Another of the early BBC7 programmes, this reading by Philip Madoc was originally broadcast in four episodes (the same format as the Roger Allam reading of Blackwood's The Willows, which I've also uploaded). Fans of H.P. Lovecraft will likely find Ancient Sorceries intriguing on account of its evident influence on a certain famous Lovecraft tale - but I'll say no more...
MYSTERIOUS MAGPIE is a channel devoted to ghost and horror stories on British radio, and to dark tales of every kind. I have another channel, MYSTICAL MAGPIE, which is all about stories of fantasy, mythology, and adventure: / @mysticalmagpie-wo5fn
If you're interested to know more about the century-long history of ghost and horror stories broadcast at Christmas on British television and radio, you might like to check out HOLLY WRAITHS (and its companion volume HOLLY TERRORS), an A-Z guide available in paperback and ebook from Amazon and Lulu.com.

Mr. Madoc gives us a reading of Blackwood that yields the most evocative imagery I've ever heard with Blackwood or anyone else.

He was one of the great voices... I was lucky enough to see him on stage once. Weirdly, Alan Rickman was in the audience that evening but while all of my schoolfriends were excited that Alan Rickman was setting opposite us, I was way more thrilled that Madoc was on the stage...

Lucky man and, might I add, discerning. Now to search for any other readings. Do you know if he narrated anymore Blackwood? Or authors of the similar ilk? TIA 🦉

@@TheShadowfakx As it happens I already uploaded a performance of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner that Madoc was part of... I don't know if I have any others that I'm likely to be posting. but he did perform a lot of audiobooks and that included Alan Garner's dark fantasies eg The Weirdstone of Brisingamen. Depending on your taste you might be interested to know that he also played Brother Cadfael in three adaptations of the Ellis Peters novels (mediaeval whodunnits, later made for television with Derek Jacobi).

Well said !! I wonder if you ever had the pleasure of hearing the magnificent voice of Alan Howard ? Not so well known by TV audiences but a Giant of Theatre . Many years with the RSC .
