Did I redeem myself at Celeste finally? On sale 7/12 @ 3am Pacific for $65 USD Notes and corrections: After speaking with other reviewers and devs who have early units, it seems my 2 units are in the minority and others are seeing some warmth on the right side, but not as hot as mine. We might be ok here for retail. Temp gun picked up 99 degrees over the CPU, with a room baseline of 82 degrees, with the added thermal pad, temp dropped to 86 degrees (Fahrenheit). Also, at the end I meant to say *hopefully* the warmth is a pre-production issue only, not that I am *sure* it is. Error #2: meant to say *two SD card slots, not USB slots

Next week: Anbernic announces the 55XX-H SP. It's a DS Lite style handheld with two 5 inch screens (bottom being touch) & the D900 series chipset, powerful enough to play NDS games. FYI if this actually happens I AM taking credit before Game Console steals the thought

Yeah but it has no d pad, only switch style sticks that drift right out of the box. It's a shame but maybe it will be fixed on the new 405xx SP D which will have 3 screens but they all light bleed

That seems too perfect for something being released by Anbernic. They would not be able to iterate 2x per week on a already perfect device

They can hide longer sticks on these things with the way they do the grips on the rgcube. Make them go deeper in the device while increasing the size of the hole on the surface to increase the range of motion.

Honestly I'm happy Anbernic releases multiple versions of the same Handheld. It allows people like me to wait for the Form-Factor they want then buy it.

I agree. I pulled the trigger on this version. I’ve had the 35xxv and wasn’t a fan of the vertical layout. This being horizontal and 4 inch 4:3 is gonna be the perfect gba emulation system for me

Thanks for the review And thanks for the tip on the thermal pad I just open my 35xxsp The h700 chip gets hot under the battery when I saw your thermal grizzly pad I got left oversout from a Xbox one x I did works a treat And not warm round back now Many thanks

Thanks for the great review, I really appreciate it. Quick question, I'm considering the RG405m but I'm super hesitant to get another android handheld after it took hours and hours to get my retroid pocket 2s running. Would the 405 be the same terrible out-of-the-box experience?

I definitely plan to purchase this one ASAP! I see why the battery is smaller, they wanted to make this handheld very slim which I like. I'm also glad they didn't add the rubber pads on the back. I plan to purchase the black RG40XXH and later install two Sandisk 1.5TB micro sd cards into it.

@@jonathonearl482 Plot twist: the battery doesn’t take up the space in the shell, leaving about 3mm of space. The battery is smaller because it’s no longer over the CPU, not because they wanted to keep the thing small (it seems). Also, 1.5TB?! I don’t think it can play every game that you’d fit on those cards 😂

@@RamRoxillo The extra space isn't for more games. It's for complete series TV shows. My RG40XXH is planned to be both a handheld game console and a portable video media player.

Just so you know, it can't take that big of a card. I think its just up to 512 not 1.5 T.

@@stevenbyrnes6869 Yes it can! My RG28XX and RG35XXSP both have two 1TB Team Group Pro micro sd cards installed and it works like a charm. Just because the specs tell you it's a maximum of 512GB doesn't mean that's the actual limit. I found this out a few years back thru testing. Practically all my handhelds have a 1TB micro sd installed into them. What I plan to do with my RG40XXH is nothing new to me, it's just a repeat of what I've already done twice. The incredible thing with the ANBERNIC RG35XX line of devices, these are the first in which you can install not only one but two 1TB micro sd cards at the same time. All my PowKiddy devices and remaining previous ANBERNIC devices don't allow but one 1TB micro sd card even though some also have two micro sd card slots.

I'm excited I want it! Tell us what's the over all size of the unit? Do we need to buy a new case or will it fit in one of the ones we have already? Almost looks like it might fit in one of the Aliexpress 405V cases Rocking out Celeste this time!

It will fit in the 405M case, or other Anbernic 4" candybar cases from what I can tell. Redeemed myself I hope haha 😛

Considering only same chipset devices, this appears to improve on the RG35XX-H with it's stacked shoulders, larger screen, curved sides and better battery placement but with how the chipset is pushed, I think it does need at least a passive cooling vent. A thermal pad or low profile heatsink will indeed help a bit!

Does the battery drain bad when on stanby turned off? Also I keep forgetting to ask do the mame or arcade on these devices allow you to enter the dipswitch or neogeo bios to change settings? Most arcade especially Street Fighter roms are set on expert difficulty by default.

Yeah you get full access to retroarch settings, as long as they are in there, I need to check the standalone versions though if that's what you mean. Battery drains from 80% to 1% in 9 hours of standby.

The heat issue could affect lifespan. And the sticks look a little too close to the buttons and pad for me. So far I think the H model is the best out of these. I have that, the Plus (and the OG) and the 28XX, which kept me busy waiting at the doctors office for a couple of hours yesterday. I enjoy all of them but feel that the H seems to be the best out of them. I don't like the charging and heat issues on the SP or now the heat issue on this one, even though the 4" screen would be nice as I get older, lol.

