@@GrosvnerMcaffrey - I agree with you 100%. I just watched "Die Another Day" a few days ago and really had fun with it. People can crap on that movie all they want, but at least Die Another Day is wildly entertaining at times, whereas No Time to Die is a bleak, dreary, downer of a movie that doesn't at all entertain me, but rather just makes me feel depressed inside.

From a storytelling perspective, Calvin kind of blew my mind talking about how the helicopter theft scene would have been written completely differently in Roger's day (with Bond not appearing, kind of like the submarine-napping scenes in TSWLM) and it makes me have even more respect for the already excellent screenwriting. It's brilliant.

Goldeneye is my all-time favourite Bond movie. I always say if aliens landed on Earth tomorrow and asked "What is Bond" I would show them the first 30-45 mins of Goldeneye (from the start up to the Tiger being nicked) and that would tell them everything they needed to know.

Great video. I’m surprised you guys said that you didn’t think the song connected to the film. I felt some of the lyrics were directly citing Brosnan - “you’ll never know how I watched you from the shadows as a child (his first film in a cinema was GF)/ “you’ll never know how it feels to get so close and be denied (losing the role in ‘86).

I'm a sucker for quick endings for characters and not these drawn out fights. The Xenia death for example is a good example of that, she came, kicked ass and then she's out! And you're just sitting there shocked like "Oh, damn, okey...". David mentioned the Safin death in NTTD, which I personally loved. It was quick, brutal, head turned away, multible bullets. There's some satisfactory on making it fast, more realistic and again, more brutal.

Excellent discussion as always! (Did not get notified it was live! KZfaq made a boo boo there!)😊 It’s funny - since Calvin did that Brosnan video it set me on a Brosnan Bond viewing binge as well! Now that the Craig saga has ended I think we have all just really grown a greater appreciation for what Brosnan brought to James Bond. I remember seeing that first trailer when he first strolled out - the crowd I saw it with were applauding and cheering! Very very rare that people do this for a trailer - but it just shows how much everyone missed the character and how happy they were that he was back. I was at the world premiere in radio city music hall here in NYC - and I’ll never forget that feeling of walking out and knowing James Bond really was back and alive again at the cinema. Hard as it is to believe- at that time there was real doubt whether or not that would happen. It was just CLASSIC James Bond. The girls - the gadgets - the action - the glamour - the villains - the spectacle - the stunts …. And Brosnan was at the heart of it all. Just perfect in the role - as we always knew he would be. He does not get enough credit for really bringing James Bond back to life and introducing him to an entire young generation. Because he definitely DID. And, of course, the film remains one of the very best in the entire series. Brilliant analysis- makes us love the film even more!

With Goldeneye, and I remember thinking this at the time, even as a teenager, they pitched the tone perfectly. It was as though they were winking ever so subtly at the audience, to say "yes, we know this is silly and fantastical", but didn't take it too far like some of the Roger ones, which were more like NUDGE NUDGE WINK WINK ARCH EYEBROW.

I feel GoldenEye is the Gen. X and Millennial generation's Goldfinger. There is a "play the hits" quality to it in following the Bond formula to the T, but there are plenty of new elements which make it a fresh and fun experience for the franchise. Its a really great debut Bond film for Pierce Brosnan.

The dream team!! Great vid as ever! I lived on N64 goldeneye (and nightfire) as a kid! Although I love it I also don’t watch it as much as some, reason for me is the overall visual darkness of the locations, the whole cold grey Russia vibe. Too dark and cold for too much of the film. I remember seeing it in the cinema which was amazing, specially the pts (where the skydive stunt got a few laughs). DB5 vs 355 in the hills above Monaco….probably my fave part!!

You guys are both great, love your videos. Goldeneye is Brosnan's best Bond film. At almost 70 I am of the Connery generation - older than David as he is to Calvin. So there is something that was the first thing I noticed about Goldeneye that no one ever mentions. OO7 has a blond haired partner, they are separated, the parter feels betrayed and returns as the villain... I know Napoleon Solo was a bargain basement Bond... but I always felt that at some point someone had an idea for a Man from UNCLE movie with Illya Kuryakin as the villain. Hey, it could happen, they made Mr. Phelps the bad guy in Mission Impossible after all. So someone had this UNCLE idea and then decided "No, that's too good, let's use it as a Bond movie." That may be a common idea that I've just never seen anyone mention, but it is what I think of every time I see Goldeneye.

I love these debates. My introduction to GoldenEye was as a fan born in the late 90s who loved Casino Royale and Skyfall so then worked from Dr. No onwards, so GE was probably one of the last Bond films I saw for the first time. Loved it ten years ago and love it now, although on my latest Bondathon, Tomorrow Never Dies overtook it to become my favourite Brosnan Bond film. Can’t wait until the next debate - Diamonds are Forever, perhaps?

Thanks David and Calvin you picked out everything that makes Goldeneye a classic Including the supporting cast and characters and how well they are introduced what they go through and how they end up. Its not just about Bond but with Brosnan you get what worked with Connery and Moore and what worked and didnt work with Timothy Dalton and Lazenby. Can't believe some fans don't like the beach scene maybe they weren't ready for Bonds failings as a human being to be exposed. Its whats keeps me alive.. no it's what keeps you alone. Thats said more about the character than anything that went before. You also nailed why we don't always watch the ones we rate highest the most fir me it's all about keeping them special by not overwatching. Im the same with Spy Who Loved Me and Goldfinger.

