And in the End It Was Earth
By Roland Barrett
Item: 00-38380
Series: Belwin Symphonic Band
Category: Concert Band
Format: Conductor Score & Parts
Level: 4 (Medium)
Inspired by the Native American proverb, "We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children." Roland Barrett has scored this original composition to musically reflect that sentiment conveying the inherent beauty, majesty, and grandeur of planet Earth. Combining fluid moving melodic components with energetic and driving rhythmic pulse, the work will capture the imagination of all. (5:30) This title is available in SmartMusic.

This is an extremely beautiful piece, though with how difficult it is, I'm quite surprised at the ending.

I have never seen a composer quite as good as Barrett at writing bassoon parts. Like all the bassoon parts I see are so lacking in structure or difficulty or just plain understanding of the bassoon and it’s ability. Roland Barrett, however, just seems to be able to get a great understanding of every instrument. I presume the bassoon was his starting/favorite instrument. Like he shows a clear understanding of every instrument but he sure knows how to write bassoon parts, that’s for sure.

Ohoh, the vibraphone at the M. 83 should play the A flat. What a pity that the Ob. plays so well.

another person who can't write for low woodwinds, especially bari sax. The lower notes of the instrument, like E, D C B-flat are VERY easy to play and can add a lot of low presence to a band. This piece has them constantly jumping octaves for no reason, and then gives them the low notes 4 measures later. As usual, it was probably a copy-paste job, because bari sax is used to being ignored by composers and arrangers. :-(

Yes, it always amazes me that most band composers write almost exclusively for band but never figure out how to write decent orchestrations

BariSaxGuy yea I play Bari sax and we have by far the worst parts. For example the is a part where all off the low reeds are playing this almost solo melody, and it’s in ques. And it makes no sense because are lowreeds are decent and we have good sound.

Hi! Future band composer. Mind giving me some examples of pieces that you think has good low woodwind writing? My orchestration could definitely use some work.

Another thing that composers do that bothers me is they assume that the Bari has a Low A extension

Confused at measure 71 (1:57) why only the saxophones have a dynamic at the end of the phrase
@johnnytheyoungmaestro
@johnnytheyoungmaestro Жыл бұрын
It could possibly be how the instruments blend. Sometimes, when there's a louder dynamic, some instruments are left to be a bit quieter, as to not overpower the others. But I could be wrong. That's just how I have experienced it, especially for writing concert band works. The saxophone is harder to write for, since it tends to, as I said, overpower. 🤷‍♂️

if you look, all the other instruments have more notes in the next few measures which start out at ff while saxes end at measure 71 so that's where they reach ff

It could just be so that it's easier for the musicians to understand. A lot of composers do that.
