Recorded in 1991 when András Schiff was about 38. Even then, so young, he was one of the world’s great musicians and pianists. Fills one with awe - the dedication, practice, study, determination, and his empathic interpretations of Schumann. Thank you for this jewel.

2020 now, and I have listened to the Études played by András Schiff 20 times or more; also to performances by other great pianists. Have to say, though, that it is Schiff’s performance I truly love above all others. For me, his playing, his music-making, are deeply moving in addition to the intelligence with which he performs. Thank you.

I will say something more later. I am just overcome by this performance. I love Schumann's works and love how Mr Schiff understands them totally. Immaculate i performance in every possible way.

48:31 Purely magical. The melodic line, the second voice in tandem, the buildup, the climax and then the pleading 2nd voice. My God😢😢😢

A very clean performance. Interesting how Schiff chooses to end the Etudes with a quiet variation.

Caleb Hu : The final Étude that he played, was that perhaps the Posthumous Étude Wo0 6, No. 4? Am unsure, but feel it is a fine ending.

I think Schiff emanates soft and quietness in his playing. Whenever I think of him, it's the first thing that comes to mind: touch and sensitivity.

25:27 I need more contrast from Schiff here. I feel like he understands Schumann deeply. But knowing his style, this is as much violent as he could muster. It has to be much more unsettling. But the whole Etude Symphoniques were SUBLIME.

Schumann wrote this in 4 days I think and IMO is one of the greatest pieces for solo piano ever written. Definitely one of the most creative. Anyways, out of the 8 fantasies I think we can pick an artist we find plays each the best. I do...is that allowed?

Superb interpretarion, far better than his more recent ones( I heard one which is abnormally slow!). Besides, he avoids inserting the five posthumous variations after Etude VI, a very reasonable decision...

I much prefer the young Schiff. He was fascinating. He has become so meticulous and pécieux that he has kind of lost his spirit and soul. My two cents

@@PhedraBcn : That may have been the case for a little while, but listening to him now in 2022, his spirit has returned to fill him. Audible in everything he plays, but it is a more mature spirit and - I believe - deeper and wiser. I love listening to him, probably more than I do to any other pianist - apart from Elisabeth Leonskaja who is my heroine.

ThegreatSchiff : I agree. The more I watch and listen to András Schiff, the more I think he makes music with his entire being, his soul. Nothing is kept in reserve. Heard him asked, “Sir Andrâs, what is music to you?” He stopped walking, looked surprised, and then said, “Everything! It’s communication; it’s love. Yes, love.” That about sums him up!
