It is not by Andre Rieu. André Rieu is a conductor of his own orchestra. The bolero itself is by Maurice Ravel.

He will be performing at the Capital One Area 9/16/23 in Washington, DC/Maryland. He is one heck of a violinist and conductor, if anyone is in the area and there are tickets available.

I think for many people of a certain age in U.K. Bolero was popularised by Torville and Dean who won the Ice Dancing Chapionships to this piece

A lot of people call Rieu the "clown prince" of classical music because of his concert presentations often mixing contemporary and classical music but he brings classics to the masses in a pleasant and accessible way with humour and charisma. Anyone who can open doors to music they may not be familiar with is doing us a favour. His concerts are wonderful and often done in beautiful settings like Vienna and Venice. People don't appreciate classical music as I feel they should, especially in the Americas. Used to love "The Proms" on the BBC.

People made fun of Liberace too once. He famously quipped that all these nasty comments made him cry. All the way to the bank 😂!

@@Spo-Dee-O-DeeHe’s been playing violin since he was five. His strict father was an orchestra conductor who only allowed classical music to be played in their home. Andre has a music degree from a conservatory in Brussels. He was a violinist in the Limburg Symphony Orchestra before going out on his own with a salon orchestra of five who played for parties and retirement homes, mostly the music of Johann Strauss. He built that into what you see here. Yes, pops but classical and operatic music as well. His first big recording breakthrough was an arrangement of a waltz melody from a Shostakovich piece, which he called The Second Waltz. His is quite a story, that includes a classical music education. Doesn’t hurt that he’s also a Showman and a savvy businessman. 😉

Torvill and Dean won their gold medal at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo performing their routine to Maurice Ravel's Bolero, and scored twelve perfect 6.0s and six 5.9s from the judges, as well as a clean sweep of 6.0s for artistic impression. It is a legendary performance that gives you chills. Check it out. It's here on KZfaq.

Равель написал много музыки, но "Болеро", наверное, самое известное произведение. Вообще мне странно, что много людей не знает этого произведения. Чему вообще в школах учат? 🤷‍♀️

Maybe funny to know, but this piece was ordered by one of the greatest ballerina's for a new ballet performance. Ravel himself found it garbage. Little did he know that it became one of the most recognisable music pieces, used in many films as well. The ballet itself is and was performed by many great ballet dancers. I guess everyone got his/her favourite. My favourite, and I'm not into ballet at all, is Sylvie Guillem. She performed the bolero in 2015 when she was fifty (50!!!) years young in Japan om new years eve. The last note was played right on the stroke of midnight. As I said, I am not into ballet at all, but this performance most definitely has the "WOW"-factor. Check it out... It gives you an entire new dimension about the bolero. Nice reaction... Even while it was on the short version.. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🌷

The Second Waltz (used in the film Eyes Wide Shut) is a breathtakingly beautiful piece. I watched it performed by Rieu at an open air concert with dancers. (Vienna?)

J.K - Just for clarity Bolero was written and composed by Maurice Ravel and it is truly a classic. This song has been in my Top Ten Go-To romantic pieces. Great choice, JK. Ahhhh, I miss Bo Derek and her use of this song, but Torvill and Dean's Olympic Gold Medal and that is all I say about it's playing time at the moment. Harri, Your review was excellent as well.

there's an Italian animation movie (hand drawn) from i guess the 70's and that's one of the songs depicted, i think it starts with life appearing on Earth, evolution, megacities, i forgot how it ends. My favorite is the animation for La Valse Triste - the movie title is euh, just kidding it's not "euh" it's kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hZllp8mnvNXUcac.html

When Maurice Ravel's (1875-1937) Bolero was first played in 1928 the audience didn't appreciate it because of its repetitive structure. Today, it's one of the most frequently performed orchestral works. However, André Rieu has a talent for making good music cheesy. This performance is awful, pure kitsch. There are plenty of good versions of the Bolero on KZfaq.

Hard to imagine how a 120-piece orchestra playing in perfect rhythmic synch can be considered cheesy, but I guess it depends on how you prefer your milk to be processed.

@herzwolf1724, Actually you are wrong. Ravel himself found it the biggest fail he written. And to say that a large orchestra like this failed tells us more about your dislike for music and harmonies. Btw, this piece was written as ordered. Google it... It might tell you a bit more about a historical immensely popular classic performance.

@@fredschepers5149 I was talking about the performance, not the piece itself. As I said, there are excellent versions by GOOD LARGE orchestras, too.

Not sure what you mean. This piece is written for a large orchestra, and the order of appearance of each music instrument in this video is exactly as Ravel wrote it. So can you please explain what the "kitsch" bit is in it?
