Thanks, Jack. Entertaining, as always. The new Juno DS is pretty versatile. I like the four knob/four slider control section. it lets you do quite a bit of synthy-type things, and could also be used as a controller for computer plugin synths, too.

The parametric eq capabilities are huge, spectrum, enhancement and isolation of frequencies, that's just for starters. I paired in stereo with 2 Yam HS8s mostly for acustic piano sounds. No noise, no hum plays low and very loud, too. Underrated item.

Personally, I love this keyboard. It's very light, (I honestly just carry it like a backpack), has a great range of sounds to start, and a lot of great features. Very easy to work with, and easy to work your way around. I don't usually use the preset layers/patches because I usually have my own that I use, but honestly its a good Keyboard. It does sound different from the speakers, but recorded/mixed it's great.

This synth is actually perfect if you want to play in an industrial band. You can make your own samples and put em in any key, while also controlling the loops for the background rythms and effects like how much chorus, reverb or cut off you want to add or remove. I love this!

Great presentation. So natural and the host actually looks like he's enjoying himself., instead of being a rep from the company. Also, this is the first KZfaq I've found that analyzes the 61 key Juno. Every other one says it talks about the 61 & 88, and only end up playing & talking about the 88. Thank you guys. I wish I was in England. Great accent. Thanks. I've actually played a whole bunch of 61 key synths, and picked this one even though it was almost the lowest priced. Does anybody how the organ patches sound? Maybe for a Hammond B-3 sound?

Now this is what I call a proper synthesizer review, where the reviewer demonstrates things as they really are. "I can't remember any songs.........There's a bloody lot of bells going on here". The thumping noise you heard three-quarters of the way through was not a preset, but was actually the entire marketing department of Roland UK passing out and hitting the floor. In all seriousness, though, the DS is actually a great little keyboard with some high quality sounds and features.

I'm stuck between the Yamaha MX series and this series, is there a disadvantage to the modulator also coming back to default position? I know that the Yamaha MX modulator stays put when moved, but this one looks like it doesn't.
@Jason75913
@Jason75913 2 жыл бұрын
The downside depends on your playing style. Or maybe you can adjust to it? MX doesn't compete with Juno-DS in sound, MX is specialized in being a Cubase AI controller or a practice keyboard. Juno is made for much more, minus being a dedicated Cubase controller. You can always remove the bottom panel and remove the spring on the modulator so it stays put instead like most other keyboards.

You mentioned we might not buy this if we were the main piano player in our band. May I ask why that’s the case? Looking at getting this for our church. Would almost exclusively be used for piano / chords and playing alongside the worship team. The pianos on this board sound so much better than other keyboards with a higher price point. I can’t see why this wouldn’t fit our needs?

Great review! I’m so tired of synth reviews spending 90% of the video on piano sounds. If I wanted a piano, I’d buy a piano. Sure, we all want our synths to have a decent piano sound, but that’s NOT what we buy them for. I’m probably still going to get a Yamaha MODX7, but this synth is enticing, especially there isn’t a MODX7 that I can try, within 100 miles of me. I’m sure that I’m going to like it, but I prefer to try things, before I buy them. I can order the MODX7, but if I don’t like it, I have to pay shipping both ways and a 20% restocking charge. The more I think about it, I may just go to my music store, today, to try this synth. Thanks again!

Some keyboardists have no idea that digital pianos like Roland FP-30X and Yamaha P-125 murder these synth keyboards at piano, even MODX and Montage fall behind. But traditionally, they get workstationk(-ish) keyboards as portable digital pianos only began to surpass these in recent years. Juno-DS88 costs more than the pianos I mentioned, and salesmen get more commission for selling bigger ticket items, so that may not be helping, either.

@Jason75913
@Jason75913 2 жыл бұрын
This has far more than the G, and Roland provides Axial downloadable expansions for free. EXP-02 has the most sounds of them all, EXP-04 introduces a piano patch better than even the SuperNatural pianos on the Integra-7 and FA-08 ("PremierGrand"). EXP-06 is loaded by default. It does everything the G does but better, except sequencing. There is an 8-part loop sequencer, but you can't do a long, continuous song with more than 8 parts like on the G, but if you split your song into looping sections, you'll be just fine (verse, pre-chorus, chorus, etc.). No MIDI output from the sequencer, though, and no custom arpeggio patterns like on the G. You'll have to step up to the Juno-G's current successor, the FA, if you want more. The Juno-DS actually isn't a replacement for the Juno-G, despite the name. FA offers much more than the G, including some limited SP-404-like sampling capability and per-part EQ and insert FX for all its 16 parts. It's a phenomenal beast.

What we really need is a top view series of how to edit these keyboards and other gear. They make and sell them, but it's difficult trying to find the straight path to do simple things like adding a Leslie sound to an organ on the DS-88 and maybe controlling the speed of the Leslie sound with a controller pedal. Roland makes a lot of exceptional gear. They always have, but why at this point in history do they not have a detailed series of short videos showing us how to use these things. Help us cut to the chase because WE WANT TO MAKE MUSIC, not read manuals and learn how to program unfriendly user interfaces!

