Sensei Bertel has really trained very hard under excellent teachers and attained a wonderful level of waza along with understanding of true Japanese karatedo.

Todos os seus seminários ele passa isso... Seria isso como forma de defesa pessoal ou competição?

It's looks like a good training course. I'm impressed by both the points and suggestions that he is making about how better to do something, and the way the trainees are adopting them. Motivating stuff.

Well as they say, 'knowledge is power'.

Plenty of 'thoughts'. And more questions than answers. I'm assuming you are being serious with your question. So here goes. Applications, IMHO, can be thought of in several ways. One is that you want an application that helps makes sense of the form of the kata. This way when you practice, the kata has meaning and life. Rather than just looks nice. Having said that, correct form is always important. Another is to delve deeper and study with knowledgeable researchers, and there are a few around the place. For me Patrick McCarthy Sensei makes the most sense with good workable bunkai, oyo, henka waza or what ever else you like to call them. We also need to appreciate that the kata of today is almost certainly not the original. Therefore do you want to have original applications or something that makes sense of the 2017 version of the kata? So it depends on how involved you want to get with Bassai Dai. For me sometimes I worry about applications and other times I think 'oh who cares? These applications are more dangerous to me than any enemy' and I just work on posture, style, flexibility and enjoy the work out. I suggest you look up McCarthy Sensei [old school karate], and also Iian Abernathy [or a similar name], who's applications are nice and simple and certainly work. His applications also make sense, which is more than can be said for many applications. Enjoy your research.

You make some interesting points and observations. I don't know that particular Sochin bunkai that you refer to. However there's appears to be no shortage of complete none sense on KZfaq, and I ask myself 'why did these people want to put this on KZfaq'? Ego is the best answer I can come up with. I recall watching a training session in Tokyo. I think the people were KWF people and it involved a very old Japanese gentleman who explained that what we now call Gedan Barai was once called xyz, and it was intended as a gedan strike. This caught my attention immediately as I've long considered 'gedan barai' to be one of the worst defenses against a maegeri ever. I feel likewise about age uke, which to me is a natural reflex action against a downward strike. But that's another conversation. The 'secret pact' thing may or may not be true. What is true is that many karate teachers have bennefitted from claiming to have solved the puzzle.

Thank you very for kind your words but I just commented about the music because it doesn't add or give support to the quality of excellent instruction by Sensei Bertel.I don't think it was an insult to any one. But if it has offended your feelings them I am sorry. It was unintentional.

Très intéressant ; mais ce bruit de fond exaspérant empêche de se concentrer et de bien baigner dans l'ambiance. On a envie de donner un grand Mae geri dans cette machine à bruit pour la détruire.

Fantastic skills on sensei Bertel, but i'm always concerned for the safety of the uke in these videos...i mean, training projections without mats (2:30)...Sure Karate is not ballet, but damaging your body is not the point either.
@AzriAzhari4 жыл бұрын
For 2:30 I would have thought the black belts have learned how to "fall" with minimum damage, making sure the back of the head doesn't touch the ground. In this example I think that the instructor should have taught them how to "fall". In real life situations, you won't be able to set up mats. I understand your point of safety, and safety first, yes but to be safe in a bigger picture one has to be in a dangerous spot first. Watch Okinawan Karate. They damage their body to take less damage later.

1:01 do that in real combat please.... I don't question his skills but that move was simply ridiculous and suicidal in a real situation

In real combat this would be a 'last chance to survive' thing. You will not go so close to the enemy voluntarily.

@@justinstuart8382 are you referring to Sensei Hotton? The guy who’s 62 and still moves faster and more fluid than a 30 year old with as much range of motion as a 25 year old? The nerve of these guys trying to enjoy the movement of their bodies for as long as possible, hey?

I do agree and the way the red belt was treated was not acceptable..
@aalb19704 жыл бұрын
Why? I don't think he was disrespectful. On the contrary. A good karate-ka needs to know how it feels to get hit. This requires some level of contact so you learn how to absorb a blow or a kick and counter-attack.
@TheRogueSquid2 жыл бұрын
I’m sure the red belt loved it I know I prefer to feel the power of a technique to know what it feels like to get hit by it, so I could prepare for one.
