Great video brought back loads of memories. I first visited the site in the late 1970s when there was an Oxford team there. Ground level was much higher (you can see the level stain on the Taula). I even wrote an article about the visit for the Blackpool Evening Gazette! Went again on my honeymoon in 1993 when it looked much more like in your video. 😀

What springs to mind with this circular structure is that it is designed as a building much like the yurt, with the central pillar being there to support the roof as are the taller uprights around the perimeter.

No evidence that you're right but it's a good idea that maybe needs some attention. Shouldn't there be some sort of grooves or rings to attach the carp or ceiling?

I was lucky enough to travel to Menorca and do field work as a student at Torre D'en Galmés, a while ago, before i'd heard of Gobleki Tepe. But as soon as I saw GT i thought, those look like Taliots.

I was due to go there again this year we go there every year . I have visited nearly every site there in menorca most several times , I have come to the conclusion that a lot of these sites are much much older the site at st Agusti near Santa Thomas is a site where the blocks in the taliots are huge and I believe this site to be very old the blocks are huge but very weathered also a polygonal wall there very weathered but if you look carefully you can see how it fitted together quite tight , the taula enclosure there has been disturbed by farming , then you have the site at de dalt huge taula there which I think is older than Torabla den salort it is more weathered but very huge , then you have the Cyclopean wall at son catlar. Huge megalithic blocks well weathered but still very impressive and the shear size of them , the list goes on in menorca it is megalithic heaven I love the place but as I said before for me a lot of it is much older than stated , also look out there for the Neolithic walls they are everywhere some very impressive.great video Hugh I’m itching to get back there .the necropolis at cala moral is very impressive to , and how can I forget my favourite Torre den galmes.

horns are often a depiction of a connection between earth and heaven.. like antennas, ancient Europe churches have vertical carvings of deer, antlers down, to show a connection between earth and heaven. even our classic view of the Ark of the covenant could be considered a box with horns on top.

I cannot help but think of “Altar” when I see these Tau towers .. as in “al-TAR”. As in Taurus The BULL. The ancient altars had horns on either end . Also let’s think about the other pieces of this ancient past of ours.. where during the reign of Ramses II the Israelites/Hebrew who awaited Moses at the foot of the great mountain Sinai build a GOLDEN Bull (Taurus) to worship. This was because the Pharaohs claim that they were descended from gods (fallen angels) from the constellation Taurus and the Pleadies . (For a pretty accurate discrimination of why, take a look at a movie called “Stargate, in 1994 towards the end when you’ll understand more than you realize. The truth is right in our faces but our focus is always being shifted to fear based propaganda.

The similarity to G. T. is astounding, Hugh, great find! Now we have to ask ourselves, "Have we got these dates right, or have we jumped to some conclusions because of our poor conditioned minds and incredulity?" I think this must be reviewed.

They are Iron Age (he says some are as old as 2000 BCE but the reference I have from the 1980s is that the Talayotic period only begins in the Late Bronze Age c. 1300 BCE), nothing points to much earlier dates. Also the Balearic islands were first settled only with the arrival of the Neolithic, some 7500 years ago (those Cardium Pottery people were the first real sailors of the Mediterranean and also their descendants of the European Atlantic shores).

I see that Torralba means "white tower". Could it instead mean "white bull"? If the pillars were symbolic bulls, did the word for "bull" and "tower" get conflated?
@LuisAldamiz
@LuisAldamiz 3 жыл бұрын
The pillar structure is traditionally called "taula", which means "table". Toro and torre do not get confused, r vs rr are very distinctive, two clearly distinct phonemes (probably not so much in English, whose "r" sounds are different but in Catalan, Spanish, Basque or even Italian there's no possible confusion: tap and thrill are not the same, certainly not before vowel).

Why does everything ancient have to be bulls and overly simplified animal representations? Why couldn’t it be a scientific instrument or have to do with mathematics?
@LuisAldamiz
@LuisAldamiz 3 жыл бұрын
Ditto. Or just a ver schematic athropomorphic idol. I never read any notion that it had to do with bulls. The name of the megalith is "taula", meaning "table". There were some bull-related beliefs in Southern Iberia but this is a rather isolated distinctive group.
