Good review, as always. It’s a shame that the build quality isn’t up to their usual standards.

Mine came in the mail a couple days ago. Immediately had issues. The magnetic lid close sensor kept triggering while the lid was open. Had to disassemble it, clean the contacts, and put it back together before i could even use it. Easy fix, but frustrating nonetheless. Now that it's working, and has muOS Refried Beans release, I love it! Button clicky-ness isn't that bad for me. I'm tempted to put tape on the buttons to soften the noise, but I don't feel up to taking it apart again -- afraid I could break it if I keep opening it up (ribbon cable, etc)

Sorry to hear about the magnetic hinge issue but it is as I said in the video. The build quality on this device doesn't seem to be at the expected Anbernic level.

@@RetroCore Screen bleed on the RG Cube as well. Could it be that quality has taken a backseat to quantity at Anbernic? Say it ain't so Jo. Say it ain't so.

That is a good looking clamshell retro console. You'll just have to live with the squeaky screen hinges.

Ikaruga text screens output @ 30 fps. Also the FPS counter averages over the last 256 frames. So to check if your FPS is stable, monitor it during gameplay and not near or during screen changes (loading screens, text, menu's etc).

Great review lad. I was literally running Stock until muOS Refried Beans came out. I have to disagree with you on this one, I think this is their best design with the exception of the RG350. Just my opinion though.

Fair enough!👍. I don't think the design is bad but the build quality doesn't seem to be to their normal high standards.

@@RetroCore I tend to agree to a point. I mean yeah, the buttons on both my RG MotherFlippers and seriously noisy but when I'm wearing headphones to play anyway, it's a non-issue at that point. As for fit and finish, my grey SP seems better constructed than my Silver iteration. The seams on the grey one are flush and well finished whereas with the silver unit, the seams are just that little bit off, perhaps. 0.5mm, enough to irritate. 😉. These issues certainly speak to QC and QA issues within Anbernic.

I think that with it's button options, PSP and Dreamcast wouldn't be ideal anyway. The lack of analog support would make it atrocious. That being said, if the price was right.... Not terrible for an $80 device

All these retro emulators seem to have been stuck on the can-almost-emulate-psp-and-dreamcast level for the last 10+ years. Are there no SoC out there yet that are powerful and cheap enough?
@marcelosoares7148
@marcelosoares7148 2 ай бұрын
Definitely there is but i think they get higher margins by selling these. Back in 2014-2015 i had a cheap Android tablet that could handle up to Dreamcast just fine so i think these devices should at least handle all PSP games fine at minimum.

For the sub-$100 class, the devices running Linux (not Android) seem to be a bit better. The Trimui Smart Pro is pretty good. It supports 1TB micro SD cards. But I like you am looking forward to the PS2 emulation era for Chinese emulation handhelds. Processors (ARM) and storage need to become a bit cheaper.

@@JohnGottsAgreed. That's a good fit for sub $100. For Sub $200, RG Cube, RG556 or the best choice Retroid Pocket 4 Pro.

This particular market only really took off about 5 years ago or so, and these days you can find options around the $100-$125 mark that'll run PSP, N64 and DC extremely well. The problem is that above that line, emulating things gets SIGNIFICANTLY more difficult. The chips have been getting more powerful, but that console generation posed a number of challenges to emulation that earlier ones just didn't. So most of the power increases in newer chips tend to go to being able to run equivalent emulation quality at lower power draw, being able to use more advanced shaders, and ironing out the edge case games that tend to be harder to run than the rest. Finally, this chip made its debut in devices that regularly go for $35 or so. It's weak (though still faster than equivalent devices from a couple years ago) because it's quite cheap. This particular device uses it to maintain OS compatibility with the rest of the line, and costs more because the clamshell design is more expensive to design and produce. It makes more sense in the context of the rest of the lineup.

My only issues with stock firmware. 1. Slightly longer bootup times compared to onion os. 2. Exiting games takes longer than it should.

@RetroCore

I'm sure there's a few options for testing but Start Ocean seems to be one of the more difficult to master while the other games you mentioned tend to run just fine on most emulators.
