"A ghaoil, leig dhachaigh gum mhàthair mi " Love let me home to my mother performed by Julie Fowlis
Taken from Julie’s fourth studio album, this hypnotic and mysterious song tells the tale of a young girls’ encounter with the ‘each-uisge’ or water-horse.
Featuring award winning Scottish ensemble RANT, with strings arranged by flautist and composer Tom Doorley.
Love, let me home to my mother
Love, let me home to my mother
Darling, let me home to my mother
Love, let me home
to my mother
I only came for the cattle.
It was only last night
That I heard that my love was herding
And though you found me at the perimeter of the cattle fold
Love, let me home as you found me.
I was clambering up
the dykes
And descending the ridges
When a friendly lad met me
And he did not enforce his friendship on me.
Though you were to give me cattle and sheep
Though you were to give me tethered horses
Though you were to give me that and men
Love, let me home as you found me.
My mother and father will chastise you
My clan and my relatives will chastise you
But my three brothers will kill you
If I don’t return home as I came.
My mother promised me a gown
Decorated with the newest of ribbons
And she promised me a new plaid
If I return home the way you found me.

I think it is in your DNA to love Scotland if some of your ancestors are from there. Been there once and visited places which I later discovered to be places where some of my ancestors were born in the 1600's. I am from South Africa too but can't immigrate to Scotland .

Perhaps teach your children the the Irish language is the heritage of the Gaelic spoken in Scotland. That the Scots dialect is from Northumberland. I hate how Scotland would rather say Celtic heritage rather than acknowledge its Irish heritage in the highlands and it’s English heritage in the lowlands

This is a story about a young girl who's wandering brings her to meet a water-fey (similar to a kelpie, which is a magical shape shifting creature that may resemble a horse with long black aquatic 'kelp-like' hair -- however a kelpie is found in streams and rivers, whereas this is found in deep lochs or the sea itself). Typically these will coax unwary travelers to ride upon them, until they see or even smell the water. Then the rider is stuck fast and will be dragged into the depths and drowned. When the human has drowned, the each uisge will devour them violently. The girl in the song is pleading for this creature to allow her to go home unharmed and is saying, as is common to the stories that if she is killed that her brothers will avenge her death upon the creature.

Rachael Lamothe, you can start researching. Lamothe is French in origin but it may also be your married name. :) You could just do a dna test. I just saw a news report the other day that said Ancestry.com and another one(can't remember, sorry) had the best results. There's a good chance that you could have Irish blood as so many Irish immigrated to the US during the potato famine. I'm 5th generation Australian but so many Irish immigrated here that I'm still full-blood Irish. Ireland is my spiritual land. I hope you find joy in your quest.

Though I am very much South Asian in appearance, I’m actually of mixed Indian and Irish lineage, with my mother being the Irish one and my dad Indian. My mother’s maiden surname was McCarthy. She passed away of Multiple Sclerosis in 2019. Whenever I come across beautiful Celtic music like this it helps me to feel connected to her again in some small way May the earth be soft under you when you rest upon it, Mamma 💝

Ive never been but I have been pulled and fascinated in all areas. I even took irish dance growing up. 🤭 it definitely feels like a home I have never been.

When I hear this kind of music it touches my soul like nothing else. I feel a connection to it and feelings of ages gone. I am not a spiritual person, and now live far from my birthplace of the UK, but this kind of music somehow awakens in my heart feelings of ages gone and makes me long for a home that's was Britain hundreds of years ago... and makes me think that perhaps we do have past lives.

Before I did my ancestry, I had always felt drawn to Scottish, Irish and English songs, legends, music, etc. It was almost an obsession. Now, I discovered that I indeed have roots in the early Normans who settled in the areas above. Maybe it isn't past lives, but wonder if its possible that somehow our brains retain some type of 'longing' from the past. I know elephants can pass down through generations trails to water even if it hasn't been used in a generation or two. Whose to say............................

Is it just me or does this seem like something that touches the soul. You feel instantly for the singer. Then you find out what she is singing about and the empathy... Let her return home to her mother the same way you found her. "Love let me home as you found me." For if you don't the wrath that is to come... the wrath that is to come. Defend the innocent and come to the aid of those in peril!

This is actually Scottish Gaelic, a very close cousin to Irish Gaeilge. Both languages are Celtic. Most people mistakenly refer to the native irish language as Gaelic. This term should only be referred to the native scottish language. Their language is called Scottish Gaelic. The native Irish language is known as Gaeilge pronounced GALE-GEH .

It is my dream to visit Scotland with such beautiful lands, music and history, to take my wife to see the lands of her heritage. I myself even have a small part of this heritage in me ( one of 7 different in my bloodline), but feel compelled by the music, language and lands. I may be American, having served my country with pride, love, and loyalty but feel drawn to Scotland. Hard to explain.

I just woke from a long complicated beautiful Gaelic fairylike dream with music, beautiful music and singing. The only line in English I can remember although I knew the songs in my dream and could sing them, was "give us time together". It was a song sung by all the people while, in this case a girl, danced blind folded in the middle of a mixed group of happy laughing men and women while she was guided gently back and forth in the circle. It felt like the idea was to guide her to her true love before the song ended. When it ended at what was obviously the wrong person there was cheers and laughter. Amid laughter and funny catcalls the singing started again. I could see who she intended, someone I can only call a huge rough looking but handsome and happy man with long tangled red curls. I saw him through a window with no glass while singing the previous song and turned to watch him through a wide doorway as the other song started. I caught his eye and I felt his interest but the other song started and I was inside a fairy house with people between us and she was twirling then moment felt lost. I woke feeling sad and poignant. Give Us Time Together. Does anyone know a song with that line or was it just a love dream? I told my dream with details so I don't forget them when the day starts. I can only wish that we could all find the happiness I felt in the dream.
