Extreme wealth and out of this world personal finance is everywhere on screen, from dramas like Succession and Big Little Lies to comedies like Arrested Development and Schitt's Creek to lighter fare like Gossip Girl. Audiences love movies and shows that give us a peek into how the other half (or, rather, 1%) lives. It can be a lot of fun to escape into these bougie worlds… and to watch these people who seem to have everything actually have to struggle every once in a while. But how true to life are these portrayals, really? And how do these narratives shape our perception of the wealthy - and ourselves - in real life? Let’s take a deeper look.

Friends explains how Monica affords the apartment. It is a rent-controlled apartment that is in Ross and Monica's grandmother's name. They are not paying market-value rent because of the rent control and the lease being in their grandmother's name.

My least favorite thing about these shows/movies is that the "poor" person trying to go up the ranks usually gets villainized and the wealthy are treated to make us empathize with them.

Maybe that's cz we are the audience - so we ideally feel vindicated in our lack of wealth while feeling somewhat superior in condemning the poor person who tried to join the wealthy class. It gives a sense of security in our way of life - instils a fear of wealth maybe. Just a guess.

@@littleraskle The whole point of Saltburn’s Oliver is that he is wealthy; he is upper-middle class. There are no working class people in Saltburn because they would never get in them. Saltburn is a portrayal of the desperate, social climbing middle class trying to destroy the upper class purely to become them.

@@littleraskle except tom ripley is still always sympathetic because rich ppl like dickie greenleaf are shown to be so callous and cruel, which is smth some shows forget to do with their villainous poor character. there's a sense that tom is leaning into his worst instincts when he tries to fit into the system, which encourages such toxic behavior.

The showrunners even said they DIDNT use some of the things theyve heard/read/told about, simply because they didnt think people would believe it! My wife made a good observation that these are basically messed up kids being handed keys for something they didnt really earn...yet their rash (or ego) decisions affect soooo much...crazy

Re: the rich trying to 'keep up appearances' after they've lost their wealth is perfectly illustrated in the first episode of Schitt's Creek, which then becomes a running joke: Moira's wigs/wig wall. Of course, it can be said that the family's general wardrobe is a sign of their trying to keep hold of some semblance of their former life. However, I feel like our introduction to Moira is her putting her wigs into suitcases, then wearing them constantly throughout the show, as well as the hilarious episode where she literally wont leave a burning building until she saves her 'bébés', aka her wigs 🤣🤣🤣 is such a wonderful illustration of fear of letting go of your former self. And yes, I know that Schitt's Creek is satire, and in many ways, the entire family does indeed shed their former ways, but I think keeping Moira's wigs was a very good choice indeed 😁

Whole of Titanic was based on the premise. Likewise, the phenomenon of dollar princesses. They did an episode on Chicago med where a woman was eating cat food so she could pretend to her friends that she wasn't having money issues and was buying nice things. I think this phenomenon is why politicians and the upper middle class are scared of giving economic concessions to the less fortunate- because they feel this need to live their lifestyle

The Roys don’t own any of the jets as this video suggests. The company owns or leases them. One of the storylines was that the Board of Directors was going to curtail the use of the private jets.

It’s often more tax efficient for the individual to own them or personally own a separate company that owns them (often based offshore) and lease them back to their companies…

@@KaiayaRules In the show, each family member owns a certain amount of stock. It’s a publicly traded company. A bunch of non family members also own a lot of stock. They never defined exactly how much stock everybody owns. But, they always seem to need support of others to gain control of the board. Up until the last episode, the combined family members controlled the company through their shares and support from others.

Just a note, folks making over 6 figures living paycheck to paycheck isn’t necessarily due to lifestyle creep. It can easily be due to inflation and especially for millennials and gen z the combination of student loans and the vast expense of owning your own home.

It depens on so many variables that I don't think that statement is true. I have met plenty of old money rich people who are kind, caring people. For sure there a lot of messed up rich people, but there are many messed up poor people too. It is not always about money. It is family, personalities , schooling, friend crowd etc. Saying "all rich people are messed up" is as ridiculous as saying "all poor people are kind and emotionally stable".

How are they comparing people who make "over $100,000 a year" with billionaires? As a result of the greed of the super rich, families that make just over $100,000/year are often very much living paycheck to paycheck - along with everyone making less who can't even survive.

The rich are just extorinists. People making $100,000 a year are also spending most of it to maintain their life styles instead of learning to live with less and spend less than they need to. Poor people ultimately pay more for everything as being poor costs more. Like the buying boots example: buying cheap boots that fall apart faster because they can't afford higher quality boots, but because they have to keep buying cheap boots over and over again, they end up spending more money long term compared to if they could buy the higher quality ones, from the start, that last longer and thus cost less over all. Even if $100,000 isn't a lot to those who have it, it's a lot to poor people. It's a number they may never reach in their lifetime. Yeah people can thrift, but that doesn't take away the fact that the conditions set out by capitalism are arbitrary and shouldn't exist. Period.

@@doingmythinghere9722 it was Phenomenology of the Spirit, esp. the section “Lordship and Bondage” there’s this really good channel that goes through the whole book section by section on here that I found really helpful (Half Hour Hegel) the only thing that helped me was that it’s a requirement for one of my courses so I was forced to actually sit down and try to get through Hegel in regular intervals.

Not the main focus of the video, but ppl keeps complaining about unrealistic apartments sizes on movies and series. That's because they can't fit all the cameras, crew and actors on a tiny one bedroom NYC apartment. So that's the reason most of poor ppl on tv lives in '' rented controlled apartments''. Yes, it takes a little bit of reality out of the picture, but it's better than bad footage.

poor wittle rich people :( won't someone pity them (I say that but I do honestly pity the children, like the actual under 18 children, being raised in these horrifically toxic at best, and often abusive environments. I can understand why they're so fucked up when they're adults, but they also have the money to get therapy and honestly unpack things, and instead choose to refuse to learn and grow...because they have money, so they don't have to.)

