After Hours (1989) - Track 1
Joe Pass and Ray Brown team up for an outstanding set with André Previn... the performances were essentially single take jam sessions.. wonderful casual/mellow swing. 'There'll Never Be Another You' is the gorgeous set opener.
André Previn (piano), Joe Pass (guitar), Ray Brown (bass)

André Previn was probably the most complete musician that ever existed. Personally I don't know of any other who could have been at the same level playing jazz piano, arranging lounge music, writing film soundtracks and composing and conducting concert music. Very high level I mean. Previn, to put it simply, was a true genius.

This is one of the best jazz standards albums ever. With the late Ray Brown and the late Joe Pass, this is now a real collector's album. Every song in it is an absolute gem. Previn was such a master at this stuff. I don't know if he still does much of this kind of music.

The greatest musicians are those who cross the borders between the classical and jazz and excel in both countries. Superb engineering from Telarc, as usual. And who needs drums when you've got these guys?

Just LOVE the tone of Joe's guitar. Most jazz guitar tones sound so muddy.

Most people only think of Previn as a classical pianist and conductor but he started his professional career as a jazz player. Check out his early recordings...they're really great. FYI, John Williams (Star Wars, Jaws, Indiana Jones et al) also started out as a jazz pianist in NYC...same era as Previn.

Although credit is often given to Bill Evans as a "jazz pianist", Evans is actually a modern classical pianist. One listen to a recording of Andre Previn and the difference is noticed immediately. Andre Previn is one of the master pianists who happens to play jazz well.

Previn swings like Peterson. Evans more often used RUBATO, which doesn't really swing. Yet Previn used Evans' chording, at least to my ears. Previn availed himself of MANY approaches to playing piano.

Bill Evans was a jazz pianist. He was influenced by modern "classical" composers as were many other jazz pianists, from Duke Ellington to Herbie Hancock. The idiom of Evans' music had nothing whatsoever to do with so-called classical music and was firmly planted in the jazz tradition.

@@johnlindstrom9994 Rubato has nothing to do with swing or a lack thereof. Swing is about the rhythmic placement of a phrase. And Evans' music is full of long, swinging 8th and 16th-note lines, not just the luscious chording he's justly remembered for.
