Hitchcock would have been proud. Anatomy of a Fall is a four-time Oscar-nominated film that won the Cannes Palm d'Or 2023. It is my favorite film of the season. This movie's editing might be better than Barbie, Killers Of The Flower Moon and perhaps even Oppenheimer.

Very engaging (raw) performances. In an interview, the editor said the director would require to always pick the strongest performance shots in isolation, and build from that, no matter what - instead of building a scene with what might feel right. Something that stood out to me was a strong zooming on the judge in one shot. We don’t see much aggressive zooming in modern cinema: it seems to be frowned upon.

I think the Zoom on the house when they were re-enacting the fall, while she went for a walk, was remarkable aswell

The camera freezes during the outburst and when waiting for the husband's reaction just like how some react after a gigantic shock. I really hope you can consider making a video about Burning (2018), because it is up there with this movie.

I'll revisit this movie in Premiere Pro to see all the things you've pointed out. Right now I'm busy using this method on Killers of the Flower Moon. As you can understand, that's taking a while. But Anatomy has stuck with me so I'll be interested in going back to it.

How is it that you can review a film such as this one in Premiere Pro so as to study the editing etc?

I think this was one of the best films of 2023. Performances were astonishingly good, all of them. The wife, the husband, the kid, even the dog!

Fantastic analysis Sven! Anatomy of a Fall was easily one of my favorite films from last year as well. Would love to see you breakdown the first scene in The Ship from Poor Things, the one where Bella and Duncan meet Harry and Martha. It'd also be fantastic if you can breakdown the Hitler studies scene in White Noise.

I will give it a watch, thanks. I think what you call "pure cinema" is actually just proper filmmaking. From the sequences you showed, it has too many mid-to-MCU-to-tigther shots which I think is a sickness of cinema for the past 40 years. It's a good general bias for television, wrong for the cinema. Using handheld to express something has also been far too overused and doesn't have the impact or convey the emotion as it once did.

I did. At a movie theather. Haven't felt such emotional weight on my chest on the way out in a long time. Spoke a lot to me about sharing a life with a partner. And yeah, the spotlight on the fight scene is well-deserved. (After seeing the movie, I am not so sure if one should see it here beforehand, to me it's one of the most essential sequences of the entire film, feels like a spoiler). Anyway, as an editor myself, I couldn't help noticing they cut back to the court right before it revealed "too much", keeping the ambiguous atmosphere untouched. Fantastic, yet subtle choice.

There's never truly a definitive "best-edited movie of the year" when all the nominees were brilliantly edited. After seeing Anatomy of a Fall, I'm happy Oppenheimer won but this film is brilliant on every level and definitely should've been seen more.

Why do you keep changing your thumbnail and title ? I know you're not the only one to do so, but I usually unsubscribe from these channels, as it feels clickbaity and desperate for attention. Is there a logical explanation for this practice ?

We are running continuous a/b testing to optimize a video's performance. It can take several days before a video can strike the right balance between click through rate, watch time, and viewer watch experience. If one of those elements falls short, KZfaq will stop sharing the video.

I don't know what I didn't understand about this film but for me it was a real pain to follow it to the end. The procedural part above all never grabbed me and I got to the end cursing for it to end as soon as possible. I think Hitchcock is really called into question in a very forced way in this case. I like all Hitchcock's films, even the silent ones, but the only one I've never liked is Rebecca. I don't know, maybe it could be a curious coincidence. For me this year has been particularly negative, cinematically speaking. Both this film and Hoppenheimer (whose analysis I saw with great satisfaction on this channel) I didn't like very much. I'm not saying they're bad films, but they're films where I don't give a damn about what happens to the characters. Perhaps the only good film I saw was The Holdovers, although I understand that it could be a classic style film. Maybe I just don't like this new avant-garde.

@DrRussell I typically hate montage sequences, but Oppenheimer somehow tells a majority of its story through montage sequences, while throwing a large amount of information at you both through dialogue over these sequences and shots that last as short as a breath, all the while being instantly comprehensible. That is just one thing I'm fascinated by with the editing, but I'm also someone who just watched movies. It might not be as impressive as I think it is

I really don't give a flying crap about whatever this video have to say after seeing that thumbnail. I understand that creators have to play by the algorithm rules from time to time, but chose go to this extreme or be taken seriously. You can't have both.
