Thanks for the video and the hard work you and your team put in. I've been a follower for ages and did my first lens mod after watching you do it, been quite a journey there. Love that attitude of appreciating things for what they are and whether they are suitable for the project, instead of judging by the labels that have been slapped on top of them. It's a huge topic, but honestly these days it feels like marketing and consumerism distract people from understanding why they use certain tools, and many people buy things without understanding why or understanding if there's a need for it.

Thanks for the shoutout Tito! I wholeheartedly agree. Once you've seen footage shot on an anamorphic projection lens looking incredible on the biggest ad screen in Europe... It really ends the quality question!

Some good remarks, but mostly… it felt a little bit snobby by « lecturing » him so much while he clearly isn’t into anamorphic since years but still makes very good points from the very beginning (like it is fine and nice of you to explain why the squeeze factor changes with focus, but doesn’t make it less of a pain to guess/correct in post unless you only focus through diopters)

It's not so much that potato jet was incorrect on alot of points, it's that he always talks like he is absolutely correct on everything he says. For me, PJ has a slight troll quality in his reviews. The way he man handles expensive gear is highly irritating. The most amazing camera can come out and PJ will most likely throw up a video saying why he will never buy it. It was so satisfying to see a calm, educated clap back video. SUBBED!

And there's nothing wrong with what Gene said, but Tito went deeper obviously, what our friend PotatoJet wanted was a light review on his channel talking as open as possible, and he did which is why I think he is a great person and a fun with lots of informational bits channel. Again, the expert here will be Tito.

The squeeze issue - instead of adjusting the width, just stretch the height a tad. Lose a little of the top and bottom and you will maintain the width,.just remember to keep enough headroom.

I had no idea about anamorphics. I was looking for a lens and saw an ad of a vintage "anamorphic lens". I was like "what the heck is an anamorphic?" This was about a year ago. Then I watched your video about anamorphic lenses. I decided to get one. Sirui had a 50mm out at that time. I wanted to get it but wasnt sure about the focal length. Then came out the 35mm. Still I couldn't convince myself to get one. But the anamorhic look, the blue horizontal lines were like sirens. Now I have the 24mm and it seems like I don't have enough. Thanks .

Hi Tito & Potato Jet, just a quick update: in the meanwhile I purchased the lens, experimenting with it on my Lumix S1H since a few weeks. This lens exceeded my expectations by far: built like a tank, perfect smoothness of both focus and apperture, razor sharp from edge to edge, nice flares when light hits the lens directly from the front, on the other side quite robust against unwanted flaring (I did not expect this!). Yes, there is some little squeeze-breathing when focusing - but not too wild and a result of the selected construction and not Sirui's fault. Only challenge I still have with this lens is finding the perfect focus w/o using the internal EVF of my S1H, i.e. in run & gun mode. So, I am practicing and practicing and getting better every day. Another thing I was totally unaware of is that when using the 5.4 K mode on my S1H, this lens with its 1.6 squeeze factor turns my S1H into an 8,64 K monster! Yes, the additional resolution gets created by the NLE (in my case Davinci Resolve Studio) when interpolating additional pixels during horizontal desqueeze - but it all looks so great and immersive. When I recently used my spherical lens and reviewed the footage on my screen I felt like watching an 'amputated' piece of video. Guess what, this is my 'always on lens' for the time being. Thanks to Tito for bringing 'The Anamorphic' to so many of us!

To be honest, I enjoyed this video, and as a guy interested in cinematography and planning to invest in Sirui glasses, it was very informative. Hats off to you, from a brother you'll never meet.

Don’t forget Terrence Wilkins wonderful work with his Cinelux. But hey I’m glad Mr. Potato finds the adapters not to his liking, and his subscribers will stop driving the prices up for us true aficionados.

I am a highly experienced photographer and have yet to meet a lens - any lens at all, that I did not like. But I do like choosing the right lens for the job. That is where the experience comes in. Mister Potato needs to apply himself more succinctly in terms of critical review of technical attributes he does not yet quite understand.

I have seen that squeeze factor change effect in classic cinemascope film during a shot with extreme focus pull. At the time I attributed it to the cinemascope lens, but wasn't sure exactly what I was seeing. There was one notable example, but it was long ago and I can't recall what film it was.

Can u suggest some diopters for medium and close up shots using the 50,35,24 mm sirui anamorphic lenses . I don't want to worry about figuring out what to change the desqueez setting to get the proper look.

Very good analysis. When you consider that the first ever Cinemascope feature, "The Robe" (1953) was shot with a single Bosch and Lomb lens, all of the above discourse, is purely Academic, as interesting as it is 👍

my 2 cents: potato jet is a legit content creator, really funny dude, and has become super knowledgeable on general industry tech. his following completely warrants this kind of response so good on you for defending the lenses. THAT SAID, any real story teller with a true affinity for cinematic story telling would never complain about any of what potato jet had a problem with. youtubers in general tend to over analyze out of a need to make extensive content. and while their opinions absolutely matter, they should NEVER solely guide a true filmmakers decision. I.e. dismissing the adapters over extra time in post... when working on a budget you will always have to work extra in post on one thing or another. its a trade off so if you like the look of those anamorphic adapters, maybe the 5 seconds per clip in post is worth it. We live in such an amazing time for story tellers right now where we can buy everything we need to make a career defining feature film for under 10k but you'd never guess it if you only paid attention to youtubers who's entire jobs are to push the limits of tech designed to compete with equipment 10x more expensive. (bmpcc vs alexa videos crack me up) sorry this was so long winded but for me, the creators of affordable groundbreaking tech do far more for the creative space than any one person's opinion of their products. creators like Potato Jet are fantastic but let's not give them more power than they deserve.