The manuals are simple. Follow the directions if your brain is trying to trick you otherwise, you'll get the hang of it in no time. If you want unfriendly interfaces, go find an old "General Music" keyboard, Yamaha MOXF8, Korg Wavestation, or an old Roland D-50, just to name a few.

@@jml19221 Thank you for the fast reply! Here are the questions: Can you transition smoothly between favorites? Let's say I'm on one favorite that has 3 sounds layered. If I'm letting the notes ring out on my sustain pedal and switch to another favourite with different sounds, will the notes held by the sustain cut off? Or will they ring until I play notes on the new favourite. Basically can I change favourites with no sound cut off or drop out? Can you use user edited patches in a performance as a layer? If for example I took a piano, added some reverb and a few other effects and save that as a patch, can I then call up that patch to be used in a performance? If I have a performance with 3 layers for example, can I adjust the individual fx and volume of each layer in the performance, and then when I write it will it save all the edited parameters of each layer? What sustain pedal would you recommend for the Juno-DS61? Can you name performances? So that you can see the name of a performance if you register it as a favourite and select it? Thanks so much.

Danish Pete and Jack should do some videos together, and not just 30 seconds of dancing to a keyboard demo :-)

i would recommend the Roland RD 300NX for a stage piano. Never buy a Casio if youre not a beginner anymore

Hey guys, love this series. I'm a sax player and i've been thinking about taking up the keyboard/piano to further study harmony and to work on composition. I'd love to see a series going over the most popular beginner digital pianos in different price ranges because I'm totally lost at sea picking one here.

Doesn't look like a massive upgrade from the Di. But great nevertheless. Awesome review. Really fun watching.

Wutipong Wongsakuldej is there any difference to our Juno Di besides a name change and less knobs

@@Backjack31 & Wutipong Wongsakuldej YES - there's a pretty big diff. I traded a Di for this DS and it was well worth it. Lots of new sounds. AND you can download free EXPANSION Packs from axial.roland.com that give you a whole other synth inside. PLUS you can now load YOUR OWN SAMPLES and MULTISAMPLES (a computer is needed - no 'built-in' Sampling.) ALL are NEW in the DS. PLUS the DS *will* completely 'become' your Di, with a RESTORE from Di Utility. And THEN you can go about folding in all the new features, starting with all the Performances and Patches and Favorites that you worked hard on the Di to program! Plus cool Auto-Tune on the Mic input. No D-Beam, (not really missed) BUT instead you have a pretty cool Mini-Pattern-Sequencer and Triggering Sample Pads. Also, a NEW 2nd Pedal INPUT - for a Controller pedal, which the Di didn't have. I would say, GO FOR IT. Oh I forgot - the SLIDERS are REALLY helpful. It seemed like Captain Jack was just getting to know his Unit when he stumbled on this video - but he did seem to feel its innate KOOL all the same. THANKS! it's really the best take it on the Subway (oops, Tube) all-in-one that I've found. Guilford?! Say hi to Eric.

what about a keyboard like this Roland DS but with built in speakers in the same price range? does that exist?

Look at the Yamaha PSR-670 or so, or whatever its successor is.

I'm a bit confused. This is called a synth, but can you manipulate the oscillators? Like, can you choose a sawtooth wave and combine it with a sine wave, and set the ADSR on it? Otherwise, it kinda just seems like a keyboard with a bunch of sounds. But anyways, this host is awesome. I will be watching any vids with him- very funny.

Besides for the present patches you can save 256 patches internally. A patch contains 4 selectable waveforms. There are 2500 waveforms to choose from. Over 20 analog emulation waveforms sine, sawtooth, triangle, pulse, square, white and pink noise from Junos, Jupiters, Prophets, Moogs, OB etc and all acoustic and electric drums, keyboards, wind etc waveforms. In the LCD menu is all parameters you would need to edit or create a patch without a computer or you can download a free editor. Each oscillator has 2 adsrs 2 lfos and a 16 step lfo, pitch etc.

@@floridahiker1503 that sounds interesting. How hard would it be to change these parameters, compared to using a normal synth's controls?
@floridahiker1503
@floridahiker1503 2 жыл бұрын
@@photonspark . It's alot more time consuming than a knob perfunction synth. The adsr is rate and levels so the decay is a rate and the sustain is a level. Because it has 2 lfo's it's better at modulation than Roland's 1 lfo synths. You'd have to download the free parameter guide and supplemental manual from Roland's website to figure it out. You'd also have to print out the waveform list because it's confusing the way they are laid out. It took me time to learn to create new patches but it was well worth it because I've been able to create complex sounds. I've been able to get nice DnB sounds experimenting with the TMT section.
