he learned nothing about the value of collaboration and equality. The relationship between Father and his “child”, Sloth, is really unfair. More than the other Homunculi, Sloth was created to be a slave and nothing more. On the other hand, the camaraderie of the Briggs forces reveals the plot and the communion between Hohenheim and the Xerxes souls sets out the counterattack. Also various downtrodden people were eventually valued as equals.
@notalive5479
@notalive5479 2 жыл бұрын
This comment is old, but I'll respond anyway. As far as the personality of Sloth itself is concerned, I find it to be quite interesting, even if it is simple. Father himself is, put simply, empty. He has a hole he can't fill, and his Homunculi all have the same problem. They all try and fill it in different ways. Envy fills it with hatred, Lust with pleasure (sadism in particular), Greed with possessions, Pride with himself, Gluttony with consumption, and Wrath with what little control he can find. Father is sort of a mix of them all, trying to become a higher being who has everything in the palm of his hand. Sloth is different though. Sloth has a void, but unlike the others he doesn't even try to fill it. Because he never tries to fill that void with anything, he has no will, nothing to work towards, nothing to drive him. He allows himself to be a slave because he doesn't have the will to do anything else. He is the despair that Father has tried to bury, the empty shell that he truly is, and the future that is in store for him should he succeed, and lose everything. Life sucks for Sloth. EDIT: After spending some time thinking, I've decided that Gluttony has more to him than just liking to eat. All of the Homunculi have their root in Father's mind, so what does Gluttony represent in that? He can't represent simple gluttony, since even at the start, he had much loftier goals than just eating. However, the main ability of Gluttony is the ability to draw anything and everything into an unending void that can never be filled. In that way, Gluttony could be Father's desire to fill the void in his soul. The other sins are what Father tries to use as fuel, to keep himself going, while Sloth is the polar opposite of Gluttony. Gluttony wants to consume whatever he can find to fill a void that can never be filled, while Sloth tries to shut himself off from the world and falls into despair.

Greed is my favourite character in both versions of FMA, which is an amazing feat when you consider how different they are in subtle ways. 2003 Greed never treats his minions as possessions while brotherhood's does. Brotherhood's Greed has so much time to develop and change and form bonds while 2003 Greed has like 4 episodes. Yet both are so impactful in their series, so charismatic, so complex while serving arguably the most important turning point. I honestly think 2003 Greed is one of the best characters in fiction because he has so little time to show so much off and yet fulfills a role at the same time, something not many other characters can do without distracting away from the plot or coming off as a little too shallow, at least not without a lot of time. And yes, there are plenty of characters in fiction who can do the same in one episode, but I feel like Greed 's sheer quantity of development is just that great. They will forever be my favourite FMA characters

An interesting point to be made about the Homunculi in Brotherhood is that their strength and power are metaphorically tied to how much of that particular sin Father displayed originally. It makes sense that Lust is the weakest of the Homonculi and the first to die because... well Father spent most of his life as an asexual ball of shadow trapped in a bottle. Safe to say that he wasn't spending that time feeling horny. Compare that to Pride, which is the sin that defines Father and the sin that he has the most of. Pride is the only Homunculous to technically "survive" in the end, and is one of the last Homonculi to be defeated.

The analysis you have on both mangahood Lust and 2003 Lust was so good. So many people bash on mangahood for being "weak" or having "no character", but I have always beleived both versions of her are intresting especially given that in both versions she personifies different forms of lust that are not explored often in media. Lust, simply put, is an obessive yearning for something. Obviously, most media explores the theme of lust as a lust for someone. However, both Fullmetal Alchemist incarnations have Lust represent more than the desire for someone. In mangahood, Lust is Father's desire for power. In 2003, Lust is the personalification of a lust to understand the nature of humanity- a lust for knowledge. And I think both of these choices made for her character are intresting in their own right.

Tristan Courson envy has fantastic development in brother hood his realization of his own pathetic nature and that the cycle of hatred must end. Wrath in his final battle embraces his human side shedding the name and title father gave him, and for someone who hated humans before that’s a lot. I would say brotherhood and fma develop different homunculi, but their all great in both versions.

So what I'm gonna say is probably obvious by my profile pic but I absolutely LOVE 2003 Wrath. Wrath's character hit me where it hurt. I'm someone who's had "mommy issues" since I was born. Childhood abuse, neglect, and almost doing self-harm. Watching Wrath go through being put in a world where he's being hurt for no reason and slowly hate humans hit personally. His character arc helped me a lot through hard times and when I got sent a mental hospital, I drew him because I started remembering how much his character meant to me. Idk if this is going to reach anyone, but please understand why someone might prefer the 2003 humonculi (is that how you spell it I can't spell for shit) the characters in 2003 are very tragic and can be an emotional comfort for many people. They made me feel as though I wasn't alone.