The song is weird (even for Bond) because of the line "You'll never know how I watched you from the shadows as a child," which strikes me as Bond getting addressed by a movie fan. Thank you, Calvin and David, for your love for Scorupco as Natalya. While we're talking about how cool it is to drink with your boss, can we talk about the informal efficiency of this? "I want you to find out what GoldenEye is, what they plan to do with it, and stop it." For those of us who are fed up with bureaucracy -- in other words, the human race -- this is pure bliss. I like Jack Wade because he's a full-on Yank, but a good Yank, not really the Sheriff Pepper that David worries about. (I would now like to take a moment to savor Xenia's breathless realization "He's going to derail us ... !") The way David feels about this reminds me of how I feel about the 2017 Wonder Woman, which I saw thirty times in the theater -- it's such a big rich experience that nowadays it's hard to sit down to all of it on a whim. Perhaps the answer is to find excuses use this as the movie with which to personally introduce others to Bond. Let's bring back Brosnan one more time!

What can I say about Goldeneye? I popped the proverbial cherry with that one, it was the first Bond film I ever saw, aged 6 or 7, and I never looked back. i just love pretty much everything about this film, and it's only very recently that I've started ranking it below the #1 spot, but it has never left the top 5 or nor will it ever, me thinks. I'd just like to say that this was once again a great video, Calvin and David, and thank you for pointing out that not only does Goldenye have one of, if not the best ensemble cast of any Bond film, but that each and every character's introduction is just pitch perfect. This is something that goes a long way in crafting a compelling film, and while Casino Royale also did it to perfection thanks to that Martin Campbell magic, other Craig films struggled in that regard (looking at you, Madeleine Swann and Franz Oblofedlhauser...) and never quite recovered from it.

Great video and talk as always! But I want to say: we can agree on the DB5 music scene that is awful, and the score replacement on the tank scene, but the rest of the Sierra score is awesome, is fully on point with the mood of the movie, from the gunbarrel (one of the bests ever) to the piano melody when 006 reveals himself as Janus and so ever.. crazy detail! the first time we see 006- Trevylian, he steps from the shadows and when he catches more light, the left side of his face is most noticeable. when Janus- Trevylian reveals himself to Bond, the right side of his face is most noticeable, which is the burned side, while he steps from light. that to me is a very cool little detail and nod to his name Janus, how Bond mentions; "the two faced Roman god".

This discussion only makes me love the film even more.. I had never thought about HOW much time they give Natalya before she meets Bond. As Calvin says, we've only ever seen this before with For Your Eyes Only. This is something which is missing from the Craig Bonds, where they played so heavily from Spectre onwards, on, "these are Bond women; not Bond girls!" Natalya has a job, a work colleague/friend, at some life before Bond.. Her value and existence doesn't pull into focus after meeting him. *I must add though, i'm a little surprised David didn't mention is so much detail the yacht door opening scene.. Which is something I have adopted in my day to day life, opening sliding doors like i'm Bond.

I liked the techno music. At the time, one of my favorite soundtracks was The Living Daylights because it was Bond with more modern style of music, and not just that but the music I was really into. But it was even better!! Because the upbeat techno music was backed up by a beautiful orchestra. I saw this with a group of newly made friends, out for the night, and I was on a semi date, kind of a group thing, but had the girl sitting with me and we were just getting to know each other. Made for an amazing time because that just added to the excitement of the night, and the new Bond movie. None of them knew what a Bond freak I was. Later that week we all went together again to see Toy Story in the theater. Amazing times for movies back then!! I did not wind up dating the girl, but it all made Goldeneye just that much more fun for me!

I honestly think Calvin has the most on-point appraisals of the franchise. + Agrees that _Tomorrow Never Dies_ isn't the best but is probably the most rewatchable film (or thereabouts) + Recognizes Martin Campbell's genius with _GoldenEye_ and _Casino Royale_ and playing to both Bond actors' strengths, not to mention wanting to be in the "right mindset" to appreciate them properly + Has come around to _Die Another Day_ as the fun romp it was intended to be + Dislikes _Thunderball_ and _Never Say Never Again_ as much as me + Has a soft spot for _Moonraker_

This film has the exotic Russian espionage feel shades of FRWL with the 90s early technology world of today this was Old Style Bond transitioning into the more tech Bond films of now and I know Bond has always been cutting edge technology wise but the newer films have tech we all use or experience in our lives

I remember being so hyped for this when I first saw the trailer. I tracked down the version of the Bond theme that was in it. I found the CD and bought it but I lost it lol. Does anybody remember who did that version? Was that Moby's version?

My favourite bond film: almost perfect, it's only a pity that the BMW Z3 had little screen time.

Goldeneye and Majesties are tied as my favorite Bond film. Trevelyan my favorite villian, really Bonds equal. Bond Trevelyan fight best since Bond and Red Grant. Onatopp tied with Odjobb as my favorite henchman. Loved Brosnan in this film. Pre title excellent. Turners theme song, one of my favorites, title sequence my favorite tile sequence. Brosnan is perfect in a tux, and his blue jacket on the manticore isvincredible. I loved General Orumov. He would be great main villian. Tank chase is great. My only slight nitpick is most of the score. The title song is a favorite , the tank chase scenes music is great.

I'm a huge fan of Goldeneye and Pierce Brosnan is amazing in his first Bond role, I feel he was just born to play the role. The pre titles has not just 1 amazing stunt but 2, the title song is brilliant and Tina Turner was right female singer to do it. The film as a whole tho is a 9.5 for me just brilliant.
