***BLIND NEWBIE HERE!*** I'm raising and waiving my hand---HELLO! Hello, so nice to 'meet' you! Hi. I am Molly. I just got my first handpan last week, and I finally have time to sit down with it. I am watching a few videos first, because I know nothing about this beautiful thing I now own. I am not musically inclined, nor have I ever played a musical instrument, other than running my mouth, comically known here in the deep south in America as "running my gator." I can holler and whistle, that's about it. Now at 55, I have just lost my mother, 3 days before Christmas. I am blind, and now I am all alone. (I lived with her, no siblings, father died when I was young). I need something to help me, to help me grieve, meditate, live in the moment, feel connected, just something to occupy my mind and hands. I am subscribing to you. Your video got quite technical at the end, for a newbie like me, but that is ok. I am NEW HERE! After I watch it a dozen more times, the parts about the note fields and strike zones will make more sense. I am fearful when I know you will start teaching about the actual NOTES each tone, (or was it note?) field can play! And then I understand that the dimples are also numbered somehow? As I blind person, I have to figure out a way to understand and remember this info! I obviously cannot read music, because I cannot see it. I don't want to get all technical. I want to learn how to use my hands the proper way, and where each sound is. I want to learn proper striking methods, but how will I be able to see someone/anyone teach me this? I need a video for is "blind-friendly." (I do have a LITTLE bit of eyesight, but trust me, it's not much). Life is more challenging for me. But I believe that once I memorize the sounds each dimple makes, I can start putting together my own harmonies, I guess.... I am going to give it my all. Do you have any other students who are blind?? Do you play more by muscle memory? Or visually? Or both? As a beginner, do you recommend we number our dimples somehow? (Could I use, say, a wide Sharpie, and put a big 1, 2, 3, etc, in each dimple? Or would that change the sound? As a newbie, I can't imagine it would change the sound enough that my untrained ears would pick up on. Thoughts??? Thank you so much. Sorry this was so long!

As you would hit on top in the middle of an apex ding. Would it be harming the handpan to hit inside the dimple in the inpex ding?

not at all, as long as your strike is reasonably precise and not overly aggressive, just like any other note.

What I did was watch videos on the handpan, and then I experimented and learned the different tones and the order. From there, i just did combinations of what I picked up and get lost in it. Pick what sound order works for you. I'm no pro, but I do get fortunate sometimes when I'm playing outside and people stop to listen or record. That's how you know you're on the right track( at least, in my opinion). Just have fun and roll with it 😏👍

I just received an order from Amazon as a gift, and the handpan smoothness looks somewhat rough. The sounds seem ok, but do not last long. I am new to the instrument. Is it normal that it came in with a semi-oily surface? And the places on the seeming brand-new handpan look dirty. I tried wiping lightly, and am questioning if there was rust underneath and someone tried to spray-paint. I flip the pan, and inside I see rust-like traces (dust), and smell something like glue. The dirty places are around the lower part of the pan, and they do not seem to go away upon gentle wiping (I don’t want to force-rub). should the handpans be expected to carry rust from the get-go? it’s a gift, but I am leaning toward informing the gifter to see if we can return it

It‘s all good. Got the same one. It’s just poor quality due to the price of 200 bucks. It should always be a bit greasy and the markings and smell etc is just because it costs a 10th of the actual price. But still a great beginner model and a way to test it you want to invest 2k - 8k for a decent model.

I am new to the world of handpans and have nobody who i can ask so please dont laugh at my question but why is it that the center note has often that strange metallic sound like when you hit a deep steel pot (which is not a musical instrument) randomly? To my ears its totally off because the other side notes sound beautiful- LIke that center note does not belong there at all and its disturbing the beautiful sound of handpan... But then sometimes i hear somebody playing handpan and the side notes sound a little bit same as metallic noise too (in the background of the beautiful tone) then i start wondering wether it is an indication of quality of handpan or the hitting technique or its just natural. Could you explain it to me? thank you
@zsoltibitter8761
@zsoltibitter8761 Жыл бұрын
After a bit of research i have found maybe its called "backbeat"? when you dont hit the tone field but next to it. Looks like a subjective preference because my ears really perceive it as disturbing noise which ruins the melodic sound of handpan (My friend told the same (we both dont know anything about handpans)) but i have realized its natural and a lot of musicians love it.
@Handpan360
@Handpan360 Жыл бұрын
Good question, thanks for asking. Im not sure exactly what sound you're referring to, if you send me a video link and time stamp I can answer more completely. But what I think you may be talking about is sound coming from the shoulder tones of the center tone or interstitial of the pan. They can be quite high and not always in tune with the handpan. playing off the dimple of the center tone and on the tone field can make this more pronounced. I personally rarely play the tone field of the center tone unless doing a harmonic bend or isolation. Definitely the quality of the instrument makes a HUGE difference here. And yes, you are correct, also the precision and skill of the player. As a side note....why is a deep steel pot not an instrument? It is one of my absolute favorites! its actually how I first got into singing steel music
