This just proves that the most influential part of the guitar is the player. A good guitarist can get the best out of anything. If I played both guitars, they would both sound just as bad as each other, and no amount of money spent on a guitar could make me sound any better. This pair could make a cigar box guitar sound like a Gibson........

"Law of Diminishing Returns" again. If they made a version of the 300 pound guitar with the ES-335 pickups and charged 450 pounds, that would probably be the sweet spot there.

I use a eq pedal to slightly cut bass and boost clarity with the epiphone 335 pro. It works wonders. I use a strat and the 335 pro with the same amp, so I just kick on the eq pedal when using the 335. It's sounds magical and almost indistinguishable for the Gibson 335 I also have.

I have a 2001 Epi dot Made in Korea. Installed new pots / wiring loom and a set of Gibson 57 classics. Sounds killer.

My suggestion would be to compare budget hollows and semi hollows - having one is a must for every guitarist out there. Let's say upper limit is 500 GBP - so we have quite a lot of Epiphones: Dot, Casino, Casino Coupe, ES339 PRO, Wildkat, but also Gretsch Streamliners, also something from Ibanez would fit into this price range.

This probably sells more epiphone guitars than Gibsons

I bought an Ibanez AS73 in sunburst years ago which compares to the Epiphone Dot, and it STUNNED me with its fit, finish, and tone. That was the Chinese guitar that made me change my mind about Chinese quality. I like the Ibanez better than my Gibson Lucille, especially if you take price into account.

My Dot is with me more than 16 years. Stock everything except the replacement stock neck pickup. I absolutely love this guitar. Won't be buying any Gibson ES-335 to replace it.

My goodness mick and Pete!! I have been following Anderton's shows for. Long while ... this is by far one of the best jams on Anderton's TV. Sounded so spontaneous ,raw and natural ... kudos! Loved every bit of it... need more of this ... so inspired to play tonight

My friend's Epi 335 is a fantastic guitar... its got binding and block inlays, also its very pretty. They certainly hold their own.

The problems with epiphone are the parts that are easily replaceable; pickups, tuners and other hardware. It makes sense they're cheap because people replace that stuff even on much more expensive guitars! I think Rob mentioned that was what they did on his guitar company too. I love the epiphone I've got and what I've owned before, great guitars with a little work!

If I went back on the road, the Epi would be my go-to guitar. Good vid !

I'm always impressed at how good ES-335 guitars sound.

I have an epiphone es-335 pro which I purchased in Andertons. Is got nicer pickups and tuners and a few bits n bobs. But man is it close to a real 335. Closer than the dot and not much more money

I played a Dot on my last record. The thing just blew my mind, I used it rather than my 1996 PRS. Through a Marshall it was amazing! The vintage 335 sounds better, but in a dense guitar wall, I am not so sure it matters.

You guys took the "vs" video format to the next level. As a owner of both Gibson and Epiphone products, its nice to Anderstons final give Epiphone some love after ALL these years. Also own a Hughes & Kettner TubeMeister 18. Very nice to see Mick using a Hughes & Kettner as well.

My bro sold me an '04 Epi Dot for $80. It plays incredibly well so I put some Gibson '57 Classics in it. Part of me still wants a 335 but this Epi will be hard to beat!

I would love to see the exact reversed version of this! The most expensive ES-335 style Epiphone like the Sheraton II Pro vs the cheapest Gibson ES-335! I've heard there's virtually no difference, apart from the fact that Gibson rub all its guitars against unicorns.

I own a Dot and absolutely love it. Got it secondhand for next to nothing and it's my go to ax.

I bought a black Dot 335 for $150 with a hard case and it sounds and play great!

The ES "335"--especially on my Sennheiser headphones--does sound more refined, but the Epi Dot is NOT BAD. You could just buy used Gibson PAFs for the Epi and be £2400 richer. You could even buy 3 or 4 Epi Dots and mod each one with different pickups and be the Ultimate Master of Tone on a Civil Servent's budget. Just gave myself a great idea!

