The latest Anbernic handheld is a weird mix of design choices, but somehow it all comes together into a nifty little package. Let's take a first look at this handheld to see if it might be worth your consideration.

-Well it looks comfortable to hold, the RGB30 is pretty comfortable too, this more so because of the grips. RGB30 grips are pretty cheap too btw -Better chip = more games (this can do psp, NGC, PS2, Dreamcast flawlessly). The RGB30 can do psp but not as great, no gamecube,ps2 or dream cast I believe. -having an android based system is cool in my eyes. easier to set things up. -No wonky charging like the RGB30 it seems There is still reason to get an RGB30 I would say But RG Cube is no doubt better. Different price point I imagine, so maybe not a fair comparison. That said, it looks to be a better build quality than the RGB30 (I’ve returned two so far due to issues; fingers crossed number three is ‘the one’). The more 1:1 devices the better IMO, it’s so versatile and has opened up the world of PICO 8 and Tate mode to me!

Cool to hear how much you enjoy this device. I was already 95% sold on just the idea of Anbernic taking a stab at a premium take on the powkiddy rgb30, but you make it sound even more promising. I already enjoyed the rgb30 more than most other budget handhelds from the past 18 months or so, but it just had too many build quality quirks for me to feel settled with it. Unpopular opinion, but I prefer analogs above the dpad. The analog stick usually sits higher than the dpad so I have to make sure I don't bump it when I use the dpad. In fact, I wouldn't mind having the right analog stick above the face buttons for the same reason.

I guess for me the big elephant in the room will be the price. If it is priced right sure it’ll be another hit for Anbernic. I own the RG556 and it’s an amazing handheld and with the current deals I believe the 556 is the best handheld money can buy right now. That Oled screen is just phenomenal. However it’s not that pocketable and that’s where the Cube comes in. But again it would be hard to justify buying one if the price is the same as the 556. What’s with the color scheme? They should make one like the gray RG405v. That would look amazing. We’ll see what Ambernic decides to do with the price.

At some point I want to see a poll of what people actually want out of analog stick placement. I swear looking at the comments of these videos, it seems like people hate both options. Retrois Pocket 2+ went the xbox route, people complained. They changed it to the playstation layout, people complained. People hate the left analog on the top here, while having no complaints about it on the Odin 2, which the Lite version is in this video. I never see any nuance for why one style over the other is preferred, just that the left stick is in one place over the other, and that means it's somehow a deal breaker.
@sket0tles
@sket0tles 2 ай бұрын
Honestly for this in particular, at least for me, at that screen ratio I'd rather have no analog sticks and less power. Only thing I'd want this thing for is decent integer scaled gameboy/color and the like with enough power to fast forward.

the stick-on-top placement is more popular for modern games because 3D games use the left analog stick for movement and it being easier to reach feels better. the d-pad gets more use in 2D titles so retro gamers generally prefer it on top. as a Retroid Pocket 2 owner, it was frankly kind of weird to have an analog stick I almost never used on the device unless I was poorly emulating an N64 game be the default row on a console so obviously meant to target mostly 2D retrogames. meanwhile, I've never used it but the Odin seems pretty popular for 6th gen and beyond emulation, Android gaming and streaming which are all scenarios where the analog stick being on the "home row" makes sense. personally, I prefer bottom row but as someone who games on PC almost every controller is on the Xbox style so neither bothers me, I couldn't imagine being super put off by one or the other
@iofevil91
@iofevil91 2 ай бұрын
I've wondered the same. Maybe it is just based on what people grew up with? Me personally, I prefer d-pad under the stick, it feels more comfortable. I still think the Xbox 360 controller is the most comfortable controller I have ever used. But I don't dislike the d-pad being above the stick. I grew up on PlayStation as well and never found the controllers uncomfortable. I think the Dualsense is a vast improvement over the Dualshocks but the d-pad placement is still more than fine. Maybe I am in the minority of thinking both are fine? lol

Watched both videos because I appreciate your hard work, especially before a vacation! Thanks Russ! I'm still on the fence about the Odin 2 Mini, but I'm kinda sold on the RG Cube since I've been wanting an upgrade from the RGB30, and it seems to be more powerful than the ZPG A1 Unicorn. Also, 28:41 really sums up Anbernic well lmao

Ahhh! It's so cute! In past months, I've gone from a watching enthusiast to a collector of these little machines. I don't think I'll be able to resist this little guy. I'm finding I like Anbernic the most...I don't know what it is, but something about their feel and look in my hands seduces me into an "I'm the brand you like the most, aren't I?" kind of thing... ...well, and then there's the Miyoo Mini+... 🤣

That's cuz the Odin 2 mini is a downgrade in basically every way besides some of the features of the panel lol. As an Odin 2 owner, the mini isn't remotely appealing, especially for more money
@waldamy

@@decegrease it's the same for other smaller devices. Iphone 15 gets less battery than the 15 Plus, Galaxy 24 gets less battery than Galaxy 24 Plus, both are harder to type on, coz the buttons are smaller, both are worse for media consumption. For many people a smaller screen is a downgrade. It's an alternative for those, who didn't get the Odin 2, because they wanted something smaller. And this is something smaller with the same power and arguably a better screen. Most small devices have tradeoffs we are willing or not willing to make, compared to the larger ones.

Okay, I think this is the first criticism I'll ever voice here. ;) I clearly remember you criticising Anbernic for having the left thumbstick at the bottom for devices that can do some GC and PS2, and being happy about it once they changed that, and here you'd prefer it the other way 'round. I guess it all depends on what platforms people will use the device for, but Anbernic's thinking matching your older wishes seems correct to me.
@M_CFV

The reasoning is that the screen is killer for retro games, and its a higher build quality than the rgb30. So this could have been an alternative higher quality rgb30 (albeit not that pocketable), but swapping the d pad positioning to be below makes it less of a retro handheld

He is not a 'reviewer' from a true reviewer sense but rather he is a marketer in disguise of these emulating devices. His main goals is to introduce and market many devices as possible and point out all the goods and bads but he never have a favorite or a standout because his job is to flourish the market with everything and indicating every devices has its pros for some people and cons for others. I am not a fan of this kind of review style. To me, you gotta be able to firmly state your opinion on what device is superior over others and create some drama. I sont need someone to read off a catalogie. That is boring.

I'd argue the RGB30 would be a better choice for PSP. Because at least then the buttons line up better with the screen. So your focus is less on the black bars. The RG Cube however, the D-Pad is bigger so it's more distracting, and the analog sticks have lighting. It makes it harder to tunnel vision on more wonky aspect ratios. Now RG Cube should be able to upscale better, but it's still a smaller screen than the original PSP so it's a weird trade off.

Unlike the ROG Ally, it’s just the exhaust for a fan that really isn’t needed most of the time. It *thankfully* isn’t the heatsink for a goddamn X86 device being physically on top of and in direct contact with the SD reader.
