10 жыл бұрын

*Anderson Cooper took on Arizona state senator Al Melvin Monday night over the state's proposed legislation to allow businesses to exercise their religious freedom to discriminate against LGBT citizens. Melvin insisted, "It's nothing more and nothing less than protecting religious freedom in our state." Cooper noted how Arizona doesn't expressly prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, and grilled Melvin on why, then, they would need to reaffirm a right that isn't under threat in the state in the first place...* Cooper went on to grill Melvin who couldn't come up with a good answer. The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down.

Why is the PRIMARY anti-gay argument "because the Bible says so?" Last time I checked, our country is SPECIFICALLY NOT a Christian nation. There's something called separation of church and state... Therefore reasons citing the Bible should not be a valid political reason.. How does the fact that someone is homosexual impede their ability to be a person?? This is coming from a raised (and practicing) Catholic. How hard is it to not care whether or not someone enjoys the company of a man or woman...? The fact someone is homosexual should not be such an issue in your OWN LIVES. It's like having a random person you don't know dictate your private romantic life...

0hsnappl3s I love this statement: "How hard is it to not care whether or not someone enjoys the company of a man or woman...?" As a matter of fact, as a born and bred Canadian I feel it is my God given right not to care what is taking place in someone else's bedroom. This issue boils down to the question of whether or not we want to live in a free society where our only concerns about the behavior of our neighbors and fellow citizens should be that they are not harmful to us or detrimental to the well being of society. Legislation supporting an objection to the sexual orientation of others that can only be learned through religious indoctrination, serves no valid purpose in maintaining the ideals of a free society. On the contrary, it serves only to make gays the first group on the legal discrimination list. Which group is next? ....Atheists? .....Catholics? .....Wiccans?

@TheDeadTheories
@TheDeadTheories 9 жыл бұрын
Richard Wiswell Well, what the states allow and disallow is, and should remain, separate from that of the government. It's in our constitution, to provide a normalcy to the laws of our country. You ever notice how we have stopped using that, and now our lives are thrown into turmoil every time congress passes a law we don't agree with. And, congress shouldn't be allowed to come in and force a state to overturn their state laws. The way it was supposed to work: Congress passes general laws that set the overtone of the nation. Each state passes and ratifies it's own "tweaks" to further direct the overtone of their own state. If a citizen of the United States doesn't agree with a state's laws, they find one in which they do, or they vote against that law. Yes, it really is THAT simple, folks. It's to provide a constant. This part of the constitution allows for blue states AND red states so that both can have their cake and not destroy each other's rights. But, neither side wants to give the other their freedoms. Liberals get bent out of shape if a conservative state doesn't want to allow illegals or gay marriage, and conservatives get their colon in twist-knot if a liberal state wants to ban prayer and guns. Why can't we let a liberal state be a liberal state, and a conservative state be a conservative state?
@MrGoatflakes
@MrGoatflakes 9 жыл бұрын
TheDeadTheories no, you are simply wrong. The constitution says in the tenth amendment that: "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.". *Powers not delegated or prohibited* by the constitution. Not whatever the fuck they want. So if a statue or even state constitution contradicts the constitution of the United States of America, then it should be struck down. I find it quite amazing how consistently you conservatives say that measures intended to guarantee individual rights are some how infringing on the rights of people that object to some people having those rights. It's like you think that people should have the right to oppress and bully people they don't like or that offend their religious sensibilities. Finally I would like to address this: _if a liberal state wants to ban prayer_. This is a straw man argument. No state wants to do this, and in any case it is expressly a federal matter because is deals with the establishment clause of the constitution of the United States of America, to wit _"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;" _ This has been interpreted by the supreme court as disallowing _mandated_ prayer in a government setting. This is why in public schools teachers are not allowed to lead a pray which the students are required to participate in, because that would be establishing an official religion, something which is specifically prohibited by this clause. Later rulings have allowed official prayer even in a government setting, as long it was not a mandatory requirement. Additionally a prayer is always spoken before the opening of both houses of the federal government.

@@swlk9996 I'm atheist, I've been a witness in court and had to swear on it. It doesn't matter about inauguration or court, our governing rights in the constitution says religion is cool to practice if no harm comes. Religion can try as it might, it will never rule or legislate in America. And, all that are so religious and only practice a few things in the old testament, are fake religious persons. If they're not adhering to all laws in the old testament, they lose their moral high ground.

