Isn't it strange that French composers can write such amazing music for the flute. It appears that their composition technique suits the instrument perfectly. Superb work & performance.

This concerto is made of two movempents, each of them in two parts. Jolivet loved the flute. He chosed here to accompany it only with strings. This makes an clear opposition, like air and earth. The type of melodic inspiration of Jolivet, based upon synthetic modes, is very peculiar. Th ear gets easily customed to the mode and the music flows easily, though in a non-conventional way. This concerto is an interesting masterpiece.

Imho, Andre Jolivet is a very important composer of the 20th century although he seems to be almost unknown outside of France. His music is very personal, innovative and beautiful. Try to listen, for example, to his Cello Concertos. The second one, performed by M. Rostropovitch is a fantastic masterwork!

Unfortunately he is almost unknown in France too! That's a huge injustice. Listen to this Flute Concerto: It's so touching, so moving!