Her last episode repeatedly had me in tears and would echo in my thoughts frequently, so at some point I sat down with it and hit pause every time I had a thought or feeling to write them down and explore them, why I thought they were being triggered and where I thought they came from. If we're talking about 03 Bradley/Pride then I think he did love his son, but it was a shallow sort of love. Bradley genuinely loves Selim, but because of his hatred for humanity he's rationalized his love for his family as being that they are different from other humans. The reason he gives Selim the key to the safe is because he genuinely thinks that Selim is better than any other human and that he could eventually be the next ruler of Amestris for Dante's plans once he dies (since he is the only Homonculus that ages). You can see that he genuinely loves his son by the way he prioritizes his safety if anything happened while investigating the basement, and the way he encouraged and picked up his son's spirits after he discovered the safe (if he really didn't care for Selim at all, I'd imagine that when he found out about the "secret treasure," he would've disposed of his son and made it look like an accident). It's also the fact that he loves his son so much that causes him to make an attempt on his life. When Selim comes into the room with his one weakness he realizes that his son really is just a regular human like everyone else. Because of his hatred for humans he should hate Selim, but because Selim is his son he loves him. These two emotions inside of him were pitted against one other and Bradley was unable to reconcile between his hatred for humanity (his Pride) and his genuine love for his son (his pride and joy), and because he's unable to reconcile the two he resolves to kill him. Therefore I believe that Bradley didn't kill Selim out of hatred but rather because he loved him in a twisted sort of way. That love made him unable to let Selim live because that love was just as strong as his pride.

I like how Manga-hood's Homunculi have their more human characteristics/flaws fleshed out as the plot moves forward, and I like how 2003's Homunculi were formerly human, giving them tragic backstories and more of a personal conflict with the protagonists. You forgot to mention that not all the homunculi are created through normal means. In 2003 Gluttony was not a mistake - he was a military project (like B-hood's dolls) and has no remains, no memory and his connection between body and mind is so thin that it can be cut off in an instant. Yet he displays a lot of emotion, interest and never treat humans as lesser beings. He just has no understanding that concrete, grass, wood and humans are different things. Coincidentally, this makes his understanding of humans while shallow, the closes to Father's and Dante's. Bradley in 2003 is also not really normal. He is the only homunculus that has the ability to age and procreate (not sure about the second part), and that makes him the closest to humans out of all the homunculi. Of course he hates humans, his pride beaten down by the fact that he ages and he copulates and probably has some other human needs while being this perfect creature in his own mind. His son, on the other hand...

I've been waiting for a new part for this series and I am not disappointed with this! The way you explained how each character was handled in each series was perfect, and ending it on Wrath's emotional final moment was a great way to end it. I'm also really happy more people see the good sides of FMA 2003 instead of immediately watching Brotherhood because it's closer to the manga so it's automatically better. 2003 is more focused on the characters as individuals and on personal stories and arcs rather than mangahood's focus on ideals and answering the big questions. This video really highlighted it for me, with how 2003 basically has humans stripped of their identity and part of the story revolves around them trying to understand or even reach that humanity while mangahood basically has these creations who have been taught to look down on human emotion learning about them and blurring the line between human and monster. They cover the same subject matter, but by shifting the focus from the grand conflict to the individual one, suddenly we get this very different picture between versions and I find that amazing

To be fair, 2003 Wrath's plotline is so tragic, that at some point I began counting for him to have a "good ending" instead of Ed&Al. Father viewed human sins as totally evil and useless and so he discarded them from himself in order to get closer to perfection. What he failed to realize is that with slight tweaks, human sins can be valuable emotions and even virtuous: Lust: can be tweaked into Lust for a noble goal, ambition, and striving for a better tomorrow Gluttony: can be tweaked into not ever being satisfied with staying the same. Always wanting more out of life and our of one's self. A hunger to improve and search out the truth. Greed: can be tweaked to be more like desire and drive to obtain ones goals, not being satisfied with "good enough". Perseverance. Wrath: can be tweaked to be like anger at seeing injustice in the world, righteous fury. Being upset at corrupt people, punishing the wicked. Pride: can be tweaked to mean taking pride in one's work or ones self. Feeling accomplished or happy with a job well done. Showing admiration for another. Envy: can be tweaked to be more like a desire for togetherness. Not just wanting what people have, but wanting the sense of community that comes from people banding together. Being envious of a better tomorrow, hope for the future. Sloth: can be tweaked to mean patience, being slow and thoughtful, rationality and taking time to reflect and consider all information. Knowing when additional exertion would be counterproductive, prudence.

