Awesome! This explains why my ancestor Rachel Jane is shown as three separate daughters to her parents in ancestry trees - three census records showed her using three different names and nobody merged them in their tree (Rachel, Jane and Janey). Her grandmother was even worse: Eleanor, Ellen and Nellie. Thank you!

Thank you, Crista, The final suggestion on how to change a hint (rather than search for a record I already can see), so it can be saved to a different person will save me headaches in the future.

I discovered the right-click/open in new tab option and also use it frequently. Good tip. Another I'd like to add is when saving a census record to multiple family members, make sure you check the image; I've often found the transcript record to omit one (or more) of the children.

Hey Crista, thanks for this. I love your tips for using tabs. Just a comment on Ulysses Grant Lawrence....in the 1870 census I think "Grant M" is really "Grant U"...just transcribed incorrectly...which seems to make more sense. I've seen first and middle given names switched around a lot in census records especially, for whatever reason. Thanks for your very helpful videos!

Great video. I've wondered how to handle references to parents in birth and death records. I think I might have already done it wrong on some of my hints by linking to the non-principal first. Is there a way to see where I might have done it wrong?

Thank you Crista wonderful presentation. I don't add parent to birth, marriage and death records as there are too many children and it clutters up the parents source info. I would like to suggest a topic for a future training session: Anne Gillespie Mitchell created a spreadsheet to compare information from census record from 1850 to 1940. I would like to know how to attach this spreadsheet and document files to individual profiles.

I have had hints come up on birth and death certificates for a relative, when I view the record, they are one of the parents, not the person named on the birth or death certificate. I would like to save the record for the person who is actually whom the document is for. Is there an easy way to do this? Also, to keep this as a reference for the parents how can I categorize this so I will still obtain hints for the parent if I am still missing their birth or death certificate?

To save it to the person it references, click on the name of the primary person (usually a child in the example you shared). Then click Save to a person in my tree. While you are saving it, it will give you the option of attaching the record to just the child or to the child and both parents. That's your decision how you would like to do that.

what do you do if you have just now learned this trick with saving to all in family and have not done this before....how do you go back to attaching records to everyone in tree?

You can methodically go back to each person in your tree and clean it up. Or, you can just do it as you come across new records or information.

How do I save my hints that come up under another relative but it is the wrong relative. I would like to attach it to the right person

If you do a SEARCH to find that record, you will have the option to SAVE it to anyone in your tree.

I put some ancestors on the wrong tree. How can I move them to the correct tree?

Go to the profile page in the tree for that person, click on TOOLS and Save to Tree. Then save them to the tree you wish to save them to.

Another issue not mentioned is "verify the information is correct. Don't assume the record is correct and just save it". Census, Death, and Burial (FindAGrave) records are OFTEN wrong. Census examples: wrong gender, wrong name, (ex: July Male instead of Julie Female) , wrong birth year, children listed but the Head is grandparent or relative not parent, child missed. I've even seen race wrong. Neighbors were black and census taker just kept using B, neighbors grouped together in same household, off one line, parents birthplaces reversed, etc Death: often parents are wrong and birthdate/year is wrong, birth place often wrong FindAGrave: too often entered from online trees instead of grave or cemetery record with burial place unknown or wrong, tombstone information wrong (believe it or not). I have one ancestor that actual tombstone birth year was off by 40 years, one by 10 years even death record and burial place correct. Extreme, but many off by a few years. Be careful when saving!
