Hi Lara, I'd definitely recommend a brad nailer (18 gauge) as the first nailer to purchase. It shoots a nail from 5/8" to 2" (the Ryobi Airstrike in the video does) and these nails are very tiny, so hard to see when in project, but also very difficult to drive by hand without a brad nailer. A finish nailer is usually a 15 or 16 gauge nailer, and these shoot much bigger nails, more difficult to hide and can be driven by hand. Those nails are generally used for bigger pieces of trim - like exterior moulding.

Hi Ana! I love all of your videos. I just hit the jackpot and found a brand new miter saw, compound saw, and jig saw in my grandpa's garage. We also scored a Skillsaw and finishing nail gun with compressor. I can wait to get started on my first projects which will be your console table and farmhouse bench. All I need now is a pocket drill jig. Thank you so much for inspiring me. It's so hard to find quality, handmade, and affordable furniture in Hawaii!!!

I love what I have seen so far from Ana White. I need to make things as I cannot afford ready made but I am not very confident with tools. So, I would love to see much more detailed information showing how to use the different tools Ana mentioned in her video correctly. For example the pocket hole jig looks difficult to use and get the holes at the correct angles and in the right places. Also, one 'tool' that was not really mentioned, and many people do not have, is a sturdy work bench. I would really like to know how to make one for my garage please Ana, and I very much hope to see more videos from you in future.

Hi Ana, Great intro to Basic Tools. You mentioned getting a pocket jig and though they are handy to have they are also expensive. An alternative to the Jig is to just buy the Pocket Drill alone and practice drilling the same hole without the Jig; of course it will not be as simple but it is easy enough that with a little practice one can get quick with it. Just remember to start almost 90 degrees until the bit starts to bite then angle it about 60 degrees to finish the hole. Again practice is key so don't use your finish piece to practice on, make sure to use scrap. Obviously having the $100.00 dollar, or more Jig is Ideal, but a $7.00 drill will suffice in the meantime... I magically found your channel today and I look forward to your next project, keep up the great work....

Hi Ana, I am very new at this and I am still looking at what electrical tools to buy. I would like to know if you recommend to buy cordless tools (saws, drill or hammer drill, sanders). I've seen that these are more expensive than the ones you connect to the light, but I don't know if in the long run I will get fed up of connecting them. Can you comment on this? What are your suggestions on this?

I like the pocket hole jig idea but I'm not sure I'm ready to have to buy special screws for them (from what I understand). Currently I get by with specific screws for some jobs, or random screws for other jobs. They are all cheap or inexpensive, even from garage sales. But a specific screw needed for pocket holes, that's where I'm a little confused on making the move to that, even though I see the benefit of the pocket hole.

I'm sure Ryobi makes some great tools but first one I bought was an angle grinder. After a few uses the thing took off up the street when I plugged in in. I exchanged it and that one did the same.

Speed Square is not for making straight lines. I mean it helps, but it's used for roof pitch.

Small Tool Tip: Watch your vid and take note of how you hold the board when using the Miter Saw... STOP doing that right now! Do not hold the board lightly with half your fingers in the air and not on the board. Because when that thing kicks - and it EVENTUALLY will - it will/could suck that board or you hand right into the blade because you weren't holding your board firmly. From this day forward - Stop and think about how your holding the piece your cutting on the miter saw every time BEFORE you start the machine. Scares the crap outta me seeing you hold the board like that.

Good video but I think perhaps you are listing more than the essentials. To start out all you need is a drill, drill bits, a screwdriver and a circular saw. I made a wardrobe, 15 years ago as my first project, with just those tools. Admittedly I could do it better and faster now that I have more tools but there is no sense buying all that stuff you mention from the beginning if you later find woodworking is not for you.