It's best to remain humble, thankful, encouraging and enthusiastic about our craft and art. Anamorphics have been a niche within a niche for so long: it's nice to see the availability of the various flavors to a wider group of film makers. Thanks for such great info as usual. And thanks for making me realize my Panasonic has that cool advantage of stabilization with anamorphic. Why is it that Panasonic can stabilize the anamorphic - Does it have to be done the anamorphic mode that accompany’s some of their cameras??

Anamorphic is definitely not for everyone. If someone doesn't like it, there's plenty to criticize. Generally thoguh, the image issues some dislike, are the vary aspects fans love. Including high expense, cumbersomeness ect. Some people enjoy the challenge and the problem solving.

I don't think potato was dissing anamorphic so much as expressing his personal preference. He's allowed to have his opinions. Tito does a great job on the deep-dive in this response, I didn't think he was dunking on potato so much as explaining why anamorphic lenses are just... different!

I am new to anamorphic. Do the Sirui anamorphic lenses work best on a micro four thirds sensor, or on an APS-C sensor....? Or are they just different with field of view, due to the difference between the sensor size between 4/3rds and APS_C? I do like the anamorphic look, and trying to decide between the two systems of either micro four thirds, or an APS-C type camera.

I bought a SonyA7 and looking to buy my first lens , it’s mainly just to shoot movies, which lens do you recommend I buy first , I really like the price of the 24mm sirui, but like the flexibility of DZO 20-55 but I love the look of anamorphic, and Sony being full frame I’ve come to learn probably wasn’t the camera I should have bought?

Would it be effective to put a big circle on a slate so that you have a reference to calibrate the squeeze amount if you're sitting on an extreme for the lens's focal range?

Tito, could you expand more on the IBIS stuff? I would love to use these anamorphics on mid-level car videos. The cars are usually ferrari or lamborghini street cars and clients prefer to have a polished look, so IBIS would really help me out. I have an A7SIII. what do I set it to? it’s focal lengths or 1.33 lower?

One correction when you state Panasonic is the only manufacture with stabilization for anamorphic. - the canon c70 does this too - there is actually a menu option for anamorphic image stabilization although it is electronic stabilization and not true IBIS

I have the 50mm & 35mm Sirui Anamorphic lenses, I'm not complaining.

I've always maintained that Potato Jet rushes his videos, which is understandable because he needs to get a lot of videos out weekly, but that results to some of his videos just being very poor representations of the product he is showcasing. Gh5 can work anamorphic mode in differemnt codecs ,right ; So other models of panasonic ; So we have 'light chase' around scenes..and a lot of reframing during directions accord to the plan of each project..and 'restrictions' -kind of not so close or too far of the main subject so it cannot disform it- of budget anamorphic lenses we can have or borrow for the shooting.. What is the simplest solution that has more work in post; Is the Panasonic mirrorless a solution close to the result of budget anamorphic lenses or each choice gives a different perpective and aesthetic; Nice job and greetings from Greece..

Long time follower here looking for an answer. I got the Sirui anamorphic lens via indie gogo with the canon r mount. I can't seem to find a canon r to Leica L adapter. What would you advise. I'm trying to use this on the sigma FP. Is there a possible combination of adapters ?

Ok I know it's about the look you want but are the vazen easier to focus than the sirui ? I want to get the 32mm vazen anamorphic but Will I have a harder time getting the image I want than the 40mm vazen or 65mm ? You mentioned something about close up anamorphics not delivering as good a image as and the longer lengths ?

It really bothers me when people talk about ‘faking the anamorphic look’ and are connoting to the flares. The ‘anamorphic look’ is the field of view you get from a cylindrical lens versus a spherical lens. That’s the look, the flares are simply a byproduct.

He has the best way of testing this lens right behind him: The circular poster on the wall! Shoot this in the centre of the frame then the edges a measure if the horizontal compression is different!

Another amazing video, hope you dont mind this random comment but why have you never tried out the SLR magic 2x anamorphic lenses. Especially the ones for Micro Four Thirds are pretty interesting and easy to use. Not quite as budget as these Sirui lenses but if you rent them they're only a couple hundred bucks. Shot a few shorts and a feature on them! Any thoughts?

Is saying that these lenses would be fine for a professional wedding shoot an over simplification? While it is easy to imagine some of the amazing shots they could produce it is hard to imagine the bride groom, wedding party or guests etc being enthusiastic about overly rounded faces in close up shots. This is just not the type of compromise people accept lightly. For the video producer to correct for all of this in the editing process would require quite a bit of work and without a reference picture how would one calculate the correct amount of desqueeze? Perhaps a video dedicated to this topic would be in order. You could demonstrate a work flow for a real life project and demonstrate how people might best manage this problem from the selection of the best lens down to the editing process. I assume that if you use a lower desqueeze factor you then have to crop the video to produce a consistent aspect ratio etc. Potato Jet has indeed pointed out a very real issue here. As someone who owns Sirui lenses I am sure it something we can work around but your expertise could speed that process along.