Yeah I like the 35XX H over this, for those reasons you mentioned. Just a little more care put into that device it feels like. Although this one is an interesting variant, and will be right for some people.

I'm trying to decide on a first handheld... I like the form factor and colors of the RG35XX H more, but the battery acting like a heatsink for the CPU is... not super comforting for longevity. lol So I don't think I hotspot would bother me...? and the bigger screen might be nice? I just want something smaller than my steamdeck to carry around and play mostly GBA games with, I would have just got a Miyoo Mini + but having the option to play a couple PSP games like LocoRoco and Patapon would be great. Just... decisions... 😅

Anbernic ran out of designs, so they made a mushed version of the TrimUI Smart Pro with an iffy standby mode, smaller screen, and more heating issues.

Ah that's a fair comparison! They are very different feeling devices, trim ui being much smaller, with those quiet clicky buttons. This will be more powerful, with a much bigger screen, and more cozy buttons. The trim ui is so dang pocketable though.

Anbernic releasing yet another handheld with flaws on purpose. Seriously, it's draining seeing all these handhelds coming out every other week. I wish chinese companies would just genuinely try making the best handheld they can with a good os and all. But no they wont. They keep selling passable consoles with purposeful flaws hoping shills will throw money at them

The DMG color scheme with the burgundy buttons is okay but ANBERNIC should have done a USA SNES version with the lavender buttons. That DMG color scheme is so overdone at this point.

Ah fair. For me im not worried about a fire, but it is uncomfortable without the thermal fix, and also, we're learning this might be a minority issue to just a few units. 🙏

It didn't catch on fire and the battery didn't explode right? I really hope they used a different charging controller than the one on the SP. The uncomfortable hot spot on the RG40XX H is a red flag in my books.

No explosions so far, charging seems solid. However I would guess the charging controller will be somewhat similar to the SP, as many of these are sharing the same components.

I'm sick of these handhelds having light up sticks. Like why? it just drains the battery and increases the price of the device. They just look tacky too. This would be a very sleek device otherwise

if they put that insulating tape in there they obviously knew how hot it got. They just did the bare minimum but not nearly enough. Imagine how much worse it would be if they didn't do that. This one is a pass for me.

@@soupnazi81because the 35XX H has the battery on top of the CPU, spreading out the heat. But some people were very vocal about it so now they’ve placed them next to each other, creating this heat issue.

I just got fed up with all these devices with issues. If it’s not Anbernic with screen bleeding and over sharpening, poor OS implementations, heat, battery drain, etc it’s Retroid with trigger issues and incorrect colour gamut. I sold the lot and went with an Odin 2 for a more stress free life.

The question is: does the software make use of better sticks? I’ve heard that custom firmware like Rocknix fixes similar stocks on other devices, so there’s hope it could just be a software fix.

Seems a bit unfair to knock it for its heat in the middle of July. Every device is going to feel hotter and be more uncomfortable playing in the middle of the summer.

Absolutely it is a hot month, but I've been testing next to our AC as well, my units just get a bit warmer it seems like. Others haven't noticed this as much. So it might just be me. But, this is just my initial experience, and i'm spending more time with them to form a final opinion, but I can say the 40xx has been a lot better since adding the thermal pads.

Anbernic and most retro handheld manufacturers, for that matter, need to stop producing handhelds so often. This is beginning to cause "hobby fatigue," and consumers will become overwhelmed and disinterested, resulting in a general lack of attention to the hobby. Whilst not dying completely, we have seen this trend in "similar" niche hobbies. IEMs, keyboards, 3D printers etc... Retro handhelds seem to be following this trajectory. If these manufacturers could focus on developing a "complete" and "refined" product instead of rushing to compete for the "flavour of the week," they might find it more beneficial in the long term, both in terms of retaining consumers, building hype, and saving costs on factory moulds, machining, etc. Obviously, people may disagree with this, but I am halfway out of the door at this point. Everything has just become white noise to me.

This is NOT $65. Can all youtubers just say the price as it is? It's clear that the "shipping" that Anbernic charges us for is not real. They charge the exact same shipping price whether you live in japan or in antarctica. Shipping from china is CHEAP, it should not be $10-12!! And their boxes are small and light. In reality, all these devices are their price +$12 on top, with free or close to free shipping. Stop saying this is a $65 device, no one can buy it for $65. This is a $78 device at best. And I cannot get it bellow $92 for some reason, be it from Anbernic official website or aliexpress because they even throw stupid fees on top.

It is $65 plus shipping for the first 72 hours, then it goes up to $70 plus shipping, ive made sure to place this in the description, but it's something I'll be mindful of to say out loud and call out more. You make solid points here!