Better than growing up in destitute poverty anywhere else in the world. Where you can also just as well have an abusive household. Basically, toxic household environments are unavoidable in spite of any class situation. Always better to be rich though. These kids will always have all the support they need, materially at least. But I understand your point that it feels like a nightmare pretty often to be around elitist people all the time, esp of it's your parents/family

The mega rich in my community donate money to the local universities and have buildings named after them. They travel in groups with private security that take up several tables in restaurant.

My guess is that the donated money at the universities is in well invested endowments but a building at a small university probably doesn’t stack up to a building at an Ivy League school. So are the rich people in my area really that rich I dunno

I will never be uber wealthy and that is fine. I couldn't give 2 shits about "keeping up with the Jones". There are a lot of horror/thriller/dark comedy shows and movies that have also covered this topic, like Ready of Not and Knives Out. They both have wealthy families that will go to extremes to keep their wealth, as well as "everywoman" audience surrogates. I'm especially surprised that The Fall of the House of Usher wasn't featured. That is a prime example of a stupidly wealthy family empire full of shitty people, but they are extremely entertaining. Shit goes south fast and I really enjoyed meeting those awful family members (and their awesome spouses/partners), seeing how they got to where they were, the lengths they went to keep it, and ultimately, how it all came crashing down.

I must say I am bit disappointed with this episode. This felt more like a summary of succession than an actual analysis of wealth on TV. You start by posing the question, "How true to life are these portrayals, really? And how do these narratives shape our perception of the wealthy?" & all you really do is walk us through the most common tropes. The section "ultra rich lifestyle on screen vs television" only points out that really wealthy people tend to keep their luxury quiet - something anyone who opened Instagram or TikTok in the past 12 months could have told you as well. This did not seem en par with your usual content. I feel like you could have gotten a lot more in depth here.

The Roy family planes are worth way more than $50M in total. They are each worth that amount or more. Those long haul jets in particulary cost well over $50M. I’m excluding the BBJs they fly to Europe which are modified Boeing 737s.

I feel like the most realistic billionaires are the VIPs from Squid Game and Isherwell from Don't Look Up. They're totally removed from reality and, most importantly, think they're a lot smarter and cleverer than they actually are. A year not a month. If you were making that much a month your wealth would likely be in the 7-8 digits. As for making 100k a year though and living paycheck to paycheck, its not strange or even due to expensive lifestyles. I am not living paycheck to paycheck but making that much in one of the most expensive states in the USA, i can tell you its hard to save a lot. You can easily end up broke if youre not minding every dollar, constantly.

forget movie and tv depictions. social media will make you feel like 10x more people are living the 1% lifestyle. I realise the more one flaunts their wealth, is usually when that person is feeling things are going downhill, and that the flaunting is to help cope with the drop in self confidence. I had a friend who would regularly buy up the most expensive sports watches. His collection is worth 7 figures. One day I see in the news that his family is declaring bankruptcy, and the guy has no longer made a single post on social media again.

I saw a breakdown somewhere but let's put it this way: The most expensive hotel room in the world is the Empathy Suite at the Palms Casino Resort, at $100,000 a night. If you had a billion dollars, you'd have to stay in that suite for 100 consecutive days to feel like you've spent a penny.

Well, you dont get rich by being a good person, generally. You get rich by lying, cheating and exploiting the rules and the people. So if youre talking about 'self-made millionaires' then they honestly can all get bent. If youre talking about old money then how can you hold on to millions or billions when there is such suffering in the world? They are propping up the very system (capitalism) that is destroying the working class and the planet. So while they might not be movie villain eviu they are at least apathetic which is still shitty

Religion has been used to commit millions of horrific crimes and cruelties and if god existed you have to agree that he either doesnt *know* it happens or cant stop i (which would make him not omnipresent/omnipotent) or he knows it happens and could stop it but won't (which would make him not all benevolent) or both. This is really aburd! No sane person will believe, that tv shows and movies portrey ultra rich in a precise way. Yes, a lot of super rich will have terrible personality, but also many many common people have terrible personality as well, so an attemp to attack wealthy group of people is nonsense and pointless. There is only one and the only reason, why anybody would atttack ultra rich and the reason is ENVY. Most people can´t grasp the idea, that only so few people are so good with money and know, how to get at the top. Well, it is the common person problem, that he or she is not good with money and is dumb, no one else´s. No wonder, that 1% of super rich can´t spend their time with common people and must be isolated. Because if not, common people would try to destroy their success and lifes. And why? Again, because most common people are super dumb and envy, thinking, that life is not fair to them. Well, it is fair! Peole are dumb and don´t do antyhing to improve their life, so they must stay ordinary. Anything difficult to understand about it? It is not, it is very simple and fair. It is the natural law of our planet. And other thing is that showing envy to someone has no dignity and at that very moment you became an ultimate looser proving this idea, that common people are indeed super dumb and vain.

And what about those born into wealth? They absolutely did NOTHING to acquire that position. Pure luck. And there are people born into wealth who actually think they achieved something by being born. Most people don't hate the wealthy. But a lot of people hate people who use their wealth (or wealthy status) to mock or be cruel to those who are NOT wealthy

I love rich people. They don’t have a scarcity mindset. They don’t think in lack. They live in abundance! They operate on a frequency so they can live out their dreams. I feel it’s a jealousy thing. Wealthy doesn't equal intelligence. A LOT of people are born into wealth. A LOT of wealthy people are born on third and act like they hit a triple. People are people. Wealthy assholes are just as horrible as poor assholes