spiderdude2099 Well - this part of the Brotherhood did not seem very persuasive to me (as the ending in general due to the number of reasons). The father person got rid of 7 human weaknesses to be a perfect being. But at the very same time he was arrogant (looking down at ppl, considering them to be only a source material for his power), was obsessed with the idea to consume the god to gain absolute knowledge/power (therefore he still was greedy). Overall - just a typical tyrant villian using others to become just another master of the world
@johnciulla2484

Ehhhh I think the portrayal of the sins in FMAB is actually supposed to be somewhat of a commentary in the nature of each sin. For example, Gluttony is so innocent and facile-minded because the sin of gluttony is itself rather innocent and facile-minded. It would generally make sense not to consume more than is necessary, but we do so in an innocent attempt to satiate our cravings. The outward effects of the sin are indirect, whereas a sin like Greed or Envy is very much direct in their outward effects. This is why characters like Greed and Envy have so much more depth. It's because the sins of greed and envy ARE so much deeper. It's why Lust is so lacking in outward emotion, because sexual lust is detached from emotion. It's why Sloth possesses so much power, yet wields in so lazily. Not all human sins are equal, and thus it makes sense that not all of the sins in FMAB are portrayed equally. I could go more in-depth on how each Homonculus, their life, their death, their overall character development, and their abilities each relate back to the sins upon which they are based, but for the sake of time I'll leave it at this.

It's actually a peculiar thing with each version of Sloth in that they both present a relationship with responsibility. Mangahood's Sloth was born out of Father's laziness, and he's burdened with tasks that he never asked for, with the only promised reward being that he'll be able to stop, rest, and do nothing once he's finished what's demanded of him. His only desire and the thing he works so hard to achieve is something humans take for granted and even loath or condemn; the ability to simply do nothing. In a way it's poetic that the Homunculi treated the most like a tool doesn't want to achieve a semblance of humanity or always be useful, but to become a tool that has served its usefulness and is discarded. He has no other incentive, and he's never given one, so there's a small comfort in his death in that he'll never be forced to do anything he doesn't want to do ever again. As for 2003 Sloth, her relationship with responsibility is that of motherhood and its acceptance. She wants to be a mother, but she doesn't want to be Ed and Al's mother. They aren't her kids and she didn't choose to have them, but they exist because of the things she did in a past life. She wants nothing to do with them, but she's drawn to them and can't escape them, and so the only recourse is to kill them so she can move on and live her life free of the responsibility their existence foists upon her. With Wrath it's a different story, because while she's not necessarily given a choice to adopt him(although the job could have been passed to Envy, Lust or even Pride), Wrath is not something from her old life, even if he has Edward's arm and leg which may have endeared him to her in the first place. Wrath is something new that's been presented to her, so she can choose to love him of her own volition and be the mother he needs and that she wants to be. That is the crux of her character; rejecting old responsibilities and accepting new ones to try and move on and find peace. Ironic then that this form of escapism ties her down and dooms her to a fate she doesn't want, and I don't think the moment is lost on her either, as while she's dying she finally decides to play the role of parent for Edward, praising him for his success in severing their ties to one another and the past, while also telling him to clean up his mess, probably referring to Wrath and the issue of Dante and the remaining Homunculi, and accept the burden of responsibility as a final farewell.

It also give human transmutation, the “ultimate taboo” a bit more of a taboo feeling, that this is why it’s forbidden. You create life, but flawed life and at a cost that’s far too high. Which is always what stayed with me from 2003, is that these creatures, the Homunculi were created by people either at their lowest ebb (a man who lost his lover, a mother who lost her child, children who lost their mother) or by people so far remove from humanity they only know they can do it and never consider if they should (Dante especially, which reinforces how far from humanity she has moved not only through her body jumping, but also through creating multiple homunculi.) Sloth being Ed and Al’s mother also gave the series a bit more punch, especially since Ed’s fight with her comes after we find Shou Tucker making Ninas in an attempt to fix his mistakes, a little ham fisted but it did a good job pushing the theme of letting go of the past. Granted, I can appreciate Brotherhood’s take as well, the homunculi literally being the shreds of humanity father has rejected.

That Lust focused 2003 episode was one of the best episodes straight out of any anime, that and the Nina moment . Holy shit, FMA and FMAB is still one of THE BEST if not the BEST well written animes/mangas to this day.

