@@TheErnieforss that's what I was wondering. I have Elder Sign and like it a lot. I guess the difference is this is competitive, while Elder Sign is co-op.

This review was begging for a compare and contrast with Elder Sign.

Well... it's not like saying "I have the Eldritch Yahtzee title" means all games using the dice-matching mechanic are the same, or even similar. Any more than all games are the same that use cards. I like Elder Sign, but this game is intriguing and I'll probably buy it when it appears at my local game store.

@@ronaldbell7429 Fair point. I suppose it initially seemed like a niche combination of mechanics and theme. On further reflection, the Cthulu theme is so widespread it can, and already does, contain more than it's fair share of games with similar mechanics.

This one is pretty easy to learn at the table.

It's a thing these game reviewers do seem always to do. It annoyed me in the beginning, because I wanted to look at the game's uniqueness, while saying a game is Yahtzee-like or Dominion-like makes them sound like everything is just a reskin of a handful of other games. That in turn pushes developers into incorporating novel mechanics that might in practice be annoying, clunky, or just plain nonsensical, just to catch the attention of the game reviewers. (Memoir '44, I'm looking at you) There's pros as well, though. By "yahtzee'esk", they mean throwing a pile of dice, then trying to match expected patterns with the opportunity to reroll some or all of them. And though Elder Sign has more to it, that comparison gives you an overall glimpse at what the gameplay is like, and potentially gives you a chance to think "oh I hate that mechanic" or "I love those types of games." More importantly to someone who has to learn hundreds of games (like these reviewers), it gives them a leg up in learning to play. So that's probably worthwhile. Where it really makes me angry sometimes, though, is when a reviewer dings a game because it's not enough different from some other game (to THEM), and they say "You shouldn't buy this because it's too similar to GAME X. Everybody is like me and already owns every game, and this is not different enough. It's just a duplicated purchase." Some of us (shockingly) don't own that other game, often because the theme or the artwork or whatever didn't appeal to us, or maybe just because we hadn't ever really considered buying it.

Silly sidenote: the word ending is -esque (from Norman/French/Latin derived words) (I’m a teacher; I can’t help it. Sorry!)

@@prufrock1977 It's not a silly point. In my own replies I'm just using his spelling to keep from getting side-tracked. If I had written it myself, I'd have used your spelling. I've always assumed it's French rather than Latin, because it contains so many non-pronounced letters ;) Latin has very little of that. I used to say English didn't have much of that, until I saw English town names, I still think French is worse.
