My father is Scottish and his family is from Scotland too; I was always curious about my mother’s side of the family; she’s British; so I decided to create her family tree and find her ancestors for her and very surprisingly, her ancestors were Scottish! From Forfarshire, Angus, Arbroath, Longforgan, Perth; Dating back to the 1500/1600’s! I’m British myself, being born and bred in Greater London, I wouldn’t necessarily say I’m “half Scottish” I would say I’m British with Scottish Heritage and Roots, my father made sure we knew our heritage though, he was very strong headed that me and my siblings would grew up with what he grew up with in Scotland; celebrating and joining on Scottish traditions and cultural events❤️ we celebrate burns night, he would cook up mince and Tatties for us, haggis, shortbread, Scottish tablet, the works! I’m very proud of my heritage, I haven’t had the upmost privilege of visiting Scotland yet but I’m hoping I’ll do soon with my mother❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I so agree with you about walking where our ancestors walked. I have wanted to go to Scotland ever since I was a young child, and I never knew why, until about 2 yrs ago when I found an ancestor who was a Scotsman. I've always wanted to learn to play bagpipes, and now I know why. The country and my ancestors are calling me, but I'n afraid I won't be able to make it happen financially. Tis a shame. I was recently notified by Family Search that King James of Scotland, the IV, is my 12th gr grandfather. So yes, there is a strong desire to walk where they walked, see the heather, the beautiful country side, the old homes, etc.I'd like to see the old papers, marriages, christening certificates, etc and get copies if possible. Longing for home.............

Being Scottish means something. It's great! It's not just about the DNA, the birth place or the parentage. It's not about nationalism or division. It's a way of being. A mindset that sees through the divisory walls that society constructs. It's about being yourself while accepting others and working towards the common good. It's about coming together and challenging the corporate puppets that perpetuate the never ending cycle of war and greed. The Scots are a genuine, caring, fiery, humorous and intelligent people who have given the world so much......just don't piss us off or else!!!! Refugees, power and rich, religious and atheist, black and white, gay and straight..all are welcome to this wonderful, beautiful nation....all are welcome to engage in the conversation...and all are welcome to adopt a Scottish perspective and start to help steer this world in a new direction! It may appear a strange juxtaposition, but by being more Scottish, you become less concerned with nation and division, and more interested in working together as one humanity towards a future of global equality and peace. While many will tar the Scots with the imperialist brush historically, please note that the Scots went forward and gave to the world while the others divided, conquered and took. The benefits the Scots reaped was re-invested into future generations, not hoarded by royals and gentry. There is no denying Scotland had it's fair share of geed ridden individuals who sold out their country and people. But there wrongs will be put right in time. There's no doubt that past Scots where merciless in their occupation of lands and treatment of others, such as in Ulster. But the Irish migration to Scotland that resulted enriched the community and diluted the air of superiority still seen in small sections of Scottish society. We are not perfect and acknowledge this. We have a long way to go and accept the challenge. We are Scots-minded and will overcome the madness that engulfs the world, starting squarely with the faceless limpets that leech in the corridors of Westminster. Adopt a Scottish perspective and be proud of your land and your people, but also recognise that borders, races, religions and sexuality are simply illusory barriers that you have allowed your mind to create. Be proud of what you have contributed to the world as a person and a nation - don't let your bank balance be the measure of your success as you lie on your death bed reflecting on a worthy life or not. We are possibly the universes most complicated and greatest creation - billions of unique individuals who share this tiny planet spinning through an almost infinite universe. Don't let them fool you into sending our sons and daughters off to kill others sons and daughters in foreign battlefields. Take off the polarising shades, see through the bullshit and think Scottish!

