"And Can it Be?" performed by Organist Scott Fredericks and Pianist Christian Keller at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Hanover, PA. The organ is 7th largest in the world with almost 15,000 pipes, and is a distinctive emblem in the music world.
This rendition was based on Samuel Metzger's arrangement of Sagina, but with the capabilities of Scott and the options at his fingertips, the orchestrating and embellishments were all him. The piano part was also improvised.
Scott Fredericks studied music at Westminster Choir College at Princeton, and The Royal School of Church Music in England.
Christian Keller is a senior at Littlestown High School and will be studying music at the Sunderman Conservatory at Gettysburg College.
And can it be that I should gain
An interest in the Savior’s blood?
Died He for me, who caused His pain?
For me, who Him to death pursued?
Amazing love! how can it be
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?
He left His Father’s throne above,
So free, so infinite His grace;
Emptied Himself of all but love,
And bled for Adam’s helpless race:
’Tis mercy all, immense and free;
For, O my God, it found out me.
Amazing love! how can it be
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?
Long my imprisoned spirit lay
Fast bound in sin and nature’s night;
Thine eye diffused a quickening ray,
I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;
My chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.
Amazing love! how can it be
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?
No condemnation now I dread;
Jesus, and all in Him, is mine!
Alive in Him, my living Head,
And clothed in righteousness Divine,
Bold I approach the eternal throne,
And claim the crown, through Christ my own.
Amazing love! how can it be
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?

Our church like so many has moved from choir to praise music. While I understand that young people need a "fresh" approach to worship as a Baby Boomer I miss the powerful offertories of our youth. This exceptional playing of And Can It Be reminds me of days gone by.

Honestly, as a millennial, I wouldn’t mind having the organ back in churches. At least once in a while. I love the old and the new. Having the full orchestra with the piano and organ as well is incredibly beautiful. I grew up in a musical family. I used to love listening to my grandma and mom play piano together. For a while my mom had an organ and played that as well. Both my grandma and mom played by ear and I’m the one of my generation who inherited the gift from them. I played with my mom a lot. I never had lessons other than a few months of them as a kid. I can only play by ear. Now I’m trying hard to enhance the playing and teaching myself more. I regret it deeply, not taking lessons or pursuing music more. My grandma passed when I was a teenager and my mom passed suddenly a few months ago. I still lived with her and found her unresponsive. It’s been so hard and painful but playing music again has helped.

I'm almost 30 and I'm there with you. I prefer hymns over this new cookie cutter praise music. I go to a bible church and we sing 95% hymns, I wish that he had a pipe organ though.

Over the last 7 years of my life, I’ve found a lot of contemporary music to be void of biblical truth. This is actually one of my favorite songs. I grew up on contemporary music. I thought hymns were old and worn out… yet this hymn resonates with me. I don’t really listen to many contemporary songs anymore. I’m at the tailing end of the millennial generation, so I don’t think this is just a generational thing. There has been some evidence that millennials and gen z are actually choosing the more traditional churches over the contemporary. Our congregation is more traditional and has ballooned to 700 members (mostly young families and college students)! As far as the organ goes, I’d love to have one. Our church is in an older building that doesn’t have a pipe organ. I know the music director and I know if he had the choice, we’d have one!

Absolutely incredible! Just so impressive! A large, powerful 4 manual pipe organ and a grand piano together playing a very beautiful hymn! How in the world can a person think an electric keyboard and a guitar is better? Y’all, we just had us some church!

Yes I was raised from 1937 to 1960 singing with a wonderful pipe organ and congregational singing of the old hymns & Psalms,and that is why I am blessed to play the organ in my home several times a week and loved modulating from different keys as I play by ear.And my dad was a gifted organist.I have one of the original hymnals from my church in Michigan,and now live in Tennessee.PRAISE BE TO GOD.

Wow that was incredible!! I don’t understand why my generation doesn’t enjoy the organ as much anymore. I mean this was just incredible! I love this old hymn and it sounds so majestic with both the piano and the organ together. I’m still in my 30s and have a very hard time finding friends my age enjoy this. I often went to concerts with my mom because she had a love for music just as much. Sadly she passed unexpectedly this year. I feel very alone.

It’s in my hymnbook in G which does go a bit high (I note the key change here). I’ve now developed introductions to all my hymns that avoid any pauses or rallentandos; it works a dream and no loss of pace; everyone starts singing together. Search The Complete Hymn.

The younger generation who write forgettable Christian music noways of course include meaningful words, but rarely have any idea about meaningful "music", which sets this and other older beautiful worship songs worlds apart.

Many churches that have abandoned the hymns of the faith do so thinking they will attract the unchurched but it rarely does. What does happen is that many of us older worshipers feel our Christian Heritage has been taken from us. My church leadership made the arbitrary decision to switch from hymns to praise music and within months our typical Sunday attendance of 700+ dropped to less then 150. Sad.

@@thomas-xj1hs not sure. I know Sam Metzger has it in F in one of his books. Also Noel Rawsthorne books have reharmonies, usually in multiple different keys to accommodate to different types of hymnals. Under “Sagina,” there may be one in F
