Thank you so much for upping these. This is my second listening of this series. They are simply enlightening. LECTURE NOTES: 1. only 15 out of the 32 Beethoven Sonatas have manuscripts. 2. "Beethoven goes to heaven. Mozart comes from heaven." ---------------1st movt: sonata------------- 3. this sonata is in F minor, a very usual key with 4 flats, which shows Beethoven's ambition as a young composer. whereas Mozart didn't write any sonatas in any key as remote. it's a la breve: you are courting 2. 4.@12:52 Funniest assessment of Schoenberg😉 5. starts with an upbeat. 6. first theme of the first movement is an ascending Mannheim rocket, second is a descending one. 7. third/closing(descending & then ascending I noticed, perhaps as a way to comment on the previous two? playing out the conflict?) theme of the first movement is marked "expressivo". When Beethoven writes that, he wants the music a tiny bit slower. 8.@20:56 tuba-like offbeats~ 9.@21:06 Fortissimo. Mozart's dynamics stop at Forte. 10.@23:27 the preparation of the return: a crushing dissonance, "like a little knife in the back". Never fails to make me smile. Maestro really as a thing with imprinting vivid musical images on one's mind. And it doesn't go away. Can't wait for "the tamed beast" part he did for Op.7. Another little memorable Schiff gem. 11. continues with the preparation: the tails of the motif. 12. a little orchestra: clarinet & flute. 13. ends with Sforzandi in fortissimo. -----------2nd movt: ternary form (or sonata form without development)------------------- 14. second movt in F major. Quite strange that all four movements are in the tonality of F. Same as the "Pastoral" sonata, Op.28, or the string quartet Op.59, No.2. 15. in Adagio. Shows the Haydnian connection because Hayden has many slow movements marked Adagio. Whereas Mozart almost never. The latter prefers andante, Andante Con Moto, and Adantino. 16. starts with an upbeat. 17. full of feminine cadences: The meaning of FEMININE CADENCE is a musical cadence in which the final chord or melody note falls on a weak beat. -------3rd movt: minuet & trio-------------- 18. starts with an upbeat. 19. @30:44 four-part harmonies: possibly string quartet sonorities. 20. trio in 2-part counterpoint. 21. @33:17, chords of 6th. One of Beethoven's favorite devices, can't be heard in the 1st concerto. ---------4th movt: modified sonata-allegro movement, in which the development section has been replaced with a contrasting middle section (a riding piece)----------- 22. @37:07 inspired by teacher Haydn. Calling back to the 1st movement. 23. developement with new material. The phrase length , symmetry vs. asymmetry. Very 'Haydnesk'. Something Haydn invented. 24. Plunges straight to hell. Ends brutally with no release.

His lecture recitals are just magnificient . It would be a long list of positive remarks on this master of piano , his deep knowledge of the musical literature , and also , his often very humorous remarks. One can learn such a lot from him ,especially if one tries to improve one's own playing.