I have 30% Irish and 68% Scottish DNA. I have always been told by a few of my maternal reletives that some of my ancestors originated in Scotland. The one issue I have with tracing my ancestors back to Scotland is that being from Northern Ireland, the furthest I have have been able to trace my ancestors back is around 1670-1680s in Ulster, thanks to grave headstones and one ancestor in the mid to late 1800s who traced his family genealgy back generations and left lots of documents and writings which really helped me figure out that side of the family. That is on my maternal side. My dads family is even more of a mystery since there is no father listed on the birth record of my grandfather. I have pretty much looked at a lot of records including Title Applotments, subscribers to books, newspapers, 1851 Irish Census extracts (most that exist don't have my ancestors mentioned) and immigration records for family who left Ireland helped a little too but not much. So I am stumped and can't go back any further than the 1670s since birth and death records in Ireland started in 1864, marriage certificates from 1840 onwards and looking at other records like agricultural censuses hasn't really helped me find any more new information besides what I have already known so I feel a bit stumped.

Actually, that's how it was with the USA authorities. I traced relatives who emigrated to Detroit in the 1920s and their documents showed that Scotland was regarded as part of England because up until the 1970s 'England' was regarded as a valid name for Great Britain/United Kindom. In Scotland, that was never the case, of course but the US just refer to UK as England. The worst misnomer has been 'Queen of England' even though England hasn't been a sovereign kingdom since 1707. There is filmed record of Churchill and Charles correcting people on that. The worst offenders are the American media and doddery English historians.

My dad 's family name was originally Lambroughton which is a specifically Ayrshire name. Most of the branches Anglicised it to Lamberton although there is a Canadian branch who still use it. As far back as records can be found we have been Scotland and since Lambroughton is such an area specific name and quite rare we can take a leap of faith back th 1538 when a,Robert and Thomas Lambrochtoune were mentioned in Scottish Record Society publi she'd a transcription of The Register of the Great Seal. A distant American cousin found me on Facebook a couple of years ago. Our last COMMON ancestor lived about 400 years ago.

My DNA shows that I highly likely have realitives in Glasgow, which should be correct as my Paternal Great Great Grandfather Bell emigrated from Paisley to Philadelphia in 1859, even though he was born in Ulster in 1841. According to my Great Aunt, her Grandmother had told her that her Grandfather had moved BACK to Scotland about age 12 to live with relatives there before coming to America. I have valid information of him having joined the Loyal Lilly Lodge of the Order of Orange in Paisley, where he learned his trade. He was a tailor who began working on trans Atlantic ships so he could work off his cost to arrive in America as a "free man". I was baptized Presbyterian. On my Paternal side my Grandmother 's maiden name was McLaughlin and my Great Grandmothers maiden name was McVey. My Great Grandmother Frances McVey Bell's Grandmother was a Ross. My DNA also indicates highly likely British relatives as well which also makes sense since Bell is a Borders name and quite possibly ended up in Ulster for that reason. I also have on my Paternal side a Great Great Grandmother whose maiden name was McClarigan with red hair and a temper to match, my Paternal Grandmother was terrified of her Maternal Grandmother.

I am have been stuck for months with my family history research at my ancestor John McKenney born circa 1625 in Scotland (some people say isle of skye some say argyll some say glasgow). No definite answers on him prior to his arrival in Scarborough, Maine, US after the battle of Worcester when he became a Scottish Prisoner of War & shipped aboard the John & Sarah 1651 to New England & worked off his servitude. Any advice on where to dig deeper in the 1600s? Some have linked him to an Alexander Mackenzie/mckenney born 1611 Fearn Scotland but I can't find any real evidence of that.

I’m half Scottish from my mom, my dad was mixed with Ilocano/Chinese/Spanish/Irish. So I’m half mutt, lol! But I’ve been able to track my Scottish side to the 1700’s. Maybe further if I can go to California and look at my aunt’s family tree book. I’ve also done an ancestry DNA test and have found over 1,000 relatives, almost all of them are of Irish/Scottish descent or mixed with other European ethnic backgrounds. Funny you mentioned Campbell because my maternal Great Great Grandparents we’re Campbell’s! There is also Garlic, Maynard & Marsh. I just can’t figure out where in Scotland they originated from before going to America hundreds of years ago. Does it help that I’m related to the Presley’s? Well didn’t know that I was until the DNA test.