Sha Voz it's a bull shit argument perpetuated by haters. Your Bible is full of ridiculous stories, most of which you agree are ridiculous. Why else would you pick a handful of "rules" while ignoring almost all of the others. Your God is the most pathetic monster ever invented by man. Those of us who actually READ the entire text of the "so called" Word of God are much more likely NOT to believe any of it. It's a matter of intelligence and common sense. Religious people usually have a lot less of those valuable traits. - If I was filled with God delusions, I'd keep it to myself, because it's clearly a sign of mental inferiority. To be a genuinely decent human being, all you have to do is actually BE that genuinely decent human being. Faith in your bull shit God adds NOTHING of value. We will both die and stay dead (like all living things). I embrace my mortality, while you fear yours. What does that change? NOTHING. Those are the facts. Too bad you're too self-absorbed and "holy" to get it. Not my problem.

crackcorn0404 - random fun fact that your comment made me think of, this is actually a real thing. It's called synesthesia and occurs when the brain's senses are linked. Touch, smell, flavour, sight, colour, taste, words, sounds, pain, music, personalities, and a few other things can stimulate another. For example, touching something might create a taste, or letters might have colour or flavour. Some see auras or personalities as having colour or see their thoughts on a ticker-tape out in front of them, or feel music on their skin. One person might taste or smell pain or see vivid shapes and colours around them while eating food. Colours or sights may have a sound. So, sometimes the colour brown may smell like 9. Synesthesia is not a disorder. It's classified as a condition, but is usually just a trait. I’ve talked to a lot of people with synesthesia and have encountered many different types; people who hear and taste words, people who their numbers and letters have colour and personalities, people who see colour and shapes in the air when eating food, people who see auras around people, people who have colours for months, days, years, and have their calendar in a circle around them, people who see the words they say, hear, and think out in front of them on a ticker-tape, people who see sounds and music as colours and shapes, people who see their pain as colours and shapes, people who see whatever they smell as a colour, people who feel sensations on their skin when hearing something, people who taste when they see certain objects, and more. :)

You see that’s like being born heterosexual and wanting to sleep with every girl you see, “ EVERYONE of them” and saying “Well God made me this way, a swinger” and It’s Gods fault I’m like this” and now I have to sleep with every girl that comes down my path! Nice try……… As a heterosexual Christian. I have rules too in the Bible to follow as well. It’s not easy for us either, but rules are RULES... none the less. So when I talk to someone for the 1st. time who is in a gay lifestyle. As a Christian I really don’t care about their gay lifestyle!! Really, that’s Right !!! I ask them, “Do you keep ? The Ten Commandments! “Have you lied?” “Have you stolen something that wasn’t yours?” “Have you taken GODS name in vain (by saying G-Damn it ) that’s blasphemy. Exodus 20:12.” “Have you honored your Dad and Mom……Yes..? No..? So with that in mind…. look at it this way…. That’s like being dragged into court for the- crimes of ( Rape, Murder, and Drug pedaling ) and as you’re standing there before a judge of the law, in that courtroom, for these very very Bad crimes and the bailiff says to the judge, “Your Honor, look here this man also has some outstanding parking tickets… Sir you need to throw the book at him today, he’s a BAD man!” See because if a person is living in a homosexual lifestyle that’s just icing on the cake of SIN…. There Lying, stealing, and blasphemy, not respecting there Mom and Dad…. (And that’s only four of ) Ten Commandments broken, that alone will get them right into HELL.! So on the day of judgment, they are Really In Big Trouble and really need Jesus more than you’re telling them! So forget the Icing and Go after the cake of SIN First... like the judge in court did!! And not for the parking tickets…….. Deal with the icing later! So something to think about when talking to others and evangelizing to people about there homosexuality and about Jesus in there life. Thank you my friend for hearing me out and may God bless you as you share with others the word of Jesus, as He has asked us too (Mark 16:15)……. Let it not be said I was silent when needed. Go to the streets and tell others about...JESUS

We have far more important things to worry about. People that have an issue with who someone loves or what they do in the privacy of their own home need to get a life. The conservatives have lost the anti-gay movement. The majority of citizens no longer view homosexuality negatively and a majority agree that gay marriage should be a right. There is no arguing with the numbers. Republicans obsess about small government and the people's vote, but only when it's in their favor. If a majority supports something they're against, somehow it's wrong, or due to liberal propaganda. Get over it, you've lost. This country no longer supports he oppression and bigotry of the right.

+Justin Hopkins Its crazy. Sometimes it seems like the government is all a ploy. Democracy seems like an illusion at times. Like false freedom. Sometimes I think the struggle between democrats and republicans in congress is not as intense as we think. I see some argue but I feel like they slowly give little freedoms here and there to keep us happy. But essentially they are always in the position of power. But then again. Is that just civilization? Are people lazy or hard workers? I think there are lazy people. Disabled(mentally and physical) people also, but I do think everyone desires a purpose and too much free time leaves anyone actually feeling useless. I think it is the job of a society to utilize as many of it's inhabitants, in a safe way, as possible. In a way that can bring together a sense of morale and connectedness. I believe this is the ideal society, but I think many people don't realize that oppression and greed have been a part of civilization and humanity for so long. A chance at this society in the USA has never had an opportunity as opposed to capitalistic and sometimes oligarchic-seeming ones. I think to fix government, we take out big money interests like Sanders is saying. The government is supposed to work for the people, not just the big corporations. Let's face it, this election has brought light on the gap between the wealthiest in our country(the people we all work for when you trace the money back) and the poor. There is not much of an in between. The only way this happens and continues to happen is lack of education. People are misinformed. Think about it. People were genuinely afraid of homosexuals, especially recently when it became a hot topic. The problem is that people who have never had any interactions with homosexuals(or whatever group you want to throw in) is susceptible to start believing it, especially if it matches the opinions of those in their environment and what they see on TV. It's very sad and depressing. Instead of worrying about the issues that will affect them and their kids(if they have any), they are distracted by the trivial issues, partly because of the media exposure. I think the truth is that people are generally engaging human beings but we are urged to be divisive by the people who are in charge. Media is and will probably always be the strongest form of brainwashing. I'm faded btw lol

