Featured here is an excellent attacking rapid chess game between Viswanathan Anand and Alexey Shirov from the 2000 Fujitsu Siemens Giants. In response to Shirov's French Defense, Anand chooses the Steinitz variation with the underdeveloping 5. Nce2 to maintain a full pawn center. The presence of Anand's d4 pawn is primarily felt by Shirov's knight on d7. Interestingly enough, once Shirov's knight arrives on d7, it never moves again.

Loved the game Jerry. All these "obscure" games you find are interesting to me. I dunno what it is, like it's not some Tal esque super sac game but they are just interesting in some unique way hehe Interesting how Anands "quiet" Ne2 led to a crushing kingside attack. And not just kingside attack, but he also managed to crush all counterplay on the Queen side and in the center. Anand really crushed Shirov completely here. As a French player myself(from time to time), I felt this one. It's one of those games that goes completely wrong where you have zero counterplay and no breaks, and white just builds up his pieces and attack while you have nothing and can only wait until he sacs into a crushing attack. It's completely demoralizing. Lol. Shirov probably never played this opening or variation ever again after this

Beatiful game! I miss games like these in today's chess. Bringing in the black square bishop was amazing.

Maybe we'd have more of them if entry to the Candidates came from coming in first in enough other tournaments so that top players would be incentivized to play for wins

Both b5 pawn sacrifices just to avoid the queenside opening up in black's favor were very instructive

Incredible game! I have to say, as good as the game is, it might be entirely useless without your calm and focused analysis. Thank you Jerry once again, you are a master of chess and a master of teaching.

Interesting game,... May be someone can help me (analysis), in position after black move : 1. ... c5xd4 2. c3xd4 f6xe5 3. f4xe5 Nd7xe5 4. d4xe5 (in video minute 5:14), suppose black continued with 4. ... Nc6xe5, what white best response ? (because if white reply with 5.Nf3xe5, then black can give check Qb6-f2+)

I don't think black has a follow up after the check so white cam just take back

On the other hand, you'd be able to stop pawn capture, and then push the knight back with b5..