Hi Wanda and thank you for reaching out to us. We are disappointed to hear that you have some concerns about your results because they do not match up with what you know about your family history. We're eager to address this with you. It's important to bear in mind that even with a perfect knowledge of the history of your ancestors, DNA can still show some unexpected results. Remember AncestryDNA ethnicity estimates are based on available data. Ancestry uses established baseline ethnicities taken from living people with verified roots in a particular area. This is otherwise known as our reference panel. We calculate your ethnicity estimate by comparing your DNA to this reference panel made up of DNA samples from over 68,000 people, representing 84 different global regions and over 1,800 communities. It is important to note that DNA does not respect borders and modern political boundaries do not always accurately represent relationships between different regions. Heavy migration over the last few hundred years and subsequent inter- marrying means that DNA for some regions can be particularly admixed, especially with closely related regions. Remember our test does not test for nationality and so while your more recent ancestors may not have actually lived in Scotland, this is not to say that they did not originate from Scotland. If your ancestors before you had migrated from Scotland, they would have brought their DNA with them and this in turn would be passed down to you. Genetic inheritance is completely random and so while we each inherit 50% of our fathers DNA and 50% of our mothers DNA, we do not get an equal split of their DNA. We've linked an article below which discusses inheritance. support.ancestry.com/s/article/Understanding-Inheritance Remember that your DNA is only one element of a much larger picture, and your family history and relatives will play an important role in your genetic make-up, even if they are not specifically reflected in your ethnicity results. Check out the linked below for more information on the factors that can caused unexpected results. We hope this article helps better explain your results. support.ancestry.com/s/article/Unexpected-Ethnicity-Results

@@johnpatrick5307 Yes there is, Ulster is a part of Ireland, that's like saying there is no ''Central Scotland'' it pinpointed areas in which my ancestors came from, my dna is 68% ireland and Scotland but then it went more in to detail about where specifically, such as Ulster and Northeast+central Scotland.

Do you know the names of your grandparents? If not, order a copy of your father's birth record. Once you know their names, search for his siblings. They would be your aunts and uncles. search.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=60143

First residents of New Scotland, bloodline traced back to the direct bloodline of Robert the Bruce and Constantine of Denmark. How can this be possible, the real King of England is named Michael and he lives in Australia, wow hmm im not sure this can be true with my family.

Hi Marco! Many thanks for checking out our video. We know that it can be tough to establish how you connect to some of the regions revealed in a DNA test for example. There are luckily many options available to help shed some light on such connections which often have roots stretching back generations. If you have taken the AncestryDNA test then you can compare your results with your DNA matches to see what regions you might have in common including Scotland. If your unfamiliar with how to do this then click here support.ancestry.com/s/article/Comparing-AncestryDNA-Matches . This can be particularly useful if you share individual communities with your matches as these are often geographically precise and can help you to establish the origin of a connection. You can also share family trees with your matches and try to piece the puzzle together step by step. This guide runs through how to make the most from your match's support.ancestry.com/s/article/Making-the-Most-of-AncestryDNA-Matches . We hope this will help you progress but please call on our team anytime you need us.🌳

What some people fail to realize in researching their ancestry, especially "Scottish", is that the DNA goes back beyond the notions of "Scotland" or "England". One of my daughters whose mother is Breton (born and raised and still living there in the Tregor region), had a DNA test done last year. On my side it was Scottish and English. Her mothers side was situated in modern southern Scotland. The Britons migrated to what is now southern England and then over to what is now "Brittany:" There was no Scotland or England or Brittany 1500 years ago. Only post Roman Britain and Armorica. DNA goes back beyond modern "national" borders.