+Justin Hopkins .... For those claiming America has been anti gay, ignores gay citizens that have been a part of this nation almost from the beginning. If this is meant of a Christian people, Christians do not hate gays, the Christian bible teaches to hate sin, but love the sinner. Does loving a sinner mean to contribute or enable continued sin, only an ignorant or misled person would believe so.

This bill, as they say, promotes religious freedom, not "my particular branch of Christianity" freedom. I think conservatives should really look at the bigger picture here instead of focusing on their own beliefs. If you want "religious freedom" and faith based laws implemented into the government, then that means EVERY religion is a contender. What's the GOP going to say when laws based on Islam, Santeria, Wicca, Judaism, Mormonism, Baha'i and yes, even The Flying Spaghetti Monster make way into the government? Are they going to be all for it even though it's not what THEY personally follow?

***** I don't think it is so much about religion as about blind traditions that seem to cloud the underlying truths upon which the religion is based. The truths about the Christian religion that Christ gave us is unconditional, unselfish love, forgiveness and compassion. This is what Christ is about but those 'Christian' churches that claim to follow Him have twisted His teachings to suit there own agendas. That is why the Christian religion is splintered into so many factions. As for Sen. Melvin, i am appalled but not surprised that someone of his questionable intelligence has found his way into a government position. I have spoken to grade school children who can express themselves more eruditely than this senator. It makes me question the collective intelligence of the electorate who voted for him.

Panthrax Show me your proof. If there is a hell, I believe we make our own as well as that of others. For me, I see Jesus everywhere reflected back in other people. That is my proof that He exists. I have been in this world for sixty years and have encountered many who I would call saints on earth. They are people who tug me gently in a positive direction. Many of these people adhere to no particular faith but are decent positive individuals who are willing to love and care for others unconditionally. That is the message that Christ gave us, whether you believe in Him or not. He gives us the invitation. It is up to each of us to accept it, if we so choose.

All that bill was about is making religious freedom above all else even if it includes discriminating against any and all groups of ppl who dont cohesively blend with whichever religion it is whose 'religious freedom' is being actively protected. Its disgusting, problematic, and despite what the Conservatives & Republicans would like to believe, it is incredibly unamerican to put ones freedom of religion over someones freedom FROM religion. The bronze age, demonstrably untrue facts about equality between races/gender/sexual orientation/age/financial class/etc. is disturbing & thoroughly unamerican, anti democracy and would only be acceptable under a dictatorship. But Republicans want to white wash and rewrite history to fit their narrative. An utterly moronic, unfair and greedy narrative at that!!

Jihad Lee it's not an opinion kind of deal. trust me, the entire gay population isn't lying to you. the millions of gay people on earth did not get together and say. "hey guys, lets play a trick on the straight people and tell them it's not a choice when really it is". nope. pretty much all gay people will tell you that they realized they were gay when they were teenagers, same time everyone else is discovering the opposite sex. Even the ones who were in denial into their 20s or 30s will say they really always knew. try talking to some actual gay people instead of just saying, "hmmm, my opinion i s...." no just ask them!

I'm not religious, but people on here that are do realize that the bible never actually discriminates against sex or a relationship between two consenting adults of the same sex right? It is always in the context of rape and sodomy and things like that. So not actual lgbt couples. People would know that if they actually took the time to read the bible, instead of just being bigots and believing what other people tell you. It is absolutely ridiculous.

Most historians accept that he existed, but the accuracy is very much in doubt. The existence of people during that time era is not going to have much concrete evidence. But I think Pontius Pilate, Jesus, etc. did exist. It doesn't really matter much to me. There might have been a historical Jesus. Maybe there wasn't. Who really knows for sure?

***** I would argue that the STEM fields are actually a more concrete field of study, in that it only deals with what is measureable and observable by means other than simple human perception. Meanwhile, Social Sciences are almost entirely subjective and dictated by philosophical arguments and conjecture. Some hard science happens there but not much. However, in a way you are right...successful STEM professionals are able to see the abstract uses of their concrete science, while successful Social Science Professionals find ways to make their abstract ideas into proof of their concrete biases. Please don't lynch me, because I know there are a few Social Science Professionals who leave their bias at the door and do some really ground breaking work, the problem is that they usually don't get credit for their genius until after they are dead and popular opinion os swayed toward their work.

Id just settle for a law that states that people holding a position, or having family within 1 step(1st cousin, uncle, aunt, etc) that holds a position in a corporate entity should be barred.
