Go to / medicosis The lymph node is a bean-shaped body (not a gland) that interrupts the flow of lymph through the lymphatic vessels.
Afferent lymphatics go towards the lymph node, while efferent exits the node. The lymph node has cortex (which contains the follicle, germinal center, mantle, and margin).
Lymphocyte activation and differentiation occur in the lymph node.
Lymph is a colorless fluid that floats in the lymphatic vessels (lymphatics) of your lymphatic systems.
Formed from the interstitial fluid (extracellular fluid) and returns back to the big veins (Superior vena cava) through the thoracic duct and Right lymphatic duct.
Lymph slows down when it passes in lymph nodes.
Lacteals are a special type of lymph, they are milky because they contain chylomicrons.
Lymph node enlargement can happen in cases of lymphoma (painless lymphadenopathy) or infection (painful).

Would you be able to show what the body does, to lymph fluid AFTER nodes are removed (i.e. the armpit)? I know the affected arm develops lymphedema, but does that 'stagnant' lymph fluid eventually moves to other areas of the body & develop another cancer ? Thanks for your concern.

First, I need to say, this is great. Secondly, I have a Q. about 02:16 where you say that because flow through lymph nodes is slow, cells that metastasise from primary tumours can cause lymphoma. Do you mean to say that metastatic cells from any tissue will cause lymphoma? I thought lymphoma was specific to cancer of lymphocytes? All the best from King's College London Medical School :)
@MedicosisPerfectionalis
@MedicosisPerfectionalis 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Ali, Good question, bro! There is a difference between lymphoma, and a metastasis to the lymph node. A lymphoma is a primary malignant tumor that originates inside the lymph node itself. A metastasis to lymph node is any cancer (especially a carcinoma) that originates in another organ, and later metastasize to the lymph node (i.e. secondary malignant tumor). Does that make sense?

How does the body process lymph fluid when the lymph node(s) are removed?
@MedicosisPerfectionalis
@MedicosisPerfectionalis 3 жыл бұрын
The lymphatic vessels will drain into the next group of lymph nodes, or into veins.

XD still a very good video after 5 years! you are a great teacher! Thank you for this. also, a question i wanna ask. why to tell a biopsy of a Lymph node we dont use FNA? theres no answers yet... hmm, maybe i should research more. but any answers is appreciated, and thanks!

It can work, but a core-needle obtains a bigger sample and a greater likelihood of detecting abnormalities if present. But of course, everything involves trade-offs.

A way that helps me remember the direction of afferent and efferent vessels is by thinking of it as such: AFFerent (vessels/ nerves) would carry the message (fluid/impulses) from the AFFected part > to the organ & EFFerent would carry the message from the organ > to the part to bring about the EFFect Hence Afferent carrying towards and Efferent carrying away Hope this can help someone ^_^

Question: Why should we not perform an FNA on the LN?

You can, but core needle biopsy will probably yield better results (less false negative).

I have 14 lymph nodes that are enlarged. For some reason they just keep popping up. I have one under my right arm that’s as big as 3 quarters put together and very thick. I had a ultrasound on it bc it keeps growing it came back abnormal so I’ll be seeing a hematologist in May. I recently found two in my ankles🤔 I’ve honestly never heard of them being there. Has anyone had any experience with this? My blood count is stable so I don’t think it’s Hodgkins they are also painless
