Showing how a single event tune starts and runs in the cold and just driving around town. The sound quality on the iPhone doesn't pick it up that good but it sounds literally like an old 6BT 12 valve.
The truck is a 2012 6.7L Cummins, G-56 trans with Southbend DD3600 clutch, deleted with H&S Minimaxx, Sinister EGR delete, AFE manifold, 5" Flo~Pro turbo back exhaust.

It's recommended to leave the exhaust brake on all the time. It only engages when you let off the throttle with it in gear anyways. Helps clear the Vgt veins out so they don't lock up

+Corey Davis I've driven both the autos and manuals and the automatic EB is not as strong as the manual EB, plus always letting off to shift or coast, it gets pretty annoying with the brake on. To prevent sticking you can leave the brake on at idle and it will cycle it. Works especially good in the cold for warm-up.

sayguywtfisjuice I've had considerable seat time in all 3 and even had the chance to tow with the AS69RC (Aisin) transmission. The Aisin I find will disengage the brake at 1400 or so RPM, it is considerably better than on a 68RFE, but still not as good as the G-56. I do like however that on both the G-56 and AS69RC you have the option of full and auto exhaust brake for the 2015 model year. After driving them it all boils down to personal preference. Though I'm impressed with the Aisin I'd still buy a G-56 if I was in the market for a new truck.

the white smoke is from incomplete combustion cause engine is cold, its normal. now if it white smokes at operating temp then you have either injector issue or coolant getting in combustion chamber or timing issues

Thats the thing with custom tuning its its all one big learning curve for both parties. Me being on the receiving end I get to see all of this stuff first hand and relay it back to the tuner. Also gives me a chance to learn about what these trucks like and don't like. One big thing I learned is that a full single event tune doesn't like cold starts, they make a whole mess of white smoke and misfire, hence where the pilot event was added for when ECT is too low to support adequate combustion. Once the tune was figured out all the issues I had previously where resolved.

How do you like that shift knob? Does it get hard to grip in 5th or 6th?

erk409 no issues. Gets pretty cold in the winter so i put the stock ball back on

Hey man I have EFI Live on my 2014 and had my tuner make me a single event tune (12v). Does the sound of the 12 valve come and go until your truck is up to operating temp? Mine doesn't sound like a 12 valve until my ect hits about 160.

+Adam Midriff Mine phases out the pilot injection slowly, so if its very cold it will still run the pilot event, this helps with warm-up and with starting. Even though its still using the pilot event, its greatly reduced so it still resembles a 12 valve even when starting in the winter. at 104F ECT my pilot is completely removed.

So what situation causes the white smoke? I have the same truck, deleted and I get white smoke for first couple miles everyday now. Coolant isn't low and not burning oil.

Michael Blaylock the white smoke in my case was incomplete combustion due to cold cylinders in the winter on cold starts. If it was cold enough outside the truck would miss and idle rough. All symptoms where completely gone when the pilot event was added for warm-up.

Michael Blaylock I'll also add that sometimes a custom tune even with pilot injection on won't load the manual equipped trucks enough to properly warm up so there will be smoke at idle even on a brand new deleted truck, though this is more apparent on 13+ trucks. A friend of mine has a 2015 and had smoke on start-up, he had to get a tune that runs the exhaust brake on start up. Whenever his truck is at idle the brake is on, cleared up his smokey starts.

Shaun Viinikka Wow ! Thanks for the speedy reply, mine is actually a 2014 g56 running efi live. No one else seems to know much on the subject. Everyone says it has to be coolant but I can't find any evidence of that. I haven't had studs out in yet but I keep it on stock tune and drive it conservatively.

Good thing you have EFI-Live on it. Its a lot better for these trucks than the Bully-Dog used to unlock them. Cold weather starts weren't refined enough on the newer trucks and pulse the exhaust brake. From what I hear from tuners out here the the white smoke on start up is a pretty common thing and various tuners are working to fix it though it doesn't seem to plague the 10-12 trucks. I strongly recommend the studs, they are very good preventive maintenance. I too keep my truck on lower power levels and I'm also studded and still managed to blow my head gasket. white smoke on start up isn't a head gasket issue. I'n my case I was pushing coolant back through the reservoir and had really bad coolant temperature fluctuations as well as no interior heat. It's been fixed and I got the head o-ringed to further prevent it from happening again.

@@crvic9382 only issue I had was head gasket failure (I wasn't studded until way later, and a water pump failure but that's a warranty issue on the 13+)

Do you think the 12V tune caused the head gasket issue? I wonder what cylinder pressures are doing with the single event. I know it’s gotta be easier on the injectors. Just curious

+Philthy mcnasty As far as shifting actually goes, your probably not going to shift faster with it, the knob sits higher so you have a longer throw, but I like how the pistol grip feels. Its also aluminum so it doesn't weight much more than the stock shifter does. All in all, I like it and would buy it again if I found myself into a new truck.

It makes a tiny tiny amount of difference to wear, it's hardly "so bad". You should have both hands on the wheel but everyone is guilty of ignoring that advice.

So glad this is the first comment in the feed, I was going to write that. It's all I could think when I saw the driving portion. Perfect way to cause premature wear. The tune is pretty interesting. Sounds good.

Id you really believe that you resting your hand on the shifter is going to cause premature wear in a gearbox that's being made to convert hundreds of foot pounds of torque into tens of thousands, over tens of thousands of miles without service, you're crazy.

fluffykittynoodles it is in fact bad for the transmission. Doesn't matter how much torque it's made to handle if you don't use it right. Maybe you keyboard mechanics should use Google before telling someone else that their wrong