I started my professional career on an Epiphone Sheraton in which I fitted a pair of Dimarzio humbuckers. That guitar was good enough to take anywhere and sounded as good as or better than any other guitar played by any other Blues player in my capital city. I copped a fair bit of flak from the American guitar snobs, but it was water off a duck's back to me. I knew I could play rings around them if it came to that . . and I suspect that was the real reason for their beef against me. I didn't come up in the traditional way through the pub and club scene. Well, I started off in a band that was playing pubs, clubs, and private functions . . then in Brisbane there was no work for pub bands in the late 70s due to the Disco epidemic. I threw myself into my day job, but played Blues at home to keep my skill, waiting for Disco to die out. In that time I became a Christian and soon began playing in Christian bands. When I turned pro in 1997, I was a total stranger to the new current crop of players. Nobody who'd been around in my early career was even remotely connected to the music industry. Disco had really ruined music, and musicians. I made myself enough backing tracks to do a night's work and found an agent to book me, and I was off and running. I had no idea that most club solo acts were either pretending to play the guitar while the real guitar hero was the guy on the backing tracks, or just singing into a hand held microphone, or miming the whole show, pretending to play AND sing while in most cases the original CD or a note perfect karaoke track was what the audiences heard. My agent, who also booked plenty of the mimers and pretenders, copped serious abuse from those people who really had no business even working in the music industry at all, to the extent that he dropped me from his roster, following a Christmas party in 1998 in which I was one of half a dozen acts on the bill . . AND THE ONLY ONE WHO COULD PLAY THE GUITAR OUT OF THE WHOLE BUNCH!!! I decided to book myself from then on, and also decided to go with my strength and play mainly Blues. I joined the Brisbane Blues club and went over really well with the audiences at their Blues jams, because the audiences didn't care what brand of guitar I was playing. But the snobs were LEAVING THE ROOM, rather than expose their cultured ears to Blues being played on an Epiphone Sheraton! But without even trying, I found myself being surrounded by a large group of equally disenfranchised musicians who were all very competent players. We'd have more people up dancing to us than the cool group had, and that really burned them like acid! As the unelected but unanimously accepted leader of that "rebel alliance" it was I who bore the brunt of the snobbery. "He shouldn't be popular! He's playing a *choke . . gag* EPIPHONE!" . . and to add insult to injury, I played through a MARSHALL AMP!! The whole cool group believed in the sanctity of Fender guitars and Fender amps. When other Blues jams became established in other venues, I began playing in them as well. Without the cool group to run things, it was so relaxing to just go in and soak up the atmosphere of friendship and camaraderie that existed without them. At one venue the jam session was run by John, an English guy who'd just come to Australia to live with his Australian wife, and I'd really looked after him at the Blues Club jams and made sure he got a fair go, despite the cool group wanting him to lend some high profile players his bass because they'd shown up without their instruments, so cock sure that some lesser being would lend them one! John really looked after me at his jam sessions to the point where folks would cheer when I turned up at the door! No lie! One night I showed up with Steve, a red hot drummer I'd met at an audition where we both really hit it off together, and we got up with John himself on bass and me playing a Sheraton I'd bought that morning at a pawn shop. I took it home, polished it, fitted a set of 11s to it, and set it up to play like a dream. Plugged into my Marshall Valvestate VS102R with Jim Marshall's autograph across the speaker grille, the power dimension button engaged, and my Marshall Bluesbreaker pedal out front. One of the cool group bands got up right before we did and I could tell the guitarist was busting his hump to show me up, and after him it was Steve, John, and me, just a three piece band to follow the five-piece cool group band. We did La Grange, Oh Pretty Woman by Gary Moore, and Keep Your Hands To Yourself. Then we went and sat down to drink the drinks the punters were buying for us! With just my simple setup, that Sheraton sounded amazing! It was easily the best sounding axe played on stage that night. With the gentle boost the Bluesbreaker added to the sound, I had overtones and harmonic distortion going on every time I took a solo! Singing sustain on tap as well. By 2001, the Epiphone pickups had become so good that I didn't see the need to upgrade them. I'd worn out my Sheratons with hard playing. Just the frets of course. I hardly put a scratch on them, really looked after them until they became unplayable because I'd worn the frets almost right down to the fingerboards! I switched to a pair of red Epiphone Dot models and they were great! Stock pickups in them sounded so good that I left them alone . . and played those two guitars' frets down to the wood!

Informative and entertaining comparison. Musicianship off the wall! For budget reasons, and after lots of research, I purchased an Epiphone es335 pro. The action needs to be lowered a bit, but for the first time this newbie was able to experience controlled feedback. Love the semi hollow’s tonality. Very comfortable electric for transition from acoustic playing.

I bought an Epiphone es 339 based on an old Chappers and Lee video and it's been great! I'm not surprised that the the 335 sounds and feels just as good.

I seriously LOVE hearing you two playing together. OK, so the Gibson outclasses the dot, but definitely NOT by a factor of ten..... Anyone could gig that Epiphone any day of the week. Without the Gibbo to compare it with, it would certainly cut the mustard...

Came back after a year and listened to this one again. Yes, the Gibson is killer, but the two guitars together on the jam out were stellar. One you two can jam all night as far as I'm concerned. Two, there is a synergy between those two instruments :)

I thought for a long time that a prs guitar was my dream but I found that fender telecaster or thinliners and Gibson Es 335 are dream guitars mostly because you could play rock jazz and what ever with those guitars as well with fenders Stratocaster or teles I like the beat up look and the twanging sound while Gibson has that treble and more rock grit sound to it which are two sounds I love and that’s why they are my dream guitars.

It's interesting because I'm in the market for a 335-esque guitar myself. Don't have the money for a Gibson so I've been picking up a ton of Epiphones at local stores and toying around with them. Everything from dots, to sheratons, to es-335 pros to dot studios. They all have their own feel. Gotta try them each and decide what's the right fit for you. Like Mick said, it's a piece by piece basis too. I played a dot studio at one guitar center that felt and sounded fantastic. Almost bought it. Found another at another store a few days later, didn't really cut it for me. If only Epiphone made a version of the Dave Grohl DG-335, I think I'd be sold.

Law of diminishing returns, there is a very good chance that the pricier Epiphone guitars are going to be the best bang for your buck between the Epiphone and Gibson guitars.

On YT the Epiphone Dot sounds better, the Gibson may feel better in the hands, but it's definitely not 10 times better. The Epi in the video just sounds great.

Just picked up a 2016 Epiphone Dot in Candy Apple red. For all of $300 Canadian dollars. Just plugged it in and wow! Definitely punches above its weight.

I suspect its down to what pickups are in a guitar,the Epi with a good high end pickup would give the Gibson a good competition if not match it,just my two cents

I have two DOT's, one is stock and I use it for lap style playing with a raised nut and it sounds better than my old lap steels! The other has SD Seth Lover pups and does me just fine without breaking the bank - thank you Epiphone :-)