There's one thing about Bradley's character in 2003 that seems pretty obvious to me, but I don't see anyone talking about it. This is a very secretive character so the details that slip through the story seemed to me simply impossible not to notice. In the story arc about the creation of the philosopher's stone in Lior, you can notice a scene where in one room at the window are Bradley and Gluttony and look at a column of soldiers who are preparing to attack. Gluttony anticipates their fate of being used as raw material for the philosopher's stone to which Bradley replies to Gluttony that he is a monster who is not capable of experiencing human intimacy. That is, he exalted himself above the other homunculi. Then we find out that Bradley was created in such a way that most of all to be like a human. An interesting point is that he does not sympathize with people, on the contrary, as we learn in the end, he despises them. He does not want to be a human, but believes that the human traits that he has is what all homunculi subconsciously strive for and this amuses his Ego. You can remember how Envy tried to insult him by calling him a Human poser. In my opinion this is the ambiguity that you didn't see. Unlike other homunculi, which also proudly consider themselves superior to humans (although in fact they sublimate their inferiority complex), Bradley considers himself superior to both humans and homunculi, since he believes that he contains the traits of both species and this expresses his Pride. It seems to me that his more pronounced pride was the result of the sublimation of an inferiority complex only multiplied by two, because he did not feel completely at home either among humans or among homunculi About why he gave up the key to the safe. I was interested in that, too. It seems to me that making complex logical assumptions about this is the most pointless thing to do. It is best to follow the simplest path. That is, as we know this is the most human homunculus that is able to experience the rudiments of emotions for people. And when he gave the key to his son, it mattered to him emotionally. In addition, no one knows about the weakness of homunculi, even the Mustang, so from his point of view, this was not a risk. After strangling Salem, he took out his anger on his son, for his (Bradley's) mistake of experiencing such a human "weakness" as trust and most likely he understood this but did not recognize it. If you are familiar with the concept of Ressentiment, you know what I mean. Not admitting your mistakes is one of the most obvious manifestations of Pride. P.S. This is a great video. I'm glad you're back

I'm beyond delighted to see someone sticking up for 2003 Pride. He's the most underappreciated homunculus in either show, and I weary greatly of people assuming he lacks depth compared to mangahood Bradley because of the lateness of the reveal, the manner of his end, and/or his lack of sympathetic qualities. Would I have liked to see his relationship his son explored more? Yes, I would, as that would have enhanced him still further. But, with no disrespect intended to our host, I believe there *is* enough material in the show to infer why what he does makes perfect sense for his character, once you start to think about the things the show assumes it doesn't have to explicitly point out in dialogue because it trusts the viewer to intuit them based on what it has shown us about the characters' behavior, personalities, etc. Me, I love the clever, arrogant bastard that is 2003 Pride. He's terrifying not because he's physically powerful [although he is] but because of just how *freaking successful* he's been at distracting attention away from himself. Watching the show a second time, knowing about the reveal, and then carefully observing the nuances of his behavior throughout the whole thing- his sense of humor, the hidden meanings in several of his comments that only he, being in the know, would get- its awesome He's a consummate troll who's reveling in every single minute of what he's doing, and I find his completely unapologetic evil absolutely delicious to watch. Some people might claim that his unrelenting vileness makes him less interesting than his other fellow homunculi, who are more conflicted. Me, I find that it actually enhances the other homunculi, by providing a contrast to them, a glimpse of what they could be if they stopped giving a crap and fully embraced all of the worst impulses of the very humanity which they had more of from the start than they thought they did. Which also makes 2003 Pride an effective thematic foil to many of the protagonists of the show as well, honestly. And that's the key thing about his character's function in the show- he's a thematic foil. If you can't get that, you won't get his character at all. He's a massive part of the plot, arguably just as -if not more- important than Dante herself at getting the villains' plans rolling. But more than that, he is [together with Dante] the living embodiment of the very evils that the protagonists' failings -and by extension, humanity's sins in general- have allowed to take root. I love King Bradley as Wrath; he's my favorite villain in mangahood, and he deserves every ounce of praise he's received. But he doesn't need defending, as even people who hate mangahood generally concede that he was a well-crafted villain. King Bradley as Pride, on the other hand, tends to go underappreciated even by diehard fans of the 2003 series. A lot more thought was put into his character than is often supposed. I've seen FMA 2003 multiple times, and I'm not going to lie- after careful consideration, *he* is my favorite villain in the show. And I'm going to stick up for my favorite bastard until the day I die, because boy howdy did he earn it in my book. :)

@@Lowart Oh, thanks. I hope I didn't sound arrogant in the part of my text where I'm addressing you. I really understand that making such videos is a lot of work. I would like to add that I would be happy to see a spin-off of this video, in which you compare the role of homunculi in general and not individually. Not only from the point of view of the story, but for example the feelings that they caused you in each of the series adaptations) There are so many interesting things that I think you should pay attention to. I will write about some of them when I have time.

