Ooooh what's that smell? We're not sure, but we know the demo must go on with our 1923 Spanish Bungalow. Kitchen floor tear-up and a simple priming project takes a turn for the worst...Join us as we continue to restore, fix, and replace pieces of our home.

Have a thought on the odor(s) you have going on in the house. In addition to the moisture and mold remediation you have been doing, try plain old soap and water. When I purchased my older home, it had been unoccupied and closed up for two years. Yes, it was dusty and dirty, but the homeowners were heavy smokers and had a small dog. Before painting anything, I washed everything. Miles of baseboards and window trim (I was able to save the original varnished trim). More walls than I care to remember; every door, window pane and ceiling fixture....In addition to all of that, I spent more than 40 hours washing the original 1960's galley style kitchen cabinets. After every 2-door set, I had to change out the wash water. Once all the basic cleaning was finished, then I painted. The air quality inside improved dramatically. Even if you are going to refinish the floors, the debris currently there can hold spore and other odors. Kudos on all of the work you have done so far, it is making a visible difference.🙂

That’s a great thought! We’ve scrubbed everything down multiple times. We’re pretty sure the previous owner was a smoker too and we know she had large dogs. We’re hoping the primer, paint, and refinishing the floors will take care of any residual smell that’s left 🤞🤞🤞

Wonder if Ms. Marie smoked or had frequent vistors that did? That might be why the walls are yellowed and part of the smell, just a thought.

We definitely think she did considering the number of ashtrays and pipes we found in the house.

I am so enamored of the two of you. I can relate on many of your projects but certainly not the magnitude. My husband and I worked in a late 1800’s Victorian beauty with lots of gingerbread, Like you, we did most of the work ourselves but we were young, stupid, and had no money. We learned a great deal along the way and did one room at a time not to get overwhelmed. We are now in a new house but there was NOTHING like the old girl dressed in her finest Christmas attire. We both miss those days. However, we moved on to a new chapter in our lives and wouldn’t change the old one or the present. BTW, our house was on two different Christmas tours and she magnificent.🎄

I don't know if you saw a post a while back, or a suggestion! Pour vanilla flavoring in you paint, and stir it in! It helps with odors on the wall! That is what Nicole Curtis does on Rehab Addict! Good luck!🙂

Because of your animal issue ,the smell may be in your insulation. I really would take out all plaster and install drywall. But make sure you have no plumbing or roof leaks still. I think it's sweet you want to keep original plaster. But not practical. Try damp rid around the home to help with smells.
@CicadaAndCo

Great idea thanks. We replaced plaster in some areas of the house where it was practical to and repaired it in other areas where that made the most sense for our project 👍

What does it smell like ? Musty Wet Mud ? = Mold Do you have a raised foundation ? If so, check for moisture under the house, as it could be mold there.
