Some people completely missed the point Dr. Yonas’ is trying to bring to bear and particularly his approach to criticism. What he was saying is that his belief and approach are to engage in analysis and in search of truth. You can not engage in critical analysis and research without this fundamental understanding. Pointing out directly the personalities who advocate certain political stance is not ‘name-calling’ and hearsay, it gives context to the positions some people hold. Besides, what is important is the larger political positions, ethos and its consequences to multitude of people. Messay’s admonition and confrontation is out of line in this regard, and clearly Dr. Yonas’ was taken aback by this disrespect, I’m sorry to say. This stance stifles open discussion and collaboration. This writer, does not wholly agree with Dr. Yonas’ analysis, but respects his mind, openness, and fearless dedication to contribute to the dilemmas his country is facing (and this is coming from an Eritrean). Culture is important but it is also dynamic and changing, not to mention that there are also negative aspects of culture that have ceased to be useful. Some aspects of culture could be antithetical to progress as well. People sometimes use cultural practices in order to not face some detrimental aspects of certain beliefs and activities.

The weakness of Fano is the inability of its politicians to form a central leadership; their main excuse is that they are busy fighting. That indicates they have not yet established a clear division between civilian and military leadership. If they did, the politicians could have time to get together to form one front. I hope they focus more on saving Amhara and Ethiopia and avoid selfish issues. It is sad and painful for me to say this about Fano.