@@deVillefort63 Yes, I absolutely agree with you. I like that Pride 03 always needs to play his fake role, because unlike 09 (I mean mangahood) the top of the government does not know about the homunculi and the true meaning of the wars that the Fuhrer unleashes. And in General the aura of mystery that accompanies every appearance of homunculi almost to the very end of the show is something that I adore. I also don't understand why everyone thinks Wrath 09 is such a deep character. Yes, he is a badass, Yes, he talks complexly and he has his own philosophy and Outlook on life. But God, it all looks so schematic and declarative. And the fact that he died at peace is so obviously made an arc of redemption that it rather annoyed me and I did not see any poetry in it. I generally don't like the concept of character arches especially when they are made so obviously.His entire "rich inner world" is always expressed through detached pathos monologues.

Oh heck yeah! I've missed these videos - super cool to see a new one. The thoughts are always so in depth and detailed. I like that you highlight, how having some of the homoculi be simplistic isn't bad - it's totally fine to have flat characters, just as long as they serve the story right, their gimmick is strong enough and there are other characters with actual development. Cause yeah, complexity takes time and a story shouldn't have to always do that for everybody - simplicity can be fine

2003 homunculi deaths were still very ironic: Greed died having been satisfied of getting Ed to kill him (& telling him how to beat his brethren) Lust dies at the hands of a child that yearned for his momma (wrath) Sloth dies exerting herself trying to kill the Elric bros Pride dies by his own hubris (keeping his weakness nearby & in his son’s possession no less) Envy dies satisfied at destroying hoenheim before becoming transmutation material Gluttony is consumed as material in a transmutation Wrath dies at will, sacrificing himself so he can live with Izumi in the afterlife. FMA is super deep no matter which one it is.

One could say a "sin" can be destroyed in two ways: either it becomes so great that it consumes itself, or if it meets its opposite, its antithesis. Embracing your nature to the extreme that it overwhelms you or rejecting and overcoming it - which one is a more noble death? As humans we'd obviously prefer the latter because we want homonculi to be like us, but things aren't that clear cut.
@RainbowWaffles
@RainbowWaffles Жыл бұрын
I dunno, many of these don't seem very related to their token sin. Gluttony (sort of) and pride yes, but the rest don't really strike me as irony. Not to say the 2003 homonculi weren't interesting, but just on this point in particular. Good example of the ironic deaths in Brotherhood would be that while Wrath died due to a fight, his final moments were arguably the most peaceful of any homonculus' - it's ironic because you'd expect his death to have been the most violent and angry. Self-sacrifice isn't really in line with or opposite of the concept of wrath, particularly.
@StarCharger28
@StarCharger28 Жыл бұрын
@@RainbowWaffles you’re playing checkers buddy. Wrath’s whole presence in COS was completely opposite of his dogma as a homunculus in the show. The same wrath that was going balls to the wall against the elrics was mellowed out and humble enough to be willing to become material for the reaction needed for Alphonse to open the gate for Ed’s sake. Even when gluttony was killing him when he was being chewed on, he admits it himself that he not only planned on his death but was able to resign himself to it. Something youd never expect a wrathful person to do. Ever. In the end, it still counts but you have to think about it a bit more. It was far deeper than the coincidence that’s on the surface of Brotherhood’s outcomes.
@Talisguy
@Talisguy 11 ай бұрын
@@RainbowWafflesThey're ironic in different ways. The 03 Homunculi aren't the personifications of Father's sins this time around, with their names being more like codenames. But, for example: Sloth, who desperately wanted to escape her past memories as the Elrics' mother, dies after Wrath, the child she essentially adopted out of spite, fuses himself to her. And Wrath's desire to be close to his mother figure is directly responsible for tearing him away from her. Very ironic, but it's ironic because of the Homunculi's goals and personalities rather than their sins this time.

I always thought Bradly kept his skull because he thought that was the safest place for it to be so his enemies must first go through him to get his only weakness, then I assumed he gave his son the key because he knew his enemies would not harm a child, and so should they raid the house while he's away the child could likely escape with his remains unharmed and if they raided while he was home they'd be unable to break into the safe because he's there killing them and the key is gone. I do think that his choices were driven by a sense of pride though, that even if every other child is only an annoyance his is superior as he was the one who raised it, so in his pride in his work and planning he expected his ward would be able to fulfill the simple role pride assigned him, this is why pride doesn't just boot him away but instead makes himself vulnerable as he snuffed out his one and only failure.
