Great explanation! Been shooting for 35 or so years. Mix of recurves and compounds. Always just gripped what felt right and never paid much attention. Just went to try the different grips from your tutorial. Guess I’m in the mid to high grip. Tried the low and man that just felt odd. I felt like I could roll from mid to high while at full draw without torquing. Felt very forgiving. If I went to low I had to completely regrip. That’s what I love about archery. Everything’s so personal. Some of those super high grips looked scary if you shoot a broadhead. Hope you had a good school year and can enjoy your summer off. Wish I had teachers like you when I was in school.

Let's talk "Draw Length" for a moment. In February, I had a shoulder replacement surgery on my left shoulder. It was a little tough for awhile, but I came back and am now able to shoot my bows with no pain. However, I found out that the surgeon gave me a little something unexpected.....an extra 1" on my left arm !!! What used to be a solid 29" draw length, is now a very solid 30" draw length !! I own 10 different bows (no recurve/longbows) and many of them being older Mathews (no adjusting modules), it really put a kink in my archery arsenal !! Fortunately, I was able to overcome the obstacle with minimal difficulty, and now have them back to full operating condition. Never give in, never give up !!

I loved the video! In truth, my grip has changed a lot over time. Either because I changed my hand position, or I changed the physical grip of my bow. I shoot a medium to low wrist grip. I try not to think about it too much. Because if it feels right, everything will work out.

Thanks for sharing this, I have never really paid attention to which one or the importance of grip angles. I have only ever had one compound bow or bow in general. That being a 2006 PSE Fire Flite 33 from Cabela's. It has a wooden grip as you mentioned. I believe I am more of a mid wrist grip, but will pay attention when I go shooting later today.

Thanks for the Video. I found that I like it as low as it can go with my barebow. I have 31.5" Drawlengh so that maybe has something to do with it as you said. From my feeling high grips require aditional mussels that have to work in order to keep the joint aligned in the way you want it.

Really good video. Wish more bow mfgrs would offer bows with removable grip so you can try the different angles. I had to do the Sugru Moldable Glue to change the angle on my Hoyt Contender. Don't know if it really helps but it's a bit of a process to put it on, can't just take it off to compare the difference so I just use it like that.

Nice! The grip is preferential but also probably the most important thing when choosing a compound bow these days. Like 30 years ago it was much more high wrist or mid-wrist. Not a good thing for a guy who has double jointed elbows. The original Mathews Ultra-light, Featherlite & Signature I shot pretty well but had to be much more aware of locking my elbow & using a mid-grip. But the custom wood grips designed by Mathew McPherson were excellent & I shot them pretty well. I had a custom Bighorn recurve that did not have the deep throat grip that Ben Pearson recurve has. Had a friend that had that bow & didn't like it. However these new bows with a low grip specifically the Prime's r ideal for the low grip. One thing u have to be aware of is putting too much pressure on the thick pad of your hand. As u push away u r pulling straight back but the grip wants to go to the left torque position. As u r drawing, not @ full draw when u hit the letoff & r able to just rest it in your hand with absence of any torque. The new Nexus 4 grip is very similar to the shape of the other recent Prime bows. But it has a very smooth draw cycle & less torque if u need to draw quickly as the target looks away so when u hit full draw u r naturally in a better anchor position. We all should be thinking of being more natural. Why fight gravity if u don't have to. It's also more enjoyable while giving yourself a much higher level of confidence. Shooting from a saddle up high is much more different than decades of shooting out of a fixed 🌳stand. Take advantage of the opportunities, don't make life harder than it needs to be.

I love your videos. Keep them coming. This year I moved to a Torqueless High Wrist grip while playing with getting that perfect draw length. I have shot everything since the early 80’s. I notice now that cocking my wrist up with a low or mid grip isn’t as comfortable as it used to be. The high wrist is working for me. I am gripping, drawing, and anchoring very consistently. The Torqueless high wrist is not as radical as the high wrist grips of the past.

With my Elite Kure weirdly I have a lot of pressure up high. Probably more of a mid-high wrist. It concentrates the contact to a smaller area for me so I don’t torque. The best part about Elite is it’s narrow at the top now with the Kure/EnKore which has helped guys like me feel comfortable with what works for us. Some of the other guys basically give you a stick to put your hand on and it forces you into 1 grip…which kind of stinks….cough, cough Mathews Focus… cough, cough….

I do notice that high wrist tend to work best with push out, straight, or extended bow arm. While medium to low wrist grip tend to work best with bend bow arm. Is this has something to do with the relative natural wrist position for any given bow arm form?
@averagejackarchery
@averagejackarchery 3 жыл бұрын
I would agree! You'll also see a lot of guys with longer draws (30" and up) prefer low wrist as I, anecdotally, have had a lot of bows I outgrew in my youth but still had to shoot. Low wrist and bent arm meant I could function with a short draw length than what I should have. I think it's a semi-constant thing across us big dudes.

Long time viewer, first time caller, I have a question that isn’t related to the topic of the video itself. I notice that your blue target bow seems to be set up with your peep “stitched in” with what amounts to a pair of unconnected constrictor knots rather than setting the peep, tying it in at the center (at the peep) and then served in above and below in order to lock it into the string. Why would you choose this method of serving in a peep that, in my experience, is less secure and more apt to shift? When I stitch in a peep it is concrete and impossible to shift. It definitely takes longer but it can not be moved when I do it properly. I’m a newb I just want to learn from people smarter than me.
@averagejackarchery

I tie around the peep, and then one knot above, one knot below. Has always worked well as a standard for me and it doesn't move!

@@averagejackarchery thank you for responding. I’m too new I guess to trust that and use a continuous single knot that runs top to bottom, above and below, because I’ve seen too many times separate knots sliding. Must mean I need to learn how to stitch better. Thank you for answering my question.

You mentioned that target shooters don't use a high wrist grip and then showed a picture of an olympic archer, virtually every olympic archer uses a high wrist grip. Recurves don't have timing like compounds. Putting your palm into the bow is going to stress the bottom limb more and throw off the "timing" of your shot. Americans have low wrist longbows, they are called hill style longbows. People that shoot flat longbow (or recurves) have to cant the bow, so that they get proper arm alignment while maintaining a proper grip. Its the product of the limitation of not being able to glue on a handle that comes from selfbows. Saying that any particular grip is more consistent is BS, there are different grips for different styles. Brady ellison shoots a high/medium grip and can keep up with most compound guys. The Koreans are some of the best olympic archers in the world and they are all shooting high grips.
