13. SOUNDBITE (English) Father Justin, monastery librarian:
"The first monks came here the end of the third, the beginning of the fourth century. They came here because this was a harsh desert. It provided them with the silence and the austerity that they were looking for to devote their lives to prayer and fasting. But this is also the place where God appeared to Moses, first at the bush that burned without being consumed, and then at the peak of Sinai where God gave Moses the ten commandments."

"The monastery has never been destroyed and never been abandoned in all of its history, and through the years many manuscripts were written here, many manuscripts were brought here. The community has been predominantly Greek throughout its history, but it is also been the goal of pilgrims from all over the world and that is reflected in the library. We have manuscripts in eleven different languages. The five largest categories are Greek, Arabic, Syriac, Georgian, and Slavonic. No other monastery library has manuscripts in so many different languages."
20. Various of Father Justin looking at manuscripts and books
21. SOUNDBITE (English) Father Justin, monastery librarian:

We flew in just a couple of days ago, we immediately came here right away, and we thought it would be very special to tour the monastery, to hike Gebal Musa (Moses mountain). We saw the sunset last night, we walked down, it was almost a full moon. It's awesome."
30. Mid of the monastery flag
31. SOUNDBITE (English) Christine Ballinger, American visitor:
"Last night we climbed the mountain and watched the sunset and today we were in the monastery, and we also got to meet with one of the fathers and learn about the library and all of the sacred manuscripts, and I have to say that was probably one of my favourite parts."
32. Various of bell tower

LEADIN:

The place that has the oldest Bible, the Codex Siniacticus, from the 3rd century, has also been continuously occupied by Christians who still worship, pray, and live as those before them must go cross-eyed when a Protestant/Non-denominational evangelical tells them they've interpreted the Scriptures wrong...

It is interesting to see the transformation of the Monastery into a modern Library with books neatly arranged on shelves and in climate controlled and protected rooms.. In the days of Tischendorf (1840) and even the days of the Smyth Twins (1896) , books were askew and helter-skelter all over the place. The transformation into a modern library should be worth a video itself. And obviously, it begs the question: where did the books come from in the first place?
